How is he a free agent while contracted? You can’t tear up a contracted. Massive loop hole if that happens.

SEN stated like 30 minutes before Barrett reported this that GC apparently have been trying all year (so they knew he was gone) and the AFL has completely rejected it today saying it won’t happen.

Barrett must’ve missed that news while he was jerking off to himself all day before going onto the footy show.

Won't happen.

Barrett tossing it up to get ratings.
Why not. AFL get to orchestrate the result they want. Probably fed the info to Barrett. Will then close the ‘loophole’ after the May deal is done.

Would be a great result for Suns and either Pies or Hawks if they get him.

Until he wants out at the end of 2019 as well????
Nothing is avoided under that scenario.

So you would keep a player who doesn't wish to commit to you beyond hews current term-especially after your last 2 captains have walked out after a long year circus?
Is this not creating an environment that is detrimental to a club?

His worth on the market is a first rounder.
Lets not kid ourselves into thinking he is Alex Rance or Buddy Franklin for talent.
Swallow has said he loves the GC and is looking to extend his contract. He's in for the long term.

Every single player that has a contract and eligible for FA could also do the same. Won’t happen.

There is precident of this happening with Jared Brennan and I think Nick Dal Santo (I could be wrong on that one) if both parties agree. Though precident doesn’t generally come into play with the AFL. They usually make it up as they go depending on what outcome they want.

Given the reliability (or lack there of) of Barrett and SEN it’s entirely possible both are wrong.

Not enough. They need to beat the expected top 5 compensation pick if they keep him for another year.

That's not necessarily true.

There's a balance to every list decision, yes a potential top 5 pick next year but you also keep a player on your list for 12 months, strip captaincy AGAIN and pay his inflated salary. The culture is damaged enough as it already is up there without keeping a disgruntled former captain on your list for a further year.

Hypothetically speaking, if Sydney did give up Pick 13 for Moore.

Pick 13 and 16 would be more than enough. (14 and 17 after Lynch compo)
It's actually overs for a 27 year old defender who has never made the AA squad.

If you wanted to look at something as basic as a points sytem. (not really relevant if you're not bidding on players)

Pick 3 - 2234 points
Picks 14 & 17 - 2186 points

But they are valued very similar.

Gold Coast would hold picks 2, 3, 14, 17, 18, 26, 29, 38, 41

Would be a huge rebuild year for them in a good draft, hopefully get some mates together who enjoy each others company and start forming some synergy amongst the playing group.

Lukosius, Rankine then maybe Rozee, Collier-Dawkins and Curtis Taylor.
I'd be trying to get all 3 South Australian boys together.

If they could snag 5 players like that in the top 20, their list rebuild is already on its way.

If Moore goes to the Swans for pick 13 Pies can use that add their late first and then ask for a pick back. Say 29.

Pies have an academy kid that will likely get bid on so they will lose their first anyway so trading it out won't matter.

Pies know they are contending next year just need to sore up that defense. They get May, land Quaynor for the future bidding and using a later 2nd and off they go.

I think the articles about Brennan being precedence are wrong. There are multiple articles that state Brennan was out of contract at the end of 2010 when he signed for Gold Coast.

Carlton and the Suns are circling for the uncontracted Brennan, who has announced his desire to be traded, while Sherman, who has a year remaining on his contract, has been linked to the Western Bulldogs and Richmond.

ABC, 10/09/10
Their football department is under review by a contracted third party and important swingman Jared Brennan remains out of contract and possibly headed elsewhere because of a salary cap squeeze.

Herald Sun, 07/11/07
No wonder Brennan resembled the excited kid who first ran out for Brisbane four years ago when he arrived at Lions pre-season training this week after signing a new three-year deal.

The Age, 08/10/10
Separately, the Suns also signed Brennan, who became their eighth and final uncontracted signing after the Lions agreed to release him from the last month of his contract, enabling him to go straight to the new club.

The only thing relevant to the May discussion is whether they can get a better return this year than they would get via FA compo next year. If a club wants to trade for him now, they will need to provide GC with an offer that trumps any compo that they would likely receive next offseason. It really is that simple

You are correct. The issue with Brennan at the time was that Gold Coast were only able to sign one out of contract player from each club as per the expansion rules. Michael Rischitelli had already been signed from Brisbane, so the Suns shouldn’t have been able to raid Brisbane again for Brennan, but it seems everyone was happy to facilitate this move, so it ended up getting done.

The Dal Santo issue was a contract trigger clause by way of games played, that gave Dal Santo and St Kilda the option of an additional 12 month extension from meeting the games played requirement. The option was declined, meaning Dal Santo was out of contract and therefore a free agent.

Damian Barrett? Credibility?

Because the Suns aren't the only team in the AFL. May is contracted, it is up to the Suns to drive a hard bargain not just suck up to the AFL and say "Look we don't know how to broker a good trade (See Lachie Weller). Can we just do this cool little loophole to get pick 5 and be done with it."

Also, think about how much this disadvantages the other teams such as Brisbane, St Kilda and Freo who all has average seasons as well.

Could impact any deal for Lachie Neale as well.
