Swans in Sydney v Storm in Melbourne.

I see the Swans position in the AFL about the same as the Storm in The NRL. But the AFL is way more dominant in this country and therefore going back to the question posed by the OP, the Swans have had a greater impact in their city than the Storm
Way more dominant?
Nah.

I think recent TV rights deals were very similar.

15 million folk in NSW and Qld might just disagree with you.

Melbourne have had a lot more success than the Swans though. There has barely been a season where they haven't been either favourites or near favourites for the premiership.
Swans aren't to far behind. Always competitive.

Which the AFL loves and encourages. The NRL wouldn't give a s**t if the Storm spent 20 years at the bottom.

Yeah agree. That is probably because of the venue and even the colours.

A female Sydney sider can head out in the red and white and head to the SCG for a few proseccos.

Dunno if that really is the same at Aami Park... Which is basically just a sports ground only and lacks that social night out.

The colours cannot be underestimated here.

mates of mine who go to the rugby would choose the rugby over any game played at the G at the same time unless it was their team playing at the G (and even then, they may choose rugby)

The mates were always AFL but got interested in rugby league due to storm being introduced in the 90's

I reckon they are a pretty diehard supporter base the storm and most would choose rugby over AFL if played at the same time over the road from each other.

Are there many Storm fans outside of Vic? Storm have a pretty decent level of support in Vic I would've thought. Always see lots of purple around when they're playing at home. Swans have a bit of a leg up starting as a relocated team maybe?

1999, I used to love trying to get across the old footbridge to the Olympic park car park, footy fans going one way and league the other (absurd when you think about it now). Asking who won, how everyone went etc. Was always a friendly vibe.
a valid point. i feel majority of afl fans deep down barrack for the storm and respect the club. if the storm lose, they dont lose sleep, but wish good things upon the nrl team.

The Swans are way more popular - their average crowd in Sydney are about double the highest Sydney based NRL club, whereas in complete contrast, Storm average even less than North Melbourne. Similar story in memberships - the Swans exceed any Sydney NRL club, whereas Storm have less than all Melbourne based AFL clubs, even North Melbourne. The Swans also raise far more revenue through memberships - their supporter base is mostly drawn from the wealthy inner, eastern and North shore suburbs, whereas Storm mostly draw from some low income, less educated outer suburban areas, particularly with Polynesian and/or NZ backgrounds.

Also, the latest AFL TV rights blow the NRL rights out of the water - about $150 million per year difference.

However, what makes the Storm (with it’s chief sooner still Crown Casino) really dodgy is its majority owner, Matt Tripp. I’m surprised this situation is allowed, and hasn’t been given more publicity, though with Fairfax now being owned by NRL rights holder ch9 and News Ltd being …. News Ltd, with a vested interested here, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. -
This scam is also a great way around the salary cap restrictions.

Im both a Storm and Lions member.

Given I'm a Lions viv based member and we get 6 games in Melbourne if we're lucky I'll always chose the Lions if there was a clash.

If I followed a Vic based team it would probably depend on who they are playing if there was a clash.

I agree about the Swans fans but don't reckon you are accurate re Storm fans.

Yes maybe in the early days there was a heavy Polynesian presence but whilst they are still there def the minority

A simple way to compare is this…
Swans get bigger crowds and have bigger memberships than than all nine Sydney NRL clubs.
Stone get smaller crowds and have a smaller membership than all nine Melbourne AFL clubs.
Swans would two to three time bigger than Storm.

But isn't that more of a comparison between AFL and NRL.

Storm have the biggest membership in the NRL. Swana not top in AFL

No. The whole point is comparing how big the Storm are in Melbourne (11th biggest football club) compared to how big the Swans are in Sydney (arguably the biggest football club, certainly right up there).

going off names in Storm's under 19 (it's not under 18) team here, participation at elite age group level is very much polynesian

Wouldn't dispute that but that's the players not the fans

But it counts the Swabs significant Victorian membership
