Not quite right - The ONLY reason it took Burns until the third year from when he was drafted was that he decided to stay with his SANFL club, Norwood, for an extra 2 years after we drafted him - out of a sense of loyalty to his club (and the SANFL was a lot stronger back then). FTR - He was a star with Norwood in those 2 years, and took no time to find his niche with Collingwood once he arrived. The only thing that held him back were persistant injuries for awhile.

My point is however it still took him 3 years to mature as a footballer to play in a particular role. We can't write off these kids they need to have a go and be able to mature as footballers. Midfield is a crutial position and whether we like it or not some of our older players will be gone sooner than later. All this swapping and changing isn't helping anyone. Also it is much harder now to break into Collingwoods side now than it did previously.
 
My thoughts on the game:

MacAffer was okay but surprised to see him BOG.

Cox didn't impress me much. He still got chopped up as a defender IMHO. Got reported in the 1st quarter, but it was on the far wing for me.

Anthony was very good. His kicking is excellent and his decision making was great. Hit targets, had an impact, and is ready for AFL whenever the opportunity arises.

Casey-Leigh moves very nicely and has a more than decent kick. I understand the question marks over his KP prospects, but he's a very interesting project.

Wellingham worked into the game the more it went on. Doesn't appear to have the body strength to break tackles, but got in the right spots and used it well. Has definitely improved his running to space to provide an option, which is what he needed to do.

Iles was great early but faded in the second half. Maybe struggled after a week out of the game last week? Kicking was average but his running was great and he is quick.

Toovey had one good passage of play where he ran, handed off, kept running to receive and then passed off again. It didn't amount to anything but he tried hard. Overall a pretty uneventful game for Tooves.

McCarthy can play. There was a point where a Dolphins player was running down the far wing and had a 20m head start, and a Pies player went hell for leather after him and nearly got him. I didn't know it was McCarthy until afterward, but he is quick. He is a nice flat kick, and his decision making was very good. Looks a little ungainly but is not unco-ordinated at all.

Bryan had a very good game. Did well in the ruck, presented a target up forward, laid tackles... definitely deserved to be in the best.

Cook had some nice clearances from stoppages, but they were the kind where you throw the boot on it and hope. More often than not, they went to an opponent. His sweeping work across half-back was valuable, but it was just a mediocre day for Cook IMHO.

Thoolen didn't do a whole lot that I noticed, I'm afraid.

Dawes presented well and kicked a couple. He wasn't helped by some of the delivery, but he's still a way off seniors from what I can see. Yet to really impose himself on the game.

Stanners didn't play. Maybe rested after copping a knock in seniors last week.
 
Also Dyas did some nice things, I don't think I'd have had him in my best, but he showed quite a bit. He's quick, he's not afraid to throw himself in there, and he runs hard and long. Hands are clean, just struggling with the decision-making a little right now which is understandable.

Chris Egan didn't do too much of note from my position.
 
Just got back from Frankston, bloody hell, if we get any more injuries we are buggered. Not one of the players at VFL level could make an impact if they were picked next week.

Having said that, Dawes is developing nicely, Anthony will be a regular next year and on my 1st impressions of McCarthy, we have found a bewty there, fast, skillful and a good size.

No doubts with the ins and outs next week, Maxwell for Reid, and if burns is fit Brodie Holland can have a few more runs for in the two's. If burns isnt fit no need to make changes for changes sake, one change will do.

Why does everyone forget Dyas?? He was in the best!

Also wouldn't mind hearing about Jurrah. Still young (and early in the year), but has been amongst the goals each week. Potential rookie listing next year?

Can anybody give an update on how Tim Walsh is playing this year for the Pies?

I would mind betting the Pies would be looking at placing him on the rookie list next year, bearing in mind he was a N0 4 draft pick a couple of years ago, when he was at the Dogs he just couldnt get on the oval because of injuries. He was at the Dogs for about 4 /5 years and played one senior game.
 
mcCarthy to debut on anzac day, would that be a big call ?

im keen to see some new talent in the mids, johnson and obree seem to be doing same thing each week, kicking to opposition players or just laying it on the boot and waiting to see where it lands.

i know obree gets clearances etc, but there cant be room for both him and johnson, they turn it over far too often
 
Cheers for the report Sampler. Good to hear McCarthy showed some pace, and it doesn't sound like Wellingham did his chances of selection any harm.

Burns came to us essentially as a 20 yr old mature kid, straight up ready made back pocket who debuted immediatley in season 95 but did not get a tast of midfield action till 97, by 98-99 he was Bux's deputy under the pitiful Shaw regime....save for Buckley, Burns would have been captain by his 5th season post G Brown...all telling signs that he was well and truly a mature selection in every way.

My point he did not need 3 years to mature...

Shannon Cox was reported on a Level 4(Highest level) rough conduct during the 1st quarter after he deliberately pushed Alex Lee into the fence on the wing.

Dolphin Alex Lee may have sustained a season ending knee injury over the incidient.

A Level 4 charge if found guilty can carry a 4 to 8 week suspension.
