Mainly here so we can enjoy the LOLs afterwards at the end of 2023, but also an interesting discussion point.

I’m in genuine two minds and can’t call it, but who do you see finishing higher in 2023?

Who is positioned better from a list/team perspective?

Let the games begin…

Yep, Pies started slowly and copped a bunch of strong teams.

If only we were give a soft start like some other clubs.
I thought you guys were going to have another dominant season this year? 4-6 goals behind 3 expected top 8 teams isn't a great sign of whats to come.

Didn't really look close in any of those games and if the Lions didn't have Hipwood last night u probably lose that too

Why would the AFL give the reigning premiers a leg up though? We’re already ahead of the pack, the AFL needs to promote equalisation

Sides who haven’t made grand finals for 25 years should have it easier, logically

Most sound Carlton supporter logic.

“If Brisbane DIDN’T have their 40 goal forward playing, they somehow would won”

I would have genuinely swapped Fagan on for Hipwood at HT

What better way for them to ensure the supporters of the lesser clubs maintain interest for as long as possible throughout the season?

Quite brilliant by the AFL.

He was awful - kept making costly mistakes that stopped certain Brisbane scores and led to Collingwood goals on the other end. Genuinely had an absolute mare of a game

Carlton had a tougher draw last year and played 4 of the the top 8 finalists twice , those being Collingwood, Melbourne, gws, and St kilda.
Wouldn't have have called it a softer draw at all.

Pies were 4-5 after R9 in 2022 and still made top4. Dropping a couple of tough games early aint the end of the world.

Lol, it was the Baggers who were lucky to win against the Lions and were talking it up as a strong win!

AFL tried their best with the fixture for Carlton, given GWS were predicted to be bottom 4 and St. Kilda bottom 6.

Hence my earlier comment about assessment of fixture difficulty...

Carlton under manned v lions so in context an excellent win

That’s fair enough. Carlton had to play the premiers twice, whereas Collingwood didn’t play them at all

We finished 9th in 2022 - did you expect our fixture to be the same as yours who lost in a Prelim...?

On the other hand, he was defended really well and now allowed any gimme marks all night. Every opportunity was a 50/50, which he didn’t complete. Collingwood’s defence was on song all night

Spot on.

Assessing fixture difficulty at the beginning of the year, based on the previous season's finishing positions, is a waste of time.

Assessing fixture difficulty at the end of the season based on that season's finishing positions is a little better.

But to truly and accurately assess fixture difficulty, you have to assess the form and line-up of the opposition on a week to week basis.
That while correct would be both highly complex and subjective and hence of little value for objective judgment

Mate he was dropping uncontested marks - he was a straight liability last night. Could have been defended by Stevie Wonder and he would have had no impact. Contrastingly, Frampton did a great job on Daniher. That I will give credit for.
