Will the Tim Kelly trade go down as one of the worst ever ?

Reckon there is a bit of sh*t on the liver towards Kelly down eagles way.
Entitled and pampered.
He's been one of their best players and it's guys like Hurn/Naitanui/Darling, Who have better contracts who have been their issue. Stop talking out of your ass

To quote Weaver from years ago...

Worst trade ever?

That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 for Stephen O'Reilly who played 12 games for you. AND you had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle on you. AND you had to pay a fine. AND you got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that your mulit-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

I reckon that would have the McMahon trade covered by a couple of laps of Flemington, then a trip down the highway for a run round Caulfield, before a backtrack to run the length of the Moone Valley straight.

The trade never made any sense since Kelly told everyone that he wouldn't play for anyone but West Coast. That he would sit the year out if he goes anywhere but West Coast.

Basically his trade value to Geelong was zilch because he was only going to West Coast. Geelong were going to have to take whatever West Coast threw their way.

Yet West Coast basically mortgaged their future for him.

Makes no sense. West Coast just had to act a little disinterested and draw the process out. If memory serves correct that made a deal early in the trade period. They just had to make Geelong sweat for another week. Really bizarre. West Coast will rue this.

It was a lot to give up for a third year player that rode the coattails of Dangerfield and Selwood.

Michael Barlow came from the VFL and there was talk about him winning the Brownlow midway through his first season before breaking his leg.

Look at Podsiadly when he came into the league. Came into the league and was second best goalkicker for Geelong 2010, best goalkicker in their premiership year 2011.

These players that came up through state leagues seem to hit the ground in the AFL but have a short shelf life. I really don't see Tim Kelly evolving his game and taking it to another level. This is probably the best he'll ever be.

And you have to question the mental side of his game. He really struggled in Geelong being away from home. Most men would just be rapt to be playing AFL -- even more so for a quality side. But he seemed to complain a lot from day one which is not a good sign.

They tried drawing it out the year before and it most likely cost them a shot at a GF

Yep, 5 matches into a drastically disrupted season is the right time to make this call.

You can’t question his mental side. Kelly has three kids, two with autism and he is far away from his support network. He just wants to get home. On top of this, the media and portions of Geelong Fans are questioning his integrity and bagging him out. There would also be internal GFC staff in his ear at this time.

With all these pressures he then produces an amazing season and is AA.

Due to the Mental strength of Kelly, Geelong receive great service and great draft picks.

Dangerfield, Selwood, Duncan, Guthrie - not flakey

Shuey, Yeo, Gaff, Sheed - flakey

Not buying that.

I wouldn't put Kelly's slowish start down to being around a 'flakey' midfield. Eagles aren't the best contested ball side but neither were Geelong in 2018 (pretty sure they won the most in 2019 though) and Kelly was still a gun that year.

There's a lot of s**t in here about riding the coattails of Selwood and Dangerfield.

Sure Danger was a gun still, but Selwood was out of the center in 2019 and played his statistically (for a midfielder) worse season since his debut season.

Kelly didn't "ride his coattails", he just simply forced his way into the starting center bounce. He and Danger were the only Geelong mids who were a steady attendee in the midfield, the 3rd was switched.

Also what a ridiculous criticism to say "this is the best he will ever be" (based on the experiences of a 28 yo key forward and a midfielder with a horrid leg break I.e. s**t house evidence).

5th in a Brownlow, 2nd in B&F (2 years running), All-Australian, 4th in the AFLCA.

I'd say if he's peaked it's a damn good peak. And I don't think he has just because Barlow broke leg and Podsiadly who was half a dozen years older than him had a short lived career :drunk::drunk:

Geelong got a good haul for a guy who was 100% going so credit to them but they'd still rather him right now with Dangerfield, Ablett, Selwood and Hawkins also around.

Two issues/Questions.

Do you think you can play good football when your head isn't in it because you're exhausted?

Do you think three toddlers in a new environment away from home, especially special needs children, is going to lead to restful sleep?

He needs to be with his children but he will also pay a price for it.

Once they are home I expect him to surge.

So move them all to the Gold Coast right? Would that now be further away? Him and his missus manipulating things to get their own way. Using the kids as an excuse.

You understand they will only be away from Perth for 4-6 weeks? Not years at a time. Try use a bit more logic next time

At the moment, it is clearly the worst draft deal ever. But with time who knows? Judd deal didn't look good for them early on but turned out fine.
Nothing comes close to the below...
In the 1994 offseason period, the right to recruit McLeod was traded by Fremantle Football Club to the Adelaide Crows in return for their promising forward Chris Groom in what many now consider to be one of the most lopsided trades in Australian rules football history.

No criticism at all for that trade. Turned out great for West Perth.

Sometimes you see a player doing really well at one club because they are playing a role that is right up their alley. Then they take the money and go to another club and the environment doesn't suit them. Classic example was Warwick Capper. Played on the tiny SCG ground where he could take marks from long bombs and kick for goal no further than 30 metres out from easy range. He then takes the money and heads up to Carrara where he had to roam far and wide for his kicks and often was too far out to score.

I've been thinking this too - most likely because have 2 toddlers haha
