PRACTICE MATCH RESULTS:

In the most recent practice match Carlton ran out with 22 players and we ran out with 27 players. Obviously both sides played around with positions etc, but if the size of these teams is any indication Carlton's 22 looks more fixed. Siekman: "We're on top of the world because... we've got 27 players to pick from. I don't think there are too many other clubs who could say that."

Time will tell if that's a good thing or a bad thing in terms of talent and depth. Do we have a more even, but less talented side overall or do we simply have a heap of talented players. I hope it's the latter.

While I'm not sure on where Melbourne sits it is worth noting that Siekman rates the bulldogs as "one of the toughest to beat this year" and the bookies have them equal flag favourites.

Thanks for this barrackers.

I will move the thread to the main page of the board, as we did with the game day thread for the practice match last week, and following the game, will relocate it back to the women's footy sub-forum.

As we do with the senior men's games, we could have three women's game-related threads each week - preview, game day, post-game review - all start up on the main page, and following closure, relocate them to the women's sub-forum.

Not much pressure on the women.

First up, a game against the old enemy. And we've given them a free kick in the goal square by coughing up our home ground advantage. Nothing like starting from behind. Character building.

A few rules etc confirmed:
  • No interchange cap
  • 15-minute quarters (with time-on added only after goals or extended breaks in play)
  • Quarter lengths expected to run for 17-20 minutes
  • 16-minute half-time break
  • 8-minute breaks at quarter and three-quarter time
  • heat policy - extended breaks (BOM forecast - wet bulb above 28)

I wouldn't worry about home ground advantage. Our women haven't won at Princes Park for nearly 84 years

A girls football match between teams representing Carlton and Richmond aroused much interest. Carlton, which had apparently had much practice with its coach, M. Crisp, knew more of the game and marked and kicked better than Richmond. Their marking was remarkably good. Probably in fun one Carlton girl slapped an opponent’s face when she was held. One girl lay on the ground after a solid bump for more than a minute, and another hobbled about after receiving a knock on the ankle. Carlton, which kept the play constantly in front of Richmond’s goal, led by 1-0 at half-time, and by 1-4 to nil. The goalkicker was Miss Parbour, and the best players were – Carlton – Misses Kelly, Bullock, McLaughlin, Barry and Lane. Richmond – Misses Willis, Stronach, Campbell, Nott and Bruce.

PS it's great playing you guys in the very first AFL game. Hope we get a great crowd at this historic game.

Another pre-game article in The Age. The media are getting behind the AFLW season in a big way, which is terrific:

'The historic first AFL women's league match will feature a countdown with Carlton and Collingwood footballers running through handpicked guards of honour before play starts.'

And:

'In the lead-up to the AFLW kick-off the AFL has been inundated with questions from the new audience, such as fielding inquiries about the availability of gluten free food and baby change facilities at AFLW match venues.'

The latter is really exciting in that it flags the arrival of a new and diverse audience for footy. The difference of the crowd was something I commented on at the practice match. Bring it on!

Amusing/cynical? article by Titus O'Reily.

Things I’d like to see from this season’s Women’s AFL:
  • Women footballers become so successful they commit scandals and are forgiven no matter what
  • After a transgression, a female footballer sort of apologises but in doing so actually blames a man
  • A group of women footballers joke about drowning a male journalist on radio then wonder why everyone is so upset
  • A female football glasses her boyfriend only to later gain a high-paying gig on national TV like nothing happened

Pretty funny I reckon. At the same time its accuracy is pretty sad.
