Game Day Carlton Reserves Game Day Discussion Rnds 2 - 19

Wasn’t concerned about the mark rather his response.

Also not writing him off just commenting on what he is showing right now. His attitude today was poor and can’t be allowed to continue.
Yeah, because a first year, second gamer isn't allowed to drop his head when he's getting towelled up by an experienced player in a well drilled side.

Our top pick in the national draft would have to be a KPD you would hope (if there's one available around the mark)
I'd really rather we picked a KPF.

If Harry goes down, we're ****ed because there's absolutely no-one behind him. TDK's a ruck, Gov is injured and/or useless, and Charlie hasn't played for 2 years. Out of the box options are Kennedy, Cripps and Jack, potentially Kemp in a year or two.

If we lose Weitering, we have at least got Jones behind him, Plow who can play taller, we've had Williamson playing KPD in the twos, Jack's visited the back half before, Marchbank's going to get a run at it at some point, Oscar is our next premiership CHF but is handy behind the ball as well, and Casboult is probably a better defender than he is anything else.

Ideally, we find a way to pick up one of each, but I would like us drafting a KPF first, if only because half the CHB's in the comp were failed full forwards. Gives us two bites at the thing.

Oh no... the guys who love to criticise players need their whipping boys... and because we won yesterday and Plowman smashed the sh*t out of O'Meara, they can't seriously complain about the senior players... but lets pick on a first year, second gamer in the VFL.
You must be joking. No one is picking on Carrol just making observations on what he has produced so far. No one has said he is a bust either.

You are ok with a young player who we want to develop into a quality player sitting on the ground after dropping a mark for 20 seconds from the barest of contacts while play goes on around him or do you want him to spring up trying to get back into the game? Letting s**t like that go will be great for his developement.

But to answer you, I didn't see the incident, so I can't comment. All I know is that there are a number of so called supportersr who seem to have jumped on Carroll for one incident. One game doesn't set his development. He now knows the low point of his career... now he can improve on that.

I see 10 tackles in stats by him. FMD, sounds like nonsense to suggest a guy that had 10 tackles is not putting in an effort.
This is kind of true. The problem is the definition of the tackle stat; it includes things which we wouldn't call a tackle.

I agree with your point overall though. I've always wondered if there's an uglier unspoken dimension about the accusations of laziness thrown at SPS by some of our fanbase, and it comes up repeatedly on a day like this.

Yes and I hope these things are pointed out to him so that he works on it. Just because people occasionally make an observation about thing/s they didn’t like from a player doesn’t mean they don’t want that player to succeed.

Was alway going to be an ugly day
OBrien, Hartley, Jeka, Ceglar,Brooksby
V
Delaney , Kemp, Gundy, Parks

Talls killed us last time when we had Mmcg Wooler and Radovanovic in the side

Just got back in from footy duties and about to head back out for more through tonight - so haven't had a chance to review this game yet.

SPS to my mind does not appear lazy either. I personally believe he has been played out of position for a long time and has been asked to distribute the ball from the backline.

He has always been great at "moving" through congested traffic, probably why they wanted him in the back line - but also kept his hands free and would always manage to distribute when caught.

My issue has always been his determination to kick short - however I also think the tactics he was being instructed with brought this about - but appears to have always been part of his game - its a shame because he can kick long insanely well when he decides to do it.

I want to see Dow, Obrien and SPS back in the seniors in their correct positions - would be awesome.

Understand most here have written them off. Shame.

Genuine question: when you watch Sam play, does he look lazy to you??

Unfortunately to my eye he often does and no, there’s no racial element in that

*just to add to that, if he’s not lazy, he’s not fit, which might be just as bad IMO...

Tendency to do that pigeon hole players is strong.

Pretty sure Carroll was getting praised by the coaches in his pre-season and practice matches prior to injury. I rate him highly.

Didn’t get to see this today but glad to hear Kemp had a good first outing. All waiting to see him debut but will need to earn it like anyone else. Exciting to get him on the park.

No, he doesn't. When there's no other option than to crack in, he goes as hard as anyone I've seen.

The problem is that, when the ball is loose either within or on the outskirts of a stoppage, he looks torn. Do I stay with my man, or do I go the ball? Do I escort it to the boundary, or keep it in? What would the coach want me to do? What can I do here? How can I get the ball safe, relieve the pressure on my team by setting us up?

Then, you couple that with what Jimmae's talking about: the fact that he can't or doesn't stride out fully. I think if you were to do a poll of AFL players, he would be the player who kicks from being completely stationary most. He's not naturally a booming kick, and he's not getting the metreage from momentum, either; what you get is a player who can't kick longer than 30m most of the time. When he gets a run and kicks, his options expand considerably.

I don't think he's fit, because we all know what he's done in a Carlton jumper. But I question the club, because how on EARTH has a player been allowed to develop their game to avoid running at all over the course of five seasons?

Not accurate. But there’s a concern that he has been dropped after playing a better game when sub a couple of weeks ago. There is disparity of treatment of some young players v older players. Not that this is entirely a bad thing ... younger players need to be hungrier.

I see Jim’s point and it’s valid to an extent, you can’t just give the guy a pass for all his poor efforts though IMO.

Occasionally he does go very hard at a contest and it’s like "yep, there’s the real Samo"... until the next contest where he might be suspect again, seems to pick and choose to me

His papers aren’t stamped with me but I do think a change of scenery might be best for all concerned now, especially if his 2nd Q effort today is anything to go by (that’s all I watched)
