Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

Gotta be a night session, I'd say you have a fair chance of getting both

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

What would be the best session to book tickets for to see either Federer or Stosur? (Or both if I can get a miracle...)

I think they tend to put the top drawing Aussies (so Hewitt and Stosur this year) on the second day. e.g. They'll most likely play round 1 on Tuesday, and round 2 Thursday etc. I assume one will be in the day one will be at night. I bought tickets on Tues hoping to see one of them.
With Federer I think they swap him around, I've seen him twice, both times on day 1.

Hope this helps a bit.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

I'm sure the massive money they get from Seven is not a massive mistake. Doesn't actually have much to do with TA, more with seven and Fox having an agreement.

if it's another year of absolute woeful coverage and no coverage of the outside courts. yeah it's a mistake. hopefully fox will show the aus open this year

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

The channel seven coverage is terrible actually, compare to channel nine and foxtel channels. I go every year to avoid there coverage. The fox matches at the Open were not that bad :D Also the id...tt cards they use to tell the public what a player has done the previous year is embarrassing because the year Rafa had this year was quite amasing. They will be there for 10 mins telling something I already know!!

Again, wasn't my point, TA would be happy with the money they are getting. And a FTA channel dedicated to tennis for two weeks, they must love that sort of exposure. Doesn't mean the coverage the coverage isn't shit (it is, but i'm am at the Open half the tiem so doesn't matter), just don't think TA are thinking too much about the quality of the coverage.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

I'll be getting a 5day ground pass as well as a couple of RodLaver passes..... just annoys me how expensive accommodation in Melbourne is at this time of year. Understandably though

I just hope Tommy Robrado plays so I can sledge the **** out of him after he robbed me of a $5,000 10 leg multi last year

The camera work is fine. It's the commentators. That guy who was once Hewitt's coach is a real pain and by far the worst.

"Last" year being the 2010 Australian Open?

If so, he screwed me too. Not to the tune of five grand, but I had a hefty bet riding on him to beat Giraldo, but he lost in straight. What a mug.

yep, Giraldo made him look stupid. I was so angry

It's my dream to get a 10 leg multi - not easy haha

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

The ground passes are excellent value. Night matches at Rod Laver are getting a bit rich though.

Agree - especially since they are all shown live on TV anyway. And it's rare to get a good match in the first few night sessions. Usually it's a straight sets flogging, so you're only paying to see a top seed, or an Australian (who will be destroyed by a top seed).

Ground passes are still the best tickets in town - although it makes it difficult for those who work during the week (and the middle Saturday/Sunday is PACKED with people).

Last year I found the after 5pm ground pass to be extraordinary good value for just $20. You leave work, go straight to the tennis and get to see a few good matches under lights with barely anyone else in the stands.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

It's probably been covered already, but I stumbled upon this on the WTA website and I thought it was worth mentioning.

DOHA, Qatar - She fought alongside the biggest names on the WTA for over a decade, right until the end too. And following her last match of this week's WTA Championships - Doha 2010, Elena Dementieva called it a career.

http://www.wtatour.com/news/20101029/elena-dementieva-calls-it-a-career_2256076_2201350

She's been coming to the Australian Open since the late 90's, and I always tried to catch one of her matches if I could. An entertaining player, she could make some devastating shots, but like so many of her peers, would often find a way to lose when she seemingly had a match under control.

She was in some cracking form early in 2010, and was unlucky to run into Henin in the second round of the Open in January. Reached the Semis of the French Open also, at which point, given the opponents awaiting her there, I thought she would finally break through and win her first Slam, but she again fell short. Regardless, 328 weeks in the top 10 is a testament to her staying power. A good career.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

You look at Dementieva, then you look at Schiavone. Then you just shake your head. No luck. Those match points vs Serena at Wimbledon 09..

And not like anyone here really cares about the WTA, but Serena is out of AO. You always like to have the best competing, but will be good to see someone else step up and win for once.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

You beauty! :thumbsu:

The new multi-year agreement, to commence with the 2011 Australian Open, includes live rights for all matches on televised courts, apart from Rod Laver Arena,
So they can show Hisense?? Interesting if true.

I mean I'll be attending the first week so I'll miss virtually all their coverage anyway, but this is still terrific news, good for tennis. :thumbsu:

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

Hey all, I was at the Westpac Centre pre Xmas (right across the road from RLA and the Tennis Centre) and I couldn't help but notice all the work going on the oval area.

I've seen the ads now, and they are calling it something like "Grand Slam Oval", or something like that, anyway, there was a lot of construction going on, and from what I could see, several huge screens being put up also in the area.

From what I have found it, it's going to be a little similar to the "rock stage" area found at the F1GP at Albert Park, where after play has stopped for the night (or in between day and night sessions) there will be entertainment on at the oval.

Just another reason to get your tickets now IMO, this could be the best Open yet, well off court entertainment wise anyway.:thumbsu:

Yeah mate, they had the Grand Slam Oval for the first time in 2010. Another big screen with tables and chairs for the people to relax and watch the tennis. It's a good area, lots of shops, but it gets very crowded and it takes quite a while to walk from one side to the other. For example in past years it'd take maybe a minute, it now takes at least 3 or 4, while trying to evade people all the time. Nothing worse when you're trying to hurry to the other side of the complex to get to a match and having to maneuver around the crowds. It's not a bad initiative, certainly has it's positives, but when the redevelopment is done it won't exist, so I guess it's only a short term thing.

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

Am going for the first time next year for 2 days. Cant wait!

You will love it. Best event in Australia.

Molik and Ebden got a WC today. Not surprised with Molik being chosen, even though I disagree with that choice. It will most likely be her last Aus Open, so I can understand them giving her one. There isn't much talent going on either with the younger girls. But she would want to have some sort of big turnaround to not embarass herself. And she better not be put on RLA or Hisense.

Agreed, it’s easily my favourite sporting event of the year. Going for the first week again. :thumbsu:

Re: 2011 Australian Open!!

with the conclusion of the boxing day test, the tournament is not all that far away from starting

hopefully the aussies all get bundled out in the first couple of days so we can have unbiased coverage :)
