Jetta lost his zip when he put on a little muscle. Isn't always the answer.

I don't think putting on muscle was the problem. I think it was opposition cutting of his access to run. They worked out which way he was going to go each time. He has to come around onto his preferred. He got caught taking them on at times but that weas against other really fast guys. He just found out he wasn't the fastest in the AFL. It will happen to them too. In fact Gary Rohan is faster than Jetts and always was.

why do you say ronke will probably move to the back line?

he was recruited as a mid/fwd whose disposal is questionable.

we also just recruited two defenders in the national draft.

1. The defenders we drafted are running defenders. They are not the Nick Smith, keep them strangled, type. Even though Murray is a runner he is also a Smithy type when it comes to his player. Since he has left there is a gap there as the defenders we have drafted are a different type. Only Brown would fit that mould. Murray was drafted as a small forward too but was switched to defence. We have no need for another small forward at this time as there is a surplus.

2. We recruited four if you count the Rookie Draft. Ling will be used further up the ground, on the wing I would think. I should think at least one of the other two will be too.

3. Ronke is not a bad kick at all. His kicking is far better than Murray's was when he was switched to defence. In fact Murray thrived on the breaking the lines type of footy and his disposal improved immensely. Ronke is a better disposer but as you say his disposal is questionable at times, the problem Ronke has had is lack of game time due to injury. Ronke & Murray were both opportunist forwards but Ronke far better than Murray. Murray was able to shut down small forwards and I think Ronke could too. It is about knowing what they are going to do and who better than a small forward to know what a small forward will do.

4. It does not matter what a player was drafted as. Nick Smith was a mid, Grundy a CHF, Lloyd a mid/forward, Rohan wing, Mills mid, Jones a mid/HB, Marsh a mid. Players often end up in far different positions than their draft position. While on players being recruited for a position, Pink was recruited as a forward but might end up in defence. But then again if the coaches have any flair he could end up in the midfield too. Pink is really versatile and a couple of things he has shown is that he never gives up, is quick often beating fast half backs in a race and he can dish the ball of and get contested ball.

Don't think that was it at all. He was still effective around the back of the pack but they wanted him to work on his contested footy because he would get bumped out of the way far too easy and the 2014 GF pretty much showed that up. I believe in building up or getting a bit tubby didn't suit him and they would have been better of playing to his strengths outside, only issue was that he was found out in the GF and that was always going to be exploited when it counted so they probably had to go down that road. All that said his own laziness was probably the biggest downfall. Hayward (who I made the comparison to which was a stupid comparison) will probably benefit from a bit of strengthening as he loves to bash in.

We're the best tackling team in the comp when we want to be. I think a session with a clutch athlete like LeBron or Serena or Tom Brady would probably be more helpful o_O

"Hey! Just be me."

If they want to learn how to tackle properly, we have a plethora of league sides in Sydney who tackle far better than anyone in the AFL does.(obviously).
It's very different though. RL only tackle front on, and they often go higher than in AFL and would give away a million free kicks. Heeney did a couple of great low RL style tackles last season, and gave frees away for it (even though he did nothing wrong).

A tackle which ties up the ball is ok, but the best tackle in AFL controls one arm, to stop the handball or disposal, and get the greatest chance for holding the ball (unless it's like last season and players just drop it when they're tackled). Wrestling is going to give better body position awareness for that.

Problem with finding the next Nick Smith, is finding someone willing to do it. Not the most glamourus position, back pocket.
I doubt we’ll see someone as good as Smooch for a while. He owns that back pocket at the SCG as much as Eddie Betts owns the forward pocket at Adelaide oval. But one involves making you and your opponent disappear while the other is exactly the opposite.

I love Smitty but did notice a few uncharacteristic f**kup's this year.

A few seemingly careless turnovers &/or what looked like poor execution leading to shots on goal. I guess turnovers are going to be made all the more obvious when you are playing where he does. A turnover leads to shots on goal & is magnified much more than if say Buddy loses a 1on1 on the wing for example.

None-the-less, they stuck out because it was so out of character for him to be the guy that gives up the ball so easy on an intercept kick or dodgy pressured handball. I just wonder if we'd changed something back there or if it was the speed of the game finally catching him out. He's never been quick quick but he's also not one I'm usually concerned when the pressure is up & he has the ball... but I was starting to get that way this year.

Jetts was injured almost from the first bounce in the 2014 GF. He was not found out because he just couldn't run. Probably should have been taken off.

I believe the best Aussie Rules tackle has always been the pinning of both arms in a bear hug like action from the back. If you do it from the front it will most likely end in a ball up. You pin the arms just below the elbow so they cannot move. This is very hard to do in the modern game as it is played so fast. But I have seen a couple. Parker, Newman & Buddy tackle this way regularly. The player simply cannot move his arms and his torso is also pinned and knees are buckling because you are pulling down and to the side.

Nick smith had a season I'm sure he'd rather forget. For him it was a terrible season. come to think of it for a fringe player it would have been a terrible season. This year Nick becomes a senior citizen of AFL football, over thirty, so his days are numbered. He might make it to 34-5 but his position is such a high pressure position that making it that far might be hard. Last year we were training a replacement in the reserves but he went to the Colliwobbles. I can see Ronke moving from the forward line to defence as I don't think any of the new players play that specialist shut down role. They are mainly running HB, wing or utility players.

You’re right, League players tackle differently, due to different rules but you’re wrong that they only tackle front on. They also tackle from the side and from the back.

Didn't say he was found out because he couldn't run. He was found out because he was soft. The club worked with him to strengthen him and of course they had to but it didn't help he lost a yard and was still pretty soft. My point is the club did what they had to do with Jetta but sometimes you just can't lead a horse to water and IMO they would have been better off just playing to his outside run strength. Probably happened before the 2014 GF on reflection anyway.

The problem with guys like smith is that when they lack natural talent or athleticism, they decline pretty quickly, not enough strings to their bow

Actually I think the 'use by dates' will be Smith, Kizza then Macca.

Smooch is almost fork ready imho, Keiren needs to be an attacking HFF which Horse h8s.

Maccas nouse wins out
