2019 2nd Ashes Test - Lords 14-18 August 2019

I would think J Pattinson will play this test, than they will rest him for the 3rd test, as I can't see him playing the full 5 test... With his history of injurys

Expecting a billiard board wicket, that is where England's strengths lie and will be hard to beat. Australia would be silly to pick Starc for this test. England should definitely pick Curran, very good player to have in your team in these conditions as he will contribute with both bat and the ball. As always, winning the toss would go a long way in determining the winner.

No changes, the openers the only ones under fire after that performance for not getting us off to a good start in either innings. The bowlers were the best I have seen from an aussie attack in many years, relentless pressure.

Pattinson bowled 8 overs in the second innings.

He had the same workload as a ODI just about.

I think he will be fine.

Murtagh, Woakes x 2 and Anderson have been the chief destroyers in the last 2 tests here for low totals on greentops.

They all bowl mid pace and stand the seam up.

Basically, Starc would be a terrible choice imo. The slope is irrelevant if the pitch is a greentop and is jagging around anyway.

If anyone, it should actually be Hazlewood.

Siddle looms as the dangerman here out of anyone based on Edgebaston, he got the most seam movement of all the bowlers (England & Australia) and bowled a threatening consistent 4th stump line for most of the match. He's the most similar bowler in the Aussie setup to Woakes/Anderson/Murtagh as well in terms of pace, which is important on seaming decks, banging it in can almost be detrimental to movement.

I'll be so hacked off if they drop Sids. He has a heap of experience on English wickets now.

It was a throwback to the Siddle-Johnson-Harris-Lyon attack that gave absolutely nothing in 2013/14.

The selectors have had a good think about how we need to play in England and gone for the common sense selections of English specialists who bowl wicket to wicket (ie Siddle). To dismantle this attack now would be a tremendous shame. Siddle at 83mph holding up an end isn't as sexy as Starc bowling 92mph inswinging yorkers but the latter hasn't materialised for some time now. Dropping Hazlewood and Starc may be the kick up the backside they need. They should be made to earn their places back in the team. I'm not going to berate Starc too much because he's always put his body on the line and played through pain. Whilst that is to be admired, we really shouldn't change a thing at Lord's. All things being equal, however, my gut says Starc will come in for Pattinson.

Be a stupid decision to take Pattinson out, if it's swinging which is starc's only go to Patto will get it to swing and be more accurate, little bit of luck and he has 6/not many in that 1st innings.

For the Australians, I suspect the plan was not to play Siddle in the London games. That might not be the case for Lord's now. First innings, Cummins would have been the bowler under pressure but he got bettera s he got more work into him. He possibly just needed the long form game time, and got very good by late in the English first innings.
Bancroft was a line-ball decision, and might be under some pressure already but a win probably saves him for now.

Presumably Anderson is done for a while, and maybe career ended. Sad way to go out if that eventuates. They'll probably bring in Archer, I'm not sure about his test match credentials. Some of the slower ball stuff that is so successful in 50 and 20 over cricket isn't wicket taking in the long form, and whether he can do longer spells and back up again is questionable. the quicker one might be dangerous, if he can get some movement.
Moeen Ali surely gets replaced. But who have they got?
There’s no way Cummins would’ve been under pressure. None at all.

They’ll do something stupid like that. Drop Pattinson for Starc. I’ve no doubt they’ll pick Starc but it makes no sense whatsoever to me. I guarantee one of Siddle or Pattinson gets dropped but it will be a horrendous call. Starc is a white ball bowler. I get he has a great strike rate at test level but he leaks runs and is inconsistent.

No changes.

The thing about the Lord's slope is that it is perfect for seam and swing bowlers who can bowl wicket-to-wicket and put it on a good line-and-length, provided that they bowl from the right end. Siddle most certainly fits that category, as does Pattinson when he's not getting carried away searching for wicket balls. Cummins is also lethal when it seams, even if he bowls a little short at times.

Starc can swing the brand new and old ball, but IMO he has nowhere near the control required to get the best out of any Lord's surface.

No changes, it is not going to be an mcg style dead track where you can justify marsh coming in and starc hasn't bowled well enough in tests lately to justify taking a spot from the three quicks.

It's nice to be up in england going to Lord's without a whole lot of tough calls to make, top order just needs to step up now and take pressure of smith.

It'd be hard to do worse than Ali but it will be interesting to see if England bring Leach in. His record is pretty good but I hadn't seen much of him so from a quick youtube search, I had a look at his 2017 wickets (too much time on my hands). 41/51 of his wickets came against right handers. It obviously would be a move to try and get Smith out but I feel our lefties in Warner, Ussie, Wade and Head wouldn't be too fussed about his inclusion.

Bancroft is on thin ice. I can handle back to back low scores, that's cricket, but his technique in both innings meant a low score was inevitable. Literally looked less comfortable than both teams' tailenders. A concern. Having nobody knocking the door down will help his cause but I can't see him lasting the series.

I don't recall seeing him, must have doe at some point, so didn't name him as the replacement despite his being the name thrown around. Were his wickets against right handers because he didn't get left handers out, or just didn't bowl as much to left handers.

It was all his wickets from a full county season so I assume he bowled plenty to left handers. Doesn’t look to be a big turner. Lots of his wickets were straight ones that the right hander played for a bit of spin in defence and got done lbw. A bit SOK like.

He will be a walking wicket all series. I'm no fan of Labuschagne or M Marsh but even they would do more with the bat than Bancroft.

from memory also like SOK he's dominated at domestic level for a while without getting a lookin to the test team.

Spot on. I’ve seen a lot of bowlers bowl genuinely quick, but really only have breakthrough spells once in a while. Brett Lee was another one, Starc the same. Most of the time they’ll bully the tail, and most of the time they’ll lack consistency. That’s why someone like Dale Steyn was absolutely lethal. Pace with control. Control as good as I’ve seen.

We don’t need Marsh. We don’t need a fourth seam bowler. There’s literally no body of evidence to support Marsh coming in. We are sacrificing a batting position in that case.

Australia will probably bring in Starc. Wouldn’t be my choice but that seems to be the noise.

For the Poms, Archer will come in, Ali and Denly should probably be dropped, although Denly may survive purely due to a lack of batting options. One or both of Leach and Curran will probably come in.

The calls from the English will be to juice up a green top. This leaves Australia in trouble against the likes of Woakes, Broad and Curran who can swing it round corners. It also could somewhat nullify Lyon. That said, it could also backfire - apart from Root, there’s barely an English bat averaging more than mid 30s. Roy and Burns are just starting out, Denly looks a walking wicket at the moment, Buttler and Bairstow look horribly out of form which leaves Root, Stokes and the tail. As shaky as the Aussies are with the bat, if England bat the way they did against Ireland they can just about kiss goodbye to the Ashes.
