Yes, it is way overs. You have a player who, while when fit is one of the best key forwards in the league, has only managed 11 games in the last 2 seasons, is out of contract and a free agent next year and has told you that he doesn't want to be at your club anymore, he has nominated our club as his only preferred destination. That's a whole lot more leverage for us than you in this trade. Two top 10 picks isn't going to happen.
I wouldn’t agree that it’s more leverage for you guys when he’s contracted but it’s definitely one that will go down to the wire.

Papley is contracted until 2023 and it looks like he is gone. Players are breaking contracts all over the place, they are next to meaningless when it comes to clubs keeping players who want to be somewhere else. As I said, he has only one year left on his contract and then he is a free agent, he can come to us that way if you don't trade for him now. You won't get two top 10 picks this season and you will get even less next season.

I've got to say, watching such a Swan in a Carlton jumper, having pure Swans blood in him, is going to hurt.
I'm actually quite angry with him, fair or not.
Deep down King, I really hope you are right & he gets to play regular Bullants footy with his mate Newman, bleeding that sh*thole club of 600 to 700 K per season.
Another wasted 4 years of development into a bloke who was digging holes before we came along.

Does hurt Ted. All I ever wanted to do was play for the team I followed. South Melbourne. Never got near it unfortunately. At least I got to play my whole career for a club that wore the South Melbourne Gurnsey though. Kids are very different these days though and Although I am dirty on him I can understand it. Having coached this generation of young player I can understand the mindset. Money, Mates and Women in that order.

What chance do we have if Papley who has strong family ties to the club goes back to Melbourne you would of thought Papley would be the last to leave.

Yeah so he’s a restricted FA which means we can match and force a trade right?
Anyway I was just asking what people thought a fair trade was, not wanting to start a staring contest etc.

Just joined social media today the reason why because of the rumors of Swans going after Daniher and looking at dropping pick 5 and 9 (if Papley goes for 9) I'm reading on the AFL Website, surely this cannot be the case. A team struggling down back, no grade A ruckman, short elite midfielders and we may give up the castle for Daniher who is an injury liability. You can get any player in the comp for pick 5 & 9 including a certain B Grundy (if he was ever interested going north). One we will be too top heavy, but still struggling for a tall key experienced defender and a proven ruckman. Its insane if the club goes down this track, not just the picks but kills the cap also going forward. If we do get Daniher and he fails to play surely there has to be consequences for management at the club Recruitment/ Harley etc....
Looking forward to the experience on big footy, one passionate loyal travelling supporter.
I'm with you BigO.
With all we need in the midfield, ruck & back, if all we are doing is losing Papley & Jones & gaining Daniher, we are just treading water.

Surely we have something else up our sleeves.

Hey guys sorry for the intrusion. Is 5 and 9(assuming you get that) way overs in this trade?
I find it real hard to get my head around what a fair deal would be.
At this point of the night, for me a fair deal would be that he chose you in the first place over us, so we should drag it along until it's close & say no thanks, keep all you Danihers at the Bombers.
When he does come to us, then I 'll feel different.

Yep. Pretty devastated to be honest. I really thought he’d be a one club player for us.

what chance? No chance. Strong family ties and still wants to go home.

I just don't get how a player playing every game for the season can be used as evidence that our medical team isn't capable of getting players on the park. No doubt Sam has had a couple of bad injury interrupted years, but since 2012 he has managed 20 games or more in 6 out of 8 years.
Agreed, the Sam Reid breaks down all the time stuff is just plan wrong, 2013 and 2018 being exceptions.

None are breaking them & getting interstate though. It's one way traffic. Fantasia the latest.

You can match and force a trade next season, but you will have even less leverage than you do now. It is in your interest to make the trade now. You know that, we know that.

I'm just being blunt and direct about the situation. If Joe was coming off two injury free seasons where he had been one of the leading goal scorers in the game, then sure, we would be looking at multiple first round picks to make this trade happen. But he isn't coming off that, he has had persistent injury struggles which have hampered his output and have lowered his trade value because there is a significant risk attached to signing him on a significant contract.

Damaged goods, wants out, only one year left on his contract... It all adds up to you not having a strong hand. Sucks for you guys, but that's the way this situation stands right now.

At what point has Papley ‘broken’ his contract?

He has asked to be traded, if it doesn’t happen to our liking he plays for us next year and beyond until we either trade him or he plays out the four years.

Personally, you take 9 and run for a small forward.

Not really, there has been rumours for 18 months that he was struggling being away from his family and long term girlfriend.

What is different this year is that his good mate is at Carlton and was able to alert them to the opportunity.

He has asked to be traded despite being contracted for a number of seasons still. If you don't want to call that breaking the contract because it requires the club to choose to release him from it, then fine, but in my opinion it amounts to the same thing. The club is backed in to a corner when players put in these kinds of transfer requests.

Which is not to say pick 9 would be a bad return and that we might end out ahead as a result of the transaction.

Help me out here guys.

if we get #9 off Carlton and want to split it. Who would we be talking to?
Geelong would be the first that comes to mind, they now have a few later first round picks as a result of the Kelly trade.

You undid your argument in the first paragraph ‘it requires the club to choose to release him’.

You are not breaking a contract if it’s not your decision to terminate it.

All he has done is asked.
