ATP Tennis Masters Cup Shanghai 2006

Yeah the ATP calendar is crap. There's too many meaningless games in every sport. Look at one-day cricket for example.

We should have quality not quantity.

The difference between football and tennis is that, there is no off season in tennis and this burns most player.Playing more than 100 matches in a year will burn federer sooner or later. Sampras in an article recently suggested that as players grow 27+ they must pick and choose their tournaments wisely to extend their playing career. Why do you reckon players are pushing for a change in the ATP calender?

of course eventyually he will be knocked off number 1. Whether it is injury, loss of form, loss of interest, burnout or whatever it is every number one in every spoort is there to be shot at and one day will be dethroned.

There is no reason to believe Federer will be injured. He does play a lot because he more or less reaches every final of every comp he enters but he usually wins easily in 2 or 3 sets so his time on court is not necessarilly all that much greater than someone else playing 70 games but struggling through. Indeed in a couple of years he may welldecide to scale back to a core of 12 or 13 tournaments anyway. I suspect that if he can win a French he won't then go on knocking himself out on clay, a surface which drags his genius down to the level of those who thrive on that slow sloggers terrain, while he can dominate on grass and hards.

Jordan faded. gretsky faded, Federer will fade but even if he never won another match his 2004/2006 is etched in history as the most sustained 3 year period of dominance ever and it is highly likely that by the time he does fade he will have broken every record worth having. For example Sampras has 30 Slam/TMS/Masters Cup successes. Agassi has 26. Federer already has 24 such successes. It is highly probably that this time next year at age 26 Federer will have equalled or broken Sampras big tournament winning record and it is probable that he will have broken Agassi's record by mid season. he is already a phenomenon.
