You can’t rate the pitch poor because South Africa can’t bat
Australia lost 14 wickets for ~250 and were well on the way to losing 20 wickets for about 350.
The pitch wasn't that bad on day 1, but it became worse on day 2 with more variable bounce and similar or more seam movement.

Below average is the correct result. It wasn't really poor or dangerous but it was a little bit too tricky to bat on.

Last years pitch was a good one, enough in for the Aussie bowlers to roll England for 147 and 297 but enough there for the batting side that Australia could make 425 thanks to a Travis Head 150.

MCG last year was a bit of a green top as well - but it did not receive a below average rating despite England being rolled for 185 and 68 because there wasn't quite as much seam movement and variable bounce compared to this year's Gabba.

England just took 20 wickets 3 times in a row on those 'lifeless' Pakistani roads.
