It's a bit surprising and disappointing to see how many people want to see someone seriously hurt before the game was called off. Were you blokes even watching the game? This was the most obvious unsafe pitch call you could possibly imagine.

Cricket Australia = Clueless ********

Should have transferred it to Marvel and made the announcement early in the week so people could get refunds or make tickets available when they knew that rain was coming Friday and Saturday

Is Marvel ready yet or are they relying on no game until Dec 21 to be ready for the first match?

It wasn't unsafe
It was just very difficult for the batsman to score runs
Abandoning a game is commonplace in cricket but it really should be the last resort rather than the default position

It was unsafe. Right call was made.

The thing with Sutherlands deliveries were pitching of a similar length:

It was the 5th ball which was the straw that broke the camels back.

You'd only get 6 or 7 across the whole game that would spit like that, it just gets dicey if one of those 6 or 7 are at the batsmen

Old mate is right in that tweet, pre 90s there were some dicey pitches and it was always play on.

Since Hughes death it's a different game

I didn't see any really dangerous balls.

It was seaming around and bouncing a bit higher off a good length than normal but it wasn't like batsmen were getting hit in the head

The umpires could have just told the fast bowlers to not bowl any bouncers if they thought it was really that dangerous.

The last ball of the match would have been dangerous if it was straight.

The thing about this game is there is more people talking about this abandonment than the game itself- which cant be good for Cricket Australia.

Some people will never miss a chance to scream that 'wokeness' is ruining cricket, or that the current generation is 'soft'.

To be fair there wasn't any nasty deliveries where the batsmen was in danger of getting hurt.

Melbourne Renegades statement after tonightā€™s match against Scorchers was abandoned:

On Sunday morning, the club was made aware that the GMHBA Stadium pitch sustained some water damage during Saturdayā€™s heavy rain. Kardinia Park Stadium Trust undertook work throughout the day to improve the condition of the wicket and match officials deemed the surface safe to commence play.

Melbourne Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten said:

ā€œOur first thoughts are with our fans - the loyal supporters we have across Geelong and Victoria. We are incredibly disappointed in tonightā€™s events. We had an important match against the Scorchers and our fans have a right to feel incredibly let down. It should have been a great night of cricket and we will discuss the outcomes of that in the days ahead.ā€

ā€œThe club will ensure that all general public ticket purchasers are refundedā€
