Dwayne Russell: Collingwood's Eddie McGuire puts foot down over Port Adelaide’s prison bars | Adelaide Now

Port Adelaide’s AFL team will be allowed to wear its iconic prison bars jumper twice in its 150th year but Collingwood boss Eddie McGuire has made sure it won’t be an ongoing feature, writes Dwayne Russell.

... And the Power can also market and sell next season’s 150th celebration configuration of its black and white prison bar jumper at AFL games forever more.
The irony of the yearly fight with the AFL and McGuire being a fight Port is destined to never win, is that in reality, it’s a losing fight Port likes having anyway.
Because it’s a unifying rally cry for the fans, and enhances the us-against-them “never tear us apart” persona.

Oh yeah. This is it. This is the crux of the opportunity we have at hand.

The power of the fight makes us stronger.
It also makes the guernsey a more powerful icon of the club.
The fight is worth having, even if we never win.

We will never give up the bars.

For what reason does the club choose to fight this alone without the voice of the members?

When I imagine KT being our advocate at AFL House I think about KT being the advocate at the sanfl when the structure of our sanfl teams were presented and rejected at the blink of an eye. I have zero faith.

I disliked your post because of Eddies sentiment, not because you posted it Lockhart Road

Why does Eddie even get to put his foot down?
And what does it mean by ".. made sure it won't be an ongoing feature"?
Did KT make a deal?

Yeah, the strip is completely different to the Wobbles' one. Doesn't affect their marketing and branding one iota. We aren't going to include the Magpie logo on ours. Only was ever going to be for 2 or 3 games a year. Never in a game in a direct timeslot clash with the Woods.

Absolutely staggered beyond belief that this has come to such a ludicrous state.

Make sure we have one "special" celebration EVERY year from now on. Show Eddie and the world it makes diddly squat variance to Collingwood's financial impact bottom line at all. Desensitise the AFL community to the PB's, and in time we can expand the number of games we wear it at each season.

Stealth is the key here. Then overpower them when the tie is right to strike.

As s**t as this may sound, we have gone from never, ever again to twice next year and on special occasions.

That’s a of step in the right direction, when Eddie goes as ‘never again’ isn’t on the table, then things may progress!

Rejoice! (A bit).

A club with our history has a Premiership anniversary celebration almost every year, I’d say ANZAC day is pretty special too. As are showdowns!

This is a win.

Have I missed an official announcement that the PB will be worn twice in 2020?

No.

But it was interesting that it went from once next year to twice in Dwayne's article.

At a bare minimum, we should be able to wear the bars in all Showdowns. It would be a travesty if we let this campaigner from Collingwood dictate the league's decisions. Grow a spine, KT.
ANZAC day is far more important than showdowns and puts anyone who argues against it in a very awkward situation.

Look forward to the announcement.

I'm going to be bitterly disappointed if our club allows itself to be dictated to by another club though. Even if it's through Port people in the media, this idea that Eddie can dictate whatever he likes needs to be challenged.

If, again, the public narrative surrounding the bars is that we wear it at Eddie's behest and he is in control, I'll be furious. The club can't allow that. It's a ridiculous and corrupt situation and someone in the media need to do their job and call it out.

Our case is one of natural justice and it's being denied because the media and administration is full of cowards.

That's actually great, I hadn't thought of that angle. There's really no reason to say we should wear it in Showdowns over any other week, but there is a strong reason on the last weekend of every April. We want to honour our fallen ANZACs on ANZAC Day weekend by running out in the same guernsey that they ran out in. Would be dicey for anybody to argue against that one, especially the president of a club which has been allowed by the AFL to monopolise the ANZAC Day game for two decades.

Imagine if Michelangelo Rucci showed a shred of investigative reporting talent in his life and ran with this. Actually getting to the heart of a real, meaningful story.

But no, instead content to auto-word generate nonsensical flipflop arguments until he confuses himself into irrelevant retirement.

Michelangelo, when you read this, know that you are a disappointment to yourself, your profession and your community.

Not almost. It is indeed every year. Here you go the last few years and the next few. Plenty of opportunities to wear the bars and celebrate a flag each year which means several games a year (ok we won 3 before the bars, 1884, 1890 and 1897).
