Carlton's 2016 Offseason Thread

And by the sounds of it Pickett won't be ready for a while anyway.

I heard he will be ready for light training ASAP and full contact training when the boys return from their christmas break. He will build up his frame but really need him to get his foot right to build up his engine.

I'd rather have explored Lyons and Pick 13 than taken Smedts or Palmer.

I won't let you get in the way at all. Happy clappers will always find a positive in even a mediocre situation.

But Lyons may well be the list clogger you are desperate to avoid. Crows didn't want him...only GCS, desperate for mature bodies, took a flyer with a late pick. Why is that? Would cost ultimately more money, a higher pick and longer terms than Palmer. Smart SOS.

Palmer is an average player but would not call him a crab. Similar situation to Wright and Wright impressed this season. I think Palmer is a good pick up for the club and will give plenty of run and drive and abit of creativeness.

He's adequate. He's near perfect for the next year or two...improves our starting 22, hard worker who sets a good example, only takes a spot from the likes of Kerridge or Lamb, next to no cost, easily moved on when Cuningham/Pick 5/pick 25 is ready to take his spot.

Lyons had shown more potential in the last 12 months than Smedts or Palmer had and we'd have another selection in the first round.

Go back over the opinions of fans from the clubs of the three players being discussed and it was only Lyons that had home town fans rating him on the whole in a positive way.

Nobody else wanted Smedts or Palmer either so not sure how that argument stands up.

Added Lyons and pick 13 = less salary than Smedts and Palmer.

Thats right - fingers crossed we get Brodie with pick 5

With that kind of injury I wouldn't be wanting him to bulk up too much before the injury was fully healed and been through a season of solid testing of it.

Get him in there

If you guys can fix his attitude to rehab and get him fit, you will have a great player on your hands.
His skin folds are very poor at the moment though, so a lot of work to do before he will play a game.
Probably will debut for Carlton in 2018.

If he's so good then why did the GCS only bid for him and Adelaide gave him for peanuts

not being able to settle in Sydney isnt an attitude problem I don't think - I hope I am right.

Lyons value is established. What we think doesn't really matter. We obviously didn't rate him as a long term solution for our midfield.

You can mourn the loss of 13 all you like. Clearly it would never have been ours.

Why did you think the relatively straightforward matter of Marchbank and Pickett was settled with two minutes to spare on the last day? Clearly GWS were expecting 13, and when it became clear that we may not get it they took the best deal they could get.

We would have effectively traded Gibbs for the lesser picks spent on Marchbank and Pickett. Can you imagine...running out next year with Cripps, Lyons, occasionally Murphy and the promise of a 2017 Geelong first round pick? Oh the humanity. Smart SOS.

After hearing Cal Twoomey's assessment of the two GWS kids we picked up no way we would have even entertained handing over any kind of first round pick for those players. They arent worth it.

We could have kept 13.

Surprising. Cal being such a supporter of all things Carlton and all.

Perhaps not worth it to you. However SOS obviously valued them, and GWS don't make a habit of pushing hard to extract value for players they don't rate.

Not a chance we kept 13. Convenient for your argument, but not a chance.

Cripps, Gibbs, Murphy, Curnow, Palmer, Thomas and pick 5

Is better than Cripps, Lyons, Murphy, Curnow, Palmer, Thomas and pick 5

Put your house on it.

Doubt it Daisy will be at the club next year unless his output goes through the roof - but can only dream. Will be nice if he really takes this season by the balls same with Murphy.

Then why didnt anyone else go for him if he is so good?

Who knows, doesn't mean he's no good either. He played 20 games in a team far superior to our list.

Just listening to the Fox Football draft podcast they are saying Lyons was a steal and the champion data people rate him highly.

I doubt they rate any of Palmer or Smedts in that light.

He is an average player for starting 22 he is half of what Gibbs is in terms of playmaking abilities.

He offered an assessment of what they bring and it doesn't match the excitement levels many people are placing on them.

IMO we would have been a big chance to keep 13. Marchbank and Pickett weren't worth that much with their injuries. Taking Palmer's salary is the sweetheart deal we did for them this draft.

We're going to be bottom 3 again next season. Keeping Gibbs for Lyons and another first round kid wouldn't change that fact.

Again, just a nothing statement...weren't worth that much??? To who? They were to the two clubs involved in the trade, what else matters?

Your opinion on keeping 13 does not reconcile with what actually played out.

Cal Twomey's thoughts on anything Carlton related are about as credible as a Rucci article on Adelaide.
