Autopsy Cats lose to Blues by 2 points - should never have been near it.

I know why....check out the footage of their work on Cripps...showed him zero respect at stoppages..

The coach had Narkle on Cripps ( physically not yet in the same ball park) then Selwood and Dangerfield were given the task and were nowhere near Cripps at the stoppages...they actually ran away from him on multiple occasions while Pittonet was having a field day...

Its so easy to pick out the usual whipping boys while not seeing the woods for the trees.........Dangerfield's contribution so far this season has been very, very ordinary...to put it mildly. He was taken apart by DeBoer in the GWS game, and was...adequate... against the Hawks. ...and poor on the weekend.

I love Danger...he's a terrific footballer and critical to our success. Perhaps its time he steps back from his media and re-assess where he's at right now.
Don't disagree but think that it is a bit tough to just single out the three best players and not give everyone a 'bake'

Yep, he should've torn every single one of them a new orifice.

And he should be demanding, insisting, that the younger guys step up faster and better. The older guys are on their last legs, and don't have much more to give. The improvement must come from the younger guys.

True. But at the same time the younger guys need to be developed properly. That is, selected in their best position and given time to grow. They are chopped and changed around the field, and in and out of the team, all the time. Why is Taylor being selected ahead of Kolodjashnij? Why is Steven - especially right now - being selected ahead of Constable? And so on. Looking forward to reading the crap about how well Steven is "spreading" right now. Only thing spreading about him is his stomach.

If Scott's wondering why it's a problem here's one obvious thing - stop jamming all your pets into the team no matter what. Just stopping that would be an improvement.

I think he's far too happy with himself. That isn't going to happen.

Wholeheartedly agree. Should've included the development aspect in my post.

He is selfish and runs one way. Has been this way since his arrival at the club. Doesn't help that the coaching staff are constantly massaging his ego and telling him how great he is.

we really need another good user down back that can actually defend too

Harder to teach someone to distribute than to defend. With that in mind, would love to know just why Clark isn't playing when we desperately need run out of defence. He won't become a better defender playing scratch matches. I think they're hoping MOC will give that gallop, and he has some flair, but Clark is superb. What's he done, or not done, to be banished?

It does look like Stephen was picked for reasons other than footy, a decision that might have been well-meaning but ends up being cruel to him, and arrogant about Carlton. Overall, our trading for players from other clubs seems more focused on the end of season school reunion (friends of the rich and famous? Carlton, anyone?) than genuine team needs.

We seemed undersized in defence.

We need run off half back (come back Kolo, come back Clark); mids who run both ways and lay tackles that stick; young players keen to impress (remember 2011 when there was a guaranteed 4 young players every week but one); and senior players who respect their opposition regardless of their reputation, so they don't go into games assuming they're won, and don't stand and watch their man with their hands on their hips because they've just tried to add to their highlights reel and need a brief holiday afterwards.

Had a chance to finally watch the first half replay uninterrupted.
First quarter, we weren't that bad, effort-wise. There were too many bad kicks, handballs, and missed marks. The Blues capitalized on them you can see them gain confidence.
Where we definitely suck is that 'zone' defense as the opposition come out of their 50. They lead well and marked easily. But what was hard to watch was how they just parked in between the Cats made it look easy. The guys must be coached to do more than just stand there. It's especially evident when there is only one possible opponent about to enter a particular Cat's zone and our guy doesn't anticipate him getting the pass. The kicker has only a certain to make the kick, he's looking in that direction...I can see how CS might be getting pissed off.

That Hawkins free against for pushing, then the 50 for Cripps was a bit of a turning point right before the half.
It is good news to hear CS is beginning to fire up a bit. I think that edge has been missing.

Yes. This. Again and again and again and it drives me NUTS. Can never quite work work out whether it's structural (our positioning), over coaching (there is a hypothetical that is being followed), or a lack of confidence.

It leads to chains of possession by the opposition as we are successively outnumbered, and we tend to prefer to hang back and obstruct (without stopping the disposal) rather than taking the player on. Except, of course, for the two or three players who specialise in flinging themselves theatrically at a disappearing ball carrier in order to simulate effort.

Danger lining up for goal holds the ball on a peculiar angle and I think it contributes massively to his shanking. Whats worse, is I noticed it V Carlton, but noticed it originally back in 2017. How come no one has ever tried to correct it?
Ia anyone game enough. Agree though his kicking can be very ordinary. Needs Malcom Blight to show him how

I was shocked at how bad steven was. Shouldn't be anywhere near our AFL side for a few weeks after that performance.

lol terrible recruiting. He will never come close to the player he was 2 years ago at St Kilda.
He does not look fit either.

Having said that, Tim Kelly isn't setting the world on fire either but due to his age, he has next year to get back to his best.

Agree. But given he had been stabbed a few weeks ago surely there were grounds for a delay.

It sheds light on the development of our youngsters, or lack thereof, and the mindset of our MC that they defaulted to an older, unfit, overweight, distracted player than give the valuable gametime and experience to a youngster who will be a part of our future.

Nope. Getting him shed light on that stuff. Playing him if he's not ready is purely a PR exercise. Any semi high profile player drafted to a club will always be given a chance for that reason. It is choosing that player at the draft or trade window that reflects the club's position.

Got to hand it to you guys as a group of supporters. Your posts are good quality, mostly constructive in nature and in good taste. Cats will be ok moving forward. With this COVID19 impacted season at our feet, Im not sure we're really seeing the best of any team.

Been a weird year.

Good Luck for the rest of the season...I'm sure Gs will do well.

There are always a few that get a little emotional after a loss, but most have seen the writing on the wall for a while. H&A dominance with finals let downs has been the top bar we've reached in the past 9 years, so the mask slipping at KP in a one off game is hardly a tragedy.

Your boys were actually superb for three quarters, until the almost inevitable jitters and probably lack of legs kicked in. Main thing is they held on one way or another. I genuinely hope the Blues have a good season because there is some exciting talent there and the fans are due some good times.

Nice Post:

The thing with Geelong is this. Your still a destination club. Players like and want to live down there and be part of the club. They've been some posters that speak of going to the draft and drafting. Let me tell you..As a Carlton supporter, that is a very very painful process. Having a decent recruitment division within the club is paramount. You draft a little, free agency a little..team list improves. Going full rebuild hurts like hell. You have a recruiter that most clubs would love. He'll do his thing no doubt.

Im not sure of the direction Carlton going at the moment. Theres alot of talk of an exciting list but much of remains undeveloped. We came close to losing on the weekend. If the last qrtr was 10 mins longer, the result would of been very different.

Guess we'll soon see where the Blues list is at. Im abit on the fence atm..

Yes, they will be given their moment, but wise heads will carefully choose its timing.

The selection of Steven was woeful.

They knew he was in terrible condition, but still played him. That sent a poor message to our youngsters, and any intended message to supporters and the footy world about what he'll bring to the GFC as a profile recruit has backfired badly. They threw him under a bus.

Poor management whichever way you look at it.

All of this was true in October 2019. Now it's just playing out exactly as we predicted.

Getting him was a mistake, even if he goes on to have a cracking year that drags us to another prelim. But how they are handling him since we obtained him, through hell or highwater, tells me nothing about the club management that I didn't already know. This goes back to the Clark and HMac days.

Agreed.

The balance of our list is out of whack, and has occurred because its been over-rated, which in turn has led to the belief it can just be 'topped up' to achieve success
