Changes for the showdown?

^^^ I'd be happy with that. Carr v Lower is line ball though, it's a question of should we give Lower an extended run to see if he's up to it or should we give Carr a Showdown where he does his best work and see if it can cure his Fremantlitis? I'm leaning towards Carr in for Lower next week with Lower as first emergency and then bring Lower back for an underperformer the week after for his 'extended run'.

Burgoyne an Automatic Inclusion, says Cassisi.

www.afl.com.au said:
PORT Adelaide skipper Dom Cassisi believes Shaun Burgoyne will be a walk-up starter in Showdown XXVII at AAMI Stadium on Sunday, provided the star onballer gets through training this week.

Burgoyne, 26, has not played since suffering severe bone bruising to his knee in the round three win over Melbourne.

The All-Australian has endured a frustrating rehabilitation involving surgery and multiple setbacks, but has ramped up his workload over the past two weeks.

Cassisi said he expected Burgoyne to receive an immediate AFL call-up despite having spent more than three months on the sidelines.

“Shaun’s a class player, so if he gets through all the training this week you’d think he’d come back into the team,” Cassisi said on Monday.

“Shaun’s a vice-captain of our club, so he’d know that he has to come in and give everything he’s got.

“We’d have to manage his game-time to look after him a little bit if he does play, but match committee is not until Thursday so I can’t say whether he’ll play or not.”

Defender Troy Chaplin is an automatic selection having served a two-match-ban for rough conduct.

Hamish Hartlett (hamstring) and Matt Thomas (knee) were also in the Power’s best 22 before getting injured and will come under strong consideration.

Veteran Josh Carr was dropped for Sunday’s clash with West Coast, but performed strongly in the SANFL on the weekend and could earn a recall based on his outstanding history in Showdowns.

Peter Burgoyne was good, without being outstanding, for the Port Adelaide Magpies and will also be in the mix.

Cassisi said good performances from young players like Matthew Broadbent, Paul Stewart and Nick Salter against the Eagles meant everyone at Alberton was on edge.

“The guys that played on the weekend and the young guys in particular, did a really good job,” he said.

“If it’s unfortunate and a few of those guys do miss out this week then the guys coming in have got to make sure they come in with the same effort and intensity the young guys brought on the weekend.”

Round 16 predictably turned out to be an up week for the inconsistent Power, who have not won consecutive games since April.

Cassisi said the emotion of the Showdown would help his side safeguard against a possible letdown this weekend.

“The Showdowns are games you just get up for. It’s one of the biggest games in the state and we know what’s on the line,” Cassisi said.

“People have every reason to believe that we won’t get up to play this week, but that’s not going to be the case.

“Our effort and intensity on the weekend was what it needs to be and we look forward to improving that this week in the Showdown.”

As of Monday less than 2000 tickets remained for the Showdown.

If junior gets through training, he'll be an automatic selection, along with chaplin:

The article goes on to state that thomas, hartlett, carr and senior will be strongly considered and that some of the less experienced players may miss out.

No mention of pettigrew though, poor guy is just totally out of it and completely off the radar

I'd be very happy for shaun to be in the 22.

I think the players in the most danger would be thurstans and krakouer, followed by lower and stewart. Hang on, that's most of our defence

Hmmm.

Chaplin comes in as a direct replacement for Thurstans
Shaun comes in for krakouer - salopek moves back as rebounding defender
Hartlett replaces lower or stewart and also works in defence and does some rebounding with sal

Broadbent & Salter would be very unlucky to miss, Davenport you'd think would be safe

Choco said in his presser that Stewart played his best game for the club and actually "looked like an AFL player" so I would suspect he will be safe. There is no way Davenport will be dropped on the back of his performance. If the selction commitee are looking for outs, I would guess that would come from

Lower - the fall guy
Salter - yeah he kicked 2 but still a soft target for replacement
Pearce - his form finally catches up with him (doubt it though)
Broadbent - good game son but your time will come later

I personally believe what Cassisi is saying is just a beat up and the only change will be Chaplin in and Lower out. Lower is unlucky because I thought he did well.

Wont be happy if;

Salter
Davenport
Broadbent

Are dropped. I dont think Shaun should be back, neither Hamish or Thomas. Give them a go in the SANFL.

+1

Add Senir Burgoyne to the list of people who need to find form/confidence at sanfl level & needs at least 2 more weeks minimum.

Would like to see us take no risk on suspect/injured/unfit players this week. If in doubt then leave the player out & look at bringing them in against hawthron

If Shaun comes in to the team this week, bank on Pearce playing well.

thats a very good point
its sad to think that first game back from injury hes gunna have it tough with a tag from shirley
oh wait....shirley.....nvm......

some of the youngsters will have to make room though
stewart, broadbent and lower are all on the chopping block atm to make room for hartlett, burgs and possibly the other burgs

And watch all the bad habits return eg lack of defensive pressure, blocking etc etc.

I would expect Pearce to remain... I think Chocco likes the idea of blitzing the Crows with speed and it has worked well in recent years.

I would expect Lower to be dropped for JB.

Hartlett a smokey for someone like Stewart... unlucky yes as he played well... but lets face it Hartlett has more class. I think Chocco would like to see Hartlett play against the Crows 'young guns' who have been receiving a lot of press of late.

IMO

Chappy for Thurstans
JB for Lower
Hartlett for Stewart

I think they would definitely have their hands full trying to tag Pearce, JB and probably Rodan (given how much drive we get out of him). My main concern would be defensively stopping them the other way... Cassisi with more of a lock down role, Kornes and Davenport all given defensive roles.

Also a bit concerned about not having Motlop up forward... he (and other indeginous forwards) often cause them plenty of headaches. Then again Ebert and Gray are finding some form.

I may live in a special shoe box that others don't live in, but I dont' really care if someone has better ability or not eg hartlett for stewart, Stewart has done nothing wrong to be dropped.

This is part of our problems with our current culture. People get back in easy, like Shaun being mentioned, crazy. These guys have earnt their spot and should deserve to keep it, these guys go back the SANFL and wait.

This is all crap - honestly, we won the showdowns late in 2006 and 2008 with teams that had a plethora of desperate young, unproven players (Nick Lower played in both wins) because these players were prepared to work their butts off. By comparison, in 2007 when we were travelling great guns our glamourous, talent-rich, chest-puffing "front-liners" ran out of puff and didn't work hard enough to beat an opposition that quite simply should not have got near us.

I don't want to see ANY players returning from injury in the team this week and most definitely not Shaun Burgoyne without some SANFL form behind him first. Fancy going into a showdown with a player who almost certainly will have to play 60% or less game time.

Keep Stewart in. Hartlett has proven nothing as yet, other than he is injury prone at this stage of his career.

The only change should be Chaplin in. Unfortunately Nick Lower will miss.

Precisely. If you want your team to play consistent good footy then you should reward those who play consistent good footy and make those who are not in the team earn their spot by playing consistent good footy.

I agree with your whole rant as it's the same as what I said but mre passionate, BUT I don't like the Chaplin for Lower swap.

Chaplin needsto come in but it needs to be like for like in my opinion otherwise we are going to go back to last year and early this year with a top heavy defence.

Either Toby goes or Chad goes for Chaplin, I would love to see Chad dropped for one game to send a message, but it would never happen.

There is an old boys club mentaility at Port currently, at last weeks dropping went some way to reducing that mentaility, Choco can either keep it going and regain control or let this beast fester again IMO depending on his selections this week.

How is Chad's game on the weekend worthy of being dropped? He went back to CHB and was cutting off attacks almost like the Chad of old and we want him dropped? I agree that keeping underperforming senior players in the side for too long is a problem, but dropping performing senior players for absolutely no reason would be a bigger one.

That's a bit harsh - the game in late 07' (which is the one you're referring to) was when Brogan went down in the warm up and Choco spent the 2nd half emptying our forward line.

I'm a bit worried choco will recall Peter and Carr and bring in Thomas and Shaun at the expense of Stewart, Lower, Broadbent and Salter and we will be transport back to the 05' Semi Final.

Someone wanted Chad dropped?

Is Tommy Logan completely out of everyone's thoughts now? From just flicking through this thread I dont see him mentioned. He had a nasty flu but Glenelg had not been told he was headed back our way this week unlike the early info about Carr and Sal a few weeks back. Do you think Tom will be playing at the Bay v the Dogs this week?

From what i've heard his place in the team (when he's fit) isn't as secure as it was say a month to 6 weeks ago. I personally would think that with Broadbent impressing on the weekend Logan is a good chance to resume through the Bays.
