I'm still bullish about us but even if TK is right and this year turns out to be a flop we will probably end up with two top ten draft picks and two in the 20's. We're well set up to reload our list and go again, biggest worries would be the age of some of our older players and Kozzy leaving.
Probably is we are too good to get a top 10 pick, I still think we play finals as of right now we are a 10th to 5th team although with the talent we have even with a shit game plan we still beat most sides. Just don't see us beating the best.

Pushing players out never gets you much return. We'd only be doing that to free up cap space. If a club did start sniffing for one of those guys I'd be spruiking them like a used car salesman though.
Are those players hungry to be the best or are they running around knowing they get a game. Dont look like a team with players on the edge.

  • Hibberd will come back in for McVee, had 39 touches and looked sharp in the VFL
  • Van Rooyen did take ruck duties when Schache went down so this may indicate he gets a game?
  • Schache concussed in the VFL so that rules him out as the 2nd Ruck option

In - May, Hibberd, Van Rooyen, Jordan (Sub)
Out - Gawn, Tomlinson, McVee, Melksham (Sub)

B - River, May, Hibberd
HB - Lever, Petty, Brayshaw
C - Hunter, Oliver, Langdon
HF - Spargo, McDonald, Chandler
F- Fritsch, Brown, ANB
Ruck - Grundy, Viney, Petracca
Int - Sparrow, Harmes, Bowey, Van Rooyen
23rd - Jordan

How quickly we revert to early 2010s diasasterism!

Mid point of the season is the time to be working out if it’s a truly dire situation vs. round 2 was just a bump in the road. Geelong weren’t looking flash half way through last year. Richmond he had a couple of premiership years where they started slowly.

There is absolutely work to do on getting the midfield connection and balance better.

I don’t think the plan was to have Viney in the midfield as much as he was against Brisbane, but Pickett’s suspension messed that up. Harmes’ mediocre form excaserbated it.

It certainly wasn’t the plan to lose Gawn in the first few minutes of the game. I don’t care what anyone says, you can’t compensate for losing a player that influential when you know they will miss mid week, let alone having them get injured very early in game.

The coaches have a full week to work out how to approach Sydney with no Gawn. I’d be “happy” with a loss if the midfield was functioning better at clearance - even if that means they go a bit more conservative at clearance to protect against quality clearances from the opposition.

It may just be with no Gawn and Pickett (and potentially May still) that Sydney are just a better team than Melbourne.

OUT: 1 xTomlinson/Petty (depending on Petty's fitness), Gawn (injured), Harmes, Melksham
IN: May, van Rooyen, Jordon, Laurie

Joel Smith, Dunstan or Sestan for the sub (as much as I'd hate to give someone sub in their first game). All I know is I don't particularly want to see Melk in the 22 again. As tac sub for a handful of minutes in round 1 he was fine, but in case of injury he's a liability.

EDIT: Maybe Hames demoted to tac sub?
Sestan had a nice cameo game in the VFL but he’s miles off a senior game. Not AFL level fit by a long way yet.

I would never play Dunstan as a sub. He’s a contested grinder who accumulates. Only get value from him if he’s on from the start, and probably only if one of the main onballers is out injured. He has very limited versatility.

Jordon and J.Smith at least have some versatility so one of them makes sense as the tactical sub for mine.

If Melbourne don’t bring Hibberd in and Papley gets off the leash it would be a shocking call. Hobberd won’t play that loose sweeper role he did in the VFL. But Hibberd must come in as he knows every trick there is as a defender. Then at least then if Papley towels up Hibberd nobody will be left wondering “What if Hibberd played?” which is what will happen if McVee gets towelled up.

Got no issue with us dropping blokes and running some new blood through the side.

Opportunities were there to trade Salem, Harmes, Viney etc as mentioned, easy opportunity to get better.
Trading away the VC would be a terrible idea for club culture

Harmes would get us what? an early third round pick maybe

Salem could be the one with value but even then I couldn't see him netting anything more than a pick in the 20's

Goody does. The * happened to the bloke who ruthlessly dropped Melk Jones and Jetta from the flag side.

i might be wrong but it honestly felt to me like when Goodwin was in the gun at the start of 2021 and they'd brought in new coaches with fresh eyes to support him, that he was forced to give up a bit of control at the selection table.
then after winning the premiership it looked like Goodwin got a bit of that power back and got his way again with some very uninspiring decisions made throughout last year.
anyway i guess we'll find out this week if anything has changed at selection, off the back of a very poor performance and with a few Casey players putting their hand up.

Still pretty fresh to BigFooty so still learning what's sarcasm and what's not, but FMD you blokes jump off quick hey...
Think the discussion has been pretty balanced tbh.

Who would be your changes for this week?
None of my changes are realistic probably
JVR for Gawn
Melk for Laurie

If May is fit he's in, personally I'd drop Petty for him but I know it'll be Tommo.

I'd drop Viney and Harmes. Viney to find touch in the 2s and not get it in the middle of playing 2 top 4 competitors. Harmes out because Sparrow maybe stepped up.
Hibberd in, move Rivers to the middle

It's tough though because we have no dominant young mids ready to come in. Looking at the 2s it's Pig, Jordan, Dunstan etc dominant again.

McDonald/Brown combo can't last if they can't ruck, can't mark. On notice.

Is that enough changes? **** it play with 21

If Oliver wants to play like a * wit though none of it matters. He can make blokes like AnB look good or he can bomb it 50m and completely torch them
Oliver should go back to never kicking the ball. Just have our other guys waiting 5m away from the contest for the hand off.

Oliver has developed from being flat footed and a bit slow, to now he actually has good acceleration and leg speed.

But he rushes so many kicks like he’s just about to get mowed down.

Unless it’s coach’s instruction to blast long? I don’t mind long hack kicks if it’s after centre bounce clearance and 6-6-6 is still in place. But it’s crazy when opponents have had time to setup their backline.

Or when we push our half forwards up and then be bombs it over them to brown or Tmac 3-1. It's ****ing infuriating

Viney might be the worst of all of them, I reckon he legit rates himself as a good kick. Tries to pull off passes well above his skill level, he cant even do the basic.

Eg: How the **** do you miss ANB on the lead there as an AFL player, embarrassing 1:45

This is where Viney makes things worse, as he needs to play that role rather than Oliver

Vineys a shit footballer. Was watching the kozzie goal to beat Carlton on the siren and Viney nearly costs us missing a 20m kick to ANB who's out by himself directly in front with 40 odd seconds to go. He's like what 27? He's not getting any better he's a liability in a side that doesn't need him
