Weather is going to be the least of our concerns. I hope people are not expecting a competitive scoreboard!!

We just got completely owned by GWS ... at home.

Well in round 1 the wooden spoon side played a grand finalist and beat them. It all depends on how Crows go into this game. Unlikely we'll win but not impossible. Nobody can believe these massive afl upsets until they actually happen.

I agree with this for the most part, but I do not see how/why expecting players themselves to take responsibility for their own peak fitness and optimal weight is "simplistic". They're well-advised by dietitians and fitness gurus, but what they eat and how fit they get is ultimately up to them.
At a lower level, Fog's stand-and-shrug-off-tacklers default tactic works, but not at AFL level. Oppo defenders are better than he's expected. His defensive efforts once we lose possession are weak, but he's not the only one.
The single best thing I've seen him do is to know when and where to make a lead, take the grab (if the delivery is good) and pot good goals from well out.
If that's what he does best, the Crows can only pick him when our mids are fit and on song, unless he improves his fitness and the range of things he can do well.

Fogs a pretty powerful unit, and well and truly could have that as a weapon, especially against the smaller players, though he needs to get his hands free more often. He's also one of the better KPFs in the league when it comes to defensive work throughout 2020, however that's more to do with the bar being set really low (i.e. the best KPFs are the defensive equivalent of a below-average small). Still they're minor issues with a proper structure (and not this bullshit 4 tall structure we've opted for everytime we've played Fog).

See that's the thing. You could pick Fogarty to do that now (and he could have two years ago, he's been fit enough). You just need to drop Himmelberg, Frampton, Jenkins or Lynch, depending on how much you value a ruck/FF. Both require a tweak to our structure, but at the core, it's a very easy decisions to make if you are even entertaining the idea that Fog is Tex replacement. That answer is worth a lot more to this club than all four players I listed as it gives you a much clearer picture of where your next generation is at.

Fog really had two issues throughout his career. A) he had the misfortune of being drafted by us at a time that a large portion of his formative years coincided with us being a cheaply ran shitshow and B) he seemingly lacks a plan B to round out his game (and the lack of pace really hurts here). We've done most of the damage though, seeing our entire plan for developing Fog was just hide in the bushes and pray it all works out. Even fitness and diet is on the club, as doing the bare minimum from the club should have you as AFL fit. If they're required to do more to get to a base level, then you need to sack your staff yesterday.

The only good is we're beginning to come out of that phase now (with some relapses), the only question is there still time to rectify it, or is it too little too late?

Yep. An upset is when the results go completely against expectations. I was talking about expectations.

The players I think - in order - are on the chopping block to be omitted now or in coming weeks based on recent form, long-term potential and structure (but not weekly oppo match-ups):
  • Rowe
  • Mackay
  • Himmelberg
  • McAdam
  • McPherson
  • Kelly
  • Hately
  • Berry
I think we have to see a minimum of three (ideally 4-5) of those blokes out this week to (i) keep/build some selection integrity and (ii) move/inch closer to what should be our medium to long-term line-up.

I'd actually have Mackay at the top of that list, even though he was one of our better players against GWS.

Mackay is clearly a "break glass in emergency" player now, primarily providing coverage for our small defenders. If we get Brown and/or Hamill back this week, then Mackay will probably be the first player omitted.

Having said that, I would hope to see him named as the sub.

I wouldn't argue with that too much...my algorithm was:
  • Rowe: terrible current form + limited long-term potential ----> #1
  • Mackay: good last start + no long-term potential ----> #2

"Tom Lynch was match fit"

Could we have handled this situation any worse?
We could have added Burton and Pyke to the press conference to explain it?? That would have been worse.

Honestly, everytime you think the club takes a step forward, you see that the club is actually still a sh!tshow run by morons. It is genuinely difficult to be this incompetent so regularly.

What if we're trying to tank by leaving senior players out.... need to do it in a way that seems legitimate in order to avoid it coming back to bite us..... in this case legitimate mismanagement of an injury

Lose by a little or a lot, I want us to be physical. This can't be game 3 out of 8 where we roll over and lose by 8 goals. I want us to target one or two of their guys. If this game or the next 6 come down to talent we are screwed.

The sub is absolutely the spot for semi-fit aging players who you're trying not to invest game time in.

The Lynch gamble was a bloody great idea. The worst thing would be a player we're trying to develop or get in form losing an entire week stuck on the pine.

And Sloane, Hamill & Brown all confirmed in. McPherson has to be gone. Wonder who the other two outs will be.
Fogarty as well, according to the press conference.

Sloane, Hamill, Brown and Fogarty for McPherson, Mackay, Himmelburg and one of the smaller forwards, I reckon.
