As every post normally is this is just some of my random thoughts and opinions of mine from the game and how it will play out with the derby.
-Treacy did not get beaten in any of the contests he was in, never out-marked or manoeuvred, applied pressure when the ball hit the deck and finally he always had the attention of a defender. He MUST stay in! Just like when we had no tall forwards we sent Darcy down into the forward line, his main goal was just to bring the ball to ground, it wasn't to kick bags as we knew that would a bit of an ask, so just compete and we were happy. Can we please apply that to Treacy? The opportunities will come for him and watching him lay Ziebell out was exactly what I want to see him doing to Hurn and Shephard and any other idiot who wants to stand in the hole.
-Our pressure and retention of the ball in our forward 50 was average and I suspect it was one of the things JLo was not happy with, they walked it out of their backline and through the centre a few too many times and we were lucky it was North and they couldn't punish us. That does point to dropping a tall but it wasn't happening all game so I think the balance was there in the team, just some players weren't putting in 100% in their role. I would almost be shuffling the cards a little as I think Freddy's pressure and tackling was off and Crowden could do it a bit better with a bit more goal sense. So Crowden less time in the middle and more filing through the forward line more with Freddy pushing up the wings in the rotations with Aish going inside more often.
-Cox out and Kennedy coming back in is a bit of a nightmare as we lose a great aerial interceptor. Logue to Kennedy as the big match-up, Hughes to Darling as he has done many times serviceably and I think Luke Ryan will have to go to Allen. Potential for Ryan to swap with Hughes if the match ups aren't working. Conca to Cripps and Chapman to play the interceptor (which was one of his strengths as he was drafted). Would be nice to have Ryan freed up but think he is our next best KPD even though he's not even 190cm.
10 derbies is a row is bloody embarrassing, if there is no crowd this week my expectation is a win from the boys. They will be fired up for sure but being fired up doesn't mean their midfield suddenly becomes good. They will bring a lot more effort than what they showed but if we can trust big Hodor to nullify Natanui and push forward from him every contest (with Lobb being the kick behind the play) we should be able to punish them. I think Darcy's form is tracking beautifully and seeing him start to realise what he can do with his size, this game looms a great chance for him to show the rest of the comp.
EDIT- Forgot the changes! I think it will be a very uninspiring Cox for Watson swap, with no WAFL games played I don't think Longmuir will bring in any of the maybes like Sturt/Henry/Tucker.
