I haven't felt this bullish about our finals chances since after the Collingwood, Gold Coast and North Melbourne games
To be fair, we've now beaten 4 of the teams currently in the top-8. When was the last time we did that? I just wish we hadn't also lost to 3 of the teams in the bottom 10 (including the teams currently ranked 14th & 15th).

The one thing you can skimp on in AFL is your 2nd and 3rd tall defenders.

We've seen coaches like Roos and Lyon turn some pretty average talls into handy role players.

Luke Thompson and Andy Otten are no Matthew Scarletts admittedly but neither are Grundy, Dawson, Lonergan, Richards...
Grundy and Lonergan are quality, Richards has been AA and Dawson.....yes he is terrible.

Think how good it was in 08 when Bock and Rutten toweled up a red hot Franklin and Roughie at AAMI. I think having such a rich history of quality defenders has made us take them for granted.

We need pace! Skillful mids! Outside run!

What's so difficult?

Mackay is unable to break a tackle, beat an opponent, evade anyone, get out of a tight space...

Early days on Cameron but he seems to do this stuff for fun.
Your right Mackay isn't a great inside player but he has pace, great skills and outside run which is what you are saying we should target in the draft. He also tackles as well as any other outside mid I have seen.

I agree we need more outside run but I wouldn't be getting rid of one of the few who currently do it well.

Those expecting 3 or 4 changes will be disappointed. Rutten in for Thompson for mine. Not that Luke did anything wrong, it's just about matching up with their three big forwards.

Would just love us to settle Grigg into Reilly's position...

Reckon he is the sort of player that would enjoy being given a proper role, tough as nails and his sweet left foot hitting targets would be a welcome change :thumbsu:

Of Course Hendo at some point is going to be a handy addition to but would love him up on the wing.
Grigg is even slower than Rielly. Has he ever played in defense?

Is Charlie Cameron ready to come back this week, or does he need 72 years in the SANFL?
I would lean towards the 72 years as he is a first year player (rookie upgrade) and has been out injured for the past 3 weeks. They will give him at least 1 game in the SANFL before bringing him back.

I think he is listed as a test so you would assume would play this week or next in the SANFL.

Out: Porps, Reilly
In: Mackay, Rutten

Over the following three weeks:
Out: L.Thompson, Pods, Jaensch
In: Henderson, Kerredge, Laird

I think Cameron will have to earn his spot back through the SANFL.

That will mean Hartigan, L.Thompson, Reilly, Jaensch, CEY, M.Crouch, Porps, Cameron and Pods putting pressure on from underneath across all lines.

Am I missing anyone?

Yeah, I just mentioned it in one of the other threads, our win-loss ratio against sides above us (Those in the top 8) and those below us (10-18) is 50-50 for both groups. We're really not that far off of the pace in terms of what we are capable of if we play somewhere close to our best footy, the unfortunate part is that we have been utterly incapable of producing close to our best footy on a regular basis.

The frustrating thing for us fans is that we don't know whether to get excited about the prospect of finals or the prospect of a high draft pick, as with every week we seem to be oscillating between the two.

People want to rest players this week, quite frankly I'd rather throw everything at GWS, ensure we break our "rollercoaster" form and then rest them for the Hawthorn game, a game we're unlikely to win anyway, rather than potentially take GWS lightly and in doing so drop a "should win" game and then expend all of our energy losing a game we were unlikely to win in the first place.

Our focus at this stage needs to be winning 13 games. A win against Hawthorn is just as valuable as a win against GWS and no where near as valuable as a win against North Melbourne or Collingwood who we have coming up, these are the proverbial "8 point games". I would hate to see us expend a whole heap of energy beating Hawthorn, only to drop a game against GWS or even worse a side who we're actually vying against for a top 8 position.

WOW just can't believe the lack of footy nous .....and understanding of team structures

The fact that peoples judgement of players changes from one game to the next astounds me

Want a guarantee ........and quote me ...once Reilly retires ALL REILLY HATERS WILL THEN FOCUS ON THE NEW "DUMB" FOOTBALLER ....JAENSCH!!!
difference is jaensch has pace and isnt an airhead with the indecisiveness of an idiot like reilly

I can't see Jaensch being dropped as he is playing well and is important to our structure. His work coming out of the back line has been terrific.
Don't ask me how we fit everyone that deserves a game into the 22, because I simply have no idea. Great problem for the selection committee to have.

Ball in hand he is good but he gets burnt way to often for me. He had 3 goals kicked on him in the last quarter of the Essendon game that just came from bombs inside 50 to no ones real advantage. It was just his opponetent beating him in a 50/50 contest and kicking the goal. He was one our better player in the showdown though. I wouldn't mind seeing him played off half forward and either martin or Lyons come out when everyone is available.

No

Cameron is contracted until the end of the 2015, but the Herald Sun understands Cameron will decide at the end of the season if he stays at GWS or seeks a move home to Victoria.

Whilst the wording is technically correct, I don't see how moving to a Melbourne based club can be considered 'going home' for someone who hails from the country town of Dartmoor. No doubt the person who wrote that is just trying to attract the interest of Melbourne readers.

I admire your loyalty but there comes a time when you have to concede defeat. If playing Truck instead of Hartigan or LT is the difference between winning or losing then we are absolutely no chance of making the finals.

Unless you can guarantee me that we have already signed Frawley then starting our search for a second key defender in round one next season is absolutely crazy
Nothing to do with loyalty - truck is our 2nd best kpp defender. Comfortably in our best 22 if the opposition have a big forward.

Whilst we are still a decent chance of playing finals he plays.

Any thought that Hartigan or l Thompson are currently better kpp is fanciful at best

Reilly certainly is not an airhead .......but he does mix bad decisions with often excellent play which divides peoples opinions of him.

Jeansch until this year was as short a odds to be delisted that you could get .....only surpassed by Luke Thompson :D

Jaensch only needs a few "blonde" moments to be the automatic replacement for Reilly who replaced Dogga

yep ...add those 2 losses to the win column and we're vying for top 4

We could win the last 9 games in a row and go on to win the flag, but we won't.

Yes, we have beaten Collingwood, Kangaroos and Poort in front of our 50,000 fans and we are a chance to beat Hawthorn but this season is all about preparing us to make a decent run at a top 4 position next year.

Is it better to pump another 8 games into Reilly, Porps, Truck and JPod and finish 7th or 8th, or developing our KIDS?
You do understand we are 9th - 1 game out of finals contention.

Sure it is highly doubtful we will win a flag from outside the top 4 but it is piss poor culture to tank when you have decent show at the finals.

The best experience the "kids" could get is finals experience.

Porps & Reilly are no longer best 22 & only playing til injured players return.

Both truck & pods are best 22 though.

Sorry but you're not allowed to talk sense on this forum ;)

As a fan, I will never ever tolerate my club tanking. EVER!. The reason is that the draft is a lottery and sometimes the 5th player selected is just as good as the first. Dangerfield was 10th and is an absolute gun. Sloane was in the 40s. Clubs who tank just have shite cultures!

Jaensch is not composed under pressure & i worry seeing how he will perform in finals

 ......hell didn't see one person complaining, supporting or pushing L.Thompsons case for the last year and half

Now he's in our best 22 .......oh FFS

He'll be delisted years end & maybe we may get a trade for him but not holding my breath

Pods is only best 22 if you you think that it's impossible for us to win games of football without playing 3 tall forwards. I think we'd have better results swapping the 3rd tall out for a small. I'd rather another have another ball-getting midfielder rotating through the fwd line.

Trucks getting mighty close to being borderline 22 though ..........he really has slowed and the big tall forwards are getting him now
