I have been impressed with CEY this year, need to persist with him. Greenwood is a definite 22.

I'm pretty sure CEY will keep his spot all the way up to when Brad Crouch gets fit. And even then Brad will need to kick him out of his spot. Greenwood getting this experience and gametime is invaluable, still think he's another preseason off having the tank to run out games super strong, but this many midfield minutes will only help him!

I think this week we keep both CEY and Greenwood in.

Tex, Sloane and Knight for Fog, Milera and Atkins would be my changes after watching replay.
Not sure Atkins for Knight is such a good idea this week. Rat was quiet last week I agree, but he just came off 3 weeks of very solid games including what could only be described as the perfect wingers game against the Swans. And our outside running game is finally starting to look good, so i'm hesitant to go messing with the formula.

I love the pressure Knight brings when fit, but if he's getting managed after 2 games in the forward line then i'm worried he's not up to scratch in his fitness, and we don't need another soft tissue injury.

Is he still our best player with a tag though? Teams have worked him out and he doesn’t have an answer.

He's certainly not one of our better performed players when tagged. It's highly likely that we'd gain overall by keeping CEY at the stoppages and pushing Sloane to mostly outside rotations where tagging him will be harder.

So is Sloane, B Crouch, M Crouch and Greenwood, but they’re all clear best 22 players, and we proved last year that we’re fine in selecting that mix.

CEY is currently doing an excellent job of holding down Brad’s spot and is a certainty to stay in.

As for the talk on this board of Atkins potentially being dropped over Gallucci, that quite simply isn’t happening.

Assuming no further injuries take place between now and Thursday (not a hugely safe assumption atm lol), AND Tex and Sloane are both passed fit, there are only 2 possibilities for selection.

1)
Out: Fogarty, Milera, Gallucci
In: Tex, Knight, Sloane

Or

2)
Out: Fogarty, Milera
In: Tex, Sloane

If an another injury does occur, that injured player going out likely gives Gallucci a reprieve, unless the player is a KPP, in which case Fogarty gets a reprieve, or if it’s Jacobs with an injury, O’Brien comes in.

ROB did a shoulder in the SANFL, not sure how bad, but it's certainly a part of the body you don't want hampered as a ruckman.

Maybe rest Knight further?

I want Gooch to stay in hence went Atkins.

Knight over Atkins all day every day and not even a second thought.

I have been and will remain a critic of Atkins until he shows more intensity and physical attack on the player when we don't have the ball.

Atkins is softer than a marshmallow.

Whilst I agree on Atkins, Knight doesn't get enough of the ball to make up for it.

Atkins hasn't played 3 solid games this season, let alone 3 in a row. His Sydney game was the only one worth writing about.
Collingwood: 28 disposals 1 goal
Swans: 24 disposals 3 goals
Suns: 28 disposals

2:1 kick to handball ratio, high meters gained... What else do you want from a wingman?

To earn those stats when the contest is on, rather than pad them heavily in the last quarter when the game is over

Knight can get the ball once in a game and that 1 touch will be better than Atkins getting 50 touches.

I've seen more than enough of Atkins so called elite leg - total myth......its like Hayleys comet comes around once in a hundred years.

I'm sick and tired on watching Atkins insipid half hearted attack on a player with the ball. He has zero intensity.

Most over rated player on our list.

Dmac cops heaps on this board, I've even been a critic, but Dmac will put his body on the line and will attack the physical contest when required. In the same situation you will find Atkins in the top row of the Riverbank stand.

What rubbish, Greenwood has been OK but not better than Cam. Also he is not what I'd call quick either.
Coaches disagree. Greenwood has 1 vote in the AFLCA award so far. CEY has no votes. Both have played all 7 matches. I will be very surprised if Greenwood doesn't add to his tally when the R7 votes are announced later today.

Greenwood is a quick thinker, CEY is decidedly not. Everything about CEY seems to happen in ruckman style slow motion, half a second off the pace needed to survive in the AFL pressure game.

And yet he rarely, if ever, gets caught with the ball. What you're actually seeing is a player that draws opponents to him prior to dishing off to a teammate. This creates more time and space for the recipient. Judging midfielders really isn't your bag, maybe stick to the peripheral roles.

I'm not going to start a Atkins vs Knight bi-thread. They play different roles. I'm just saying Atkins for all his faults (none of which i will argue against), has been playing his role this month. He's an attacking wingman, that's pretty much it. As soon as I came to grips with the fact that Pykey obviously give's specific roles to his players to make the team function best as a unit, watching things like Atkins lack of tackle pressure stopped irritating me as much. Its actually quite liberating and certainly sends me into far less hissy fits!

Same as people wanting DMAC to play like a QB instead of a linebreaker, or CEY not having enough breakaway speed out of the midfield. Its just not their roles in the side so getting angry about them not providing it is pointless!

Dropping Atkins is a popular fantasy around here. Personally, I think Atkins can be over-rated at times, but there's no way the selectors are going to drop him.

Atkins received AFLCA votes in both of the last 2 games, including a 7-vote game against Sydney. They're not going to drop him 2 games later.

I think it comes down to a choice between Gallucci & CEY.
  • Gallucci is younger, more highly rated, with considerably higher potential. He's also a 2nd year player, only 4 games into his AFL career, and playing a role which doesn't exactly lend itself to consistency.
  • CEY is older, more physically developed, and playing a solid & consistent role in the middle of the ground, where he's doing a great job of winning contested possessions and clearances. However, he's slow, has limited upside, and ultimately just a depth player who is doing his job to the best of his ability.
I think they'll opt to keep Gallucci in the team, for development reasons. At least while he continues to perform at his current level. That said, I won't be surprised or upset if it's Gallucci who is dropped instead of CEY. I still think they'll be omitting CEY though.

That's such simplistic thinking. Coaches give votes to only 5 players, including opposition players. CEY could have out-voted Greenwood in every other game and be comfortably ahead. Hell, the 1 vote that Hugh has might have been from the opposing coaching group. Really sloppy work there.

There is also a third option, which is leave Knight out.

I think Hugh admitted as much post game his tank still needs work but if he is only going to get better then he is going to be a gun.
