Just because Shaw is ahead of Butcher doesn't mean Butcher is done. Progression isn't linear. Look at Wines. In his second year he looks more composed than players who have had six years on an AFL list. But does that mean those six year players can't play?

Given that we are 1 maybe 2 tall defenders down, I think we might need to bring the extra height in down forward to force at least one of Carlisle or Hurley to defend. If one or both are allowed to play forward, we could be stretched pretty thin.

Our small forwards in Monfries, Wingard and Gray have not kicked a goal between them for the last two weeks. None.
Time to stop funking around with them as midfielders and defensive forwards and set them free in the forward lines.

I think it might have been against Essendon in the pre season, but we had Westhoff, Young and Butcher all in the forward line and it looked like we had gone back a few thousand years and grabbed 3 cavemen and chucked them onto the field. I want to see that again.

Seriously though, bring back Young and give Shaw just rewards for his efforts in the SANFL.

Out: Carlile, Trengove, S Gray, Mitchell
In: Clurey, Cassisi, Young, Butcher/Shaw

Match ups:
Hombsch - Daniher
Clurey - Carlisle
Jonas - Ambrose
Impey - Colyer
Pittard - Melksham
Cassisi - Chapman

We definitely need another tall up forward the help bring the ball to ground if needed. We are just bombing it down the throats of the defenders who just double team Schulz.

Outs- trengove, gray, Mitchell and Carlile if injured.

Ins- Clurey, young, Shaw, oshea. Oshea only if carlile is ruled out.

I nearly kept Mitchell in as he got to many more contests in the 2nd half than half our other midfielders. But he just lacks some polish and is fumbling the ball too much.

I'm really hoping Shaw gets a run. Leave him in the goal squat and have Schulz play higher up the ground dragging a player away and creating some space which we have lacked up forward.

Would also like to get cassisi back but who else to drop? Prefer oshea for the 3rd tall defender and his run over cassisi.

In: Cassisi, Clurey, Shaw, Young
Out: Carlile (inj), S.Gray (omit), Mitchell (omit), Trengove (inj)

I didn't think Mitchell was poor, just think that Young is ahead of him. Am tempted to make Wingard or Hartlett sub.

How about a ****ing third tall. You look at our game from round 2 where we smashed the Crows and how having Butcher there as well meant we always had a lead up contest across half forward just to bring the ball to ground and then we had another big in the F50. We struggling without the extra option yesterday, too many times there was no one to kick to to make a contest and bring our smalls into it. Let's ****ing make the right changes this week:

Out: Mitchell, S Gray, Trengove, maybe Bobby :(

In: Young, Newts, O'Shea, Butch\Shaw

Sub: Newts

Get the ****ing structure right.

This week I'm thinking like this.

Now it's time for the easiest part of any coach's job. The cuts. Although I wasn't able to cut everyone I wanted to, I have cut a lot of you. Mitchell is cut. Trengove is cut. Carlile, you're gone. Sam Gray, I like your hustle ... That's why it was so hard to cut you.

Congratulations, the rest of you made the team!

Except you, you and you.

I think we have become way too dependant on Robbie Gray. Stop him and we r in big trouble around the packs. Second half showed this way too clearly

Massive overstatement. Our midfield has been working fine all year with Robbie spending long periods forward.

Can just as easily say the crows are too dependent on Dangerfield, or Geelong are too dependent on Selwood. It's a silly argument.

Detest? Cowardice? Moronicism? These are disgraceful terms. Do you call yourself a supporter or are you just a fool?
Mitchell is not our best player, but he tried hard and is coming along reasonably well for a guy with less than 20 games. Direct your anger at the experienced players who let us down badly today - Hartlett, Wingard, Ebert etc.

I get the anger if someone does not try but the whole reason Mitchell is in the side is because he is an example to the rest of the squad of what is expected in terms of effort.

Changes:
Out subject to injuries: Trengove (inj), Carlisle (inj), S. Gray and Mitchell (yes his effort is very good however fumbles way too much)
Ins: Clurey, O'Shea both tall defenders and in form then Young and Shaw.
Is Shaw too early, possibly however if he has 3 shots at goal as opposed to Butch he will hit the score board and he has a) been in pretty good form and b) been kicking goals..6,3,3.
The only other consideration is possibly Dom but for whom I'm not sure.

IN: no tall forwards

This has to be my one gripe with Ken - he's stubborn when it comes to picking talls for some reason.
Is he? I actually thought the opposite, he loves to play the extra Tall when fit/form allows him.to.

When? Trengove was out a while last year and he didn't select a tall to replace him (Hombsch) for about 4-5 rounds. He's persisted with 2 tall forwards for the majority of the time he's been here too.

Out: Trengove, Carlisle, S Gray
In: Shaw, Clurey, Young

Mitchell as sub again, I don't mind him terribly in that role and the reality is if we bring in another player they get to be sub. Young provides the extra clearance work.
Shaw seems to me to be that annoying kind of player that knows how to get on the scoreboard, even if they aren't having massive impact. His 12 goals in 3 games haven't come in games where the magpies have been flying, they have struggled all 3.
We still lack that extra tall defender like Trengove in this scenario, but Westhoff will be needed to ruck relieve so another key forward has to be brought in.

Is he? I actually thought the opposite, he loves to play the extra Tall when fit/form allows him.to.
More often then not since he's been coach we've played 1 ruck, 3 tall backs, 2 tall forwards, one of which is Westhoff as an ultra-tall utility able to play everywhere.

Other sides usually line up with either 3 tall backs, 2 tall forwards, a ruck and a ruck/forward or 3 tall backs, 3 tall forwards and a ruck. Some have even played 8 talls.

I don't think we can carry 8 talls, even with Westhoff as not a conventional KPP, but given Westhoff isn't a conventional KPP we can play 3 tall backs, 2 tall forwards a ruck and Westhoff and still have at least as many runners as the opposition - and still usually will have one more (before taking into account how most of our forwards can rotate through the guts).

Ken's anti 3-tall policy up forward, although we'd never go in, unless injury forced it, with only 2 tall backs, is the one real frustration I have with his coaching.

I think the exact opposite. When Trengove went down last year it took 6 weeks to bring Hombsch in. Then we dropped Hombsch when Trengove was back. We've played 3 tall forwards in 10 of 38 games, and 2 ruckman in 9 of 38 games. We like to play small
