We lost two key defenders in the first half, so yes, it was tough from that point and makes the win feel better.

Here’s a couple of points.
When Naughton went out of forward line, our forward line looked better in that there was more space, and Naughton wasn’t trying to ‘steal’ the ball off everyone. Now this is huge for mine. In the first quarter, a great ball got kicked into the goalsquare that had Jamarra’s name all over but guess who spoiled him? Our most selfish forward. Naughton. He does this quite regularly if you watch our games, Lobb and Jamarra had some chemistry I felt, even Weightman had more freedom to fly for marks and get on leads.

This is what I propose for our next game. Whether the ‘clown box’ of coaches we have go with it, I don’t know. Naughton stays back with Keith and Gardner. Maybe Cleary or Crozier replaces Duryea as he looks cooked. Sweet plays ruck, which lets English help Lobb and Jamarra forward with Cody/West/Scott/Hannan as smalls. West needs a run in the middle too. What do you all think?
Cmon Tons 17.26 mins into the Kayo recording if you want to take another loook.

In what world is that Marras ball running back towards goal with the ball coming over his head, over Naughty standing literally directly under it in the square facing the ball.

Blaming Naughty for that is genuinely insane

I sat up on level 2 for the first time, I’m normally on the ground. What stood out:
We go wide along the wings too much, the corridor kick was there we just don’t take it.
Too many players dont hit the first lead by the forwards, happened to JUH and Lobb a few times, good sides hit up
Naughton kicked too first half but his reluctance to lead up to the ball carrier stands out, prefers to hand up kick it long approach.
Bailey Smith runs hard, yet it’s only one way, such a shame has the potential to be so much more, has Libba and Bont to look up to yet seems happy to be and outside runner who let the team down when we need him to run hard the other way.
We need to spread make our possessions count, JJ and Richards will help with this.

Agreed, this is fairly accurate. He is averaging pretty much career lows in every area, so definitely isn’t having a good season and can perform better. He has some reasons for that, the injury in preseason and not getting surgery, then getting surgery after round 1, then getting rushed back from surgery and then for some reason long stints on the wing.

I’ve never been a big Lobb guy, think my posting reflects that. He is pretty much that same 10 touch, 10 hitout, 1 goal game. Not particularly influential but playing a role and then he has the odd 4 goal game where he is a big factor. I’m not sure at what point he started being considered as one of the best ruck/forwards in the game, I don’t see him as that, but it’s far better than the alternatives we were running with last season.
His numbers are down on his career average this season. However, he hasn't had to play as part of a 3 and at a ludicrous 4 man tall forward set up. Given the lack of cohesion we've seen from this group all season and their reduced output. It's not really a surprise that his numbers have dipped a bit. However, you're spot on. I'll take that dip over watching any of the palookas we've been forced to run as second ruck for years any day of the week.

Cannot agree with this more.

Especially regarding hitting up our forwards. Honour the leads

Get Naugton moving play him CHF

He does it all the time. Jamarra/Naughton, Naughton/Lobb, Naughton/Weightman, if it’s a coaching thing, then we need to piss Spangher off

His entire GWS career was as the third tall, other than his last year where it looked like he rucked alone a bit. His numbers where understandably far better when he got to be the main man at Freo.

I just think he is down on form a little, there are a lot of reasons for that and a few that he can’t control and he is not the first player who hasn’t dominated straight off the bat at a new club. I would be surprised if he isn’t much better post bye. He is averaging 2.5 marks a game and has taken 8 contested marks in 13 games. Not good enough numbers for someone of his size and ability. I’m backing those numbers to get closer to his career averages of 4 and 2 per game.

That every time we play North and it is their home game, our supporters still outnumber theirs. Yet we lose the Good Friday game. Why have you got your knickers in a knot about an innocuous question?
My apologies, I guess I was talking about the fact they have one of the smallest crowds in the AFL. Therefore Giants and GC would have as many fans at games lol

Rough watch but overcame some adversity to get the win. Massive improvement needed if we want do anything of significance this year.

Is anyone aware of the myotherapist situation?
I feel this has a big bearing on our performances week to week, but the media too scared to ask Beveridge.

A win at this time of the year is still 4 points. Was it great not even close but we have a great base to work from.

One thing that is clear we need to stop thinking the flea will ever be a traditional small forward. He is not. But he has most of Toby Greens attributes. It is how we should be thinking of him and how his role in the forward line should be developed. A really special player

Took my boys today, glad they got to see a win in person but that was everything that’s deflating about our current situation tbh. It is easier to see the good and bad being at the ground, and more obvious to me that our coaching is borderline atrocious.

1) Horrible defensive structure and game plan. Playing too high again, inconsistency in defensive positioning, some baffling decisions on kicks in incredibly dangerous areas leading to turnovers that directly lead to goals.

2) Naughton and Jamarra have no chemistry. They continually get in each other’s way and it cost at least one easy goal and probably a few other opportunities. How they can’t be coached out of this, or even realise themselves through simple conversations before and in game is honestly mind-blowing. Jones’s injury and Naughton being moved back ended up being very enlightening given how the forward line functioned after that.

3) The set-shot goal kicking is at red alert levels. There were at least five simple shots missed from basically right in front, and not one dogs fan around us believed any were going through. These guys need a circuit breaker of some sort because the simple misses are horrible, and frequently lead to opposition goals because of how s**t our defensive transition is.

4) It’s ludicrous to see where some players are being played at times. Macrae is lost playing up the ground like this, and there are instances where McNeil is around a stoppage and Macrae is languishing 30-40m ahead of the ball. Wtf are we doing here?

5) Got 5-6 goals up early in the last despite the above, and looked good for a 50 point win which would help percentage and go into the bye on a high. Then either cues go in the rack or something else happens and we end up stumbling to a 20 point win.

Predictably our talent gets us over the line with a great Cody game and another gem from the captain. Which will happen a few more times this year and we’ll sneak into the eight again. Some honourable loss in week one of finals and destined for middle of the road purgatory again.

I haven’t checked the “do you still have faith in Bevo” thread, but if anyone who was at that game still thinks he should coach us beyond this year I would be genuinely surprised. North were better organised, positioned themselves better and looked more structurally sound. That we had better players than them was the only reason we won the game. That’ll work against the bottom sides but not the top half of the ladder, which is why our record against good teams in recent times has been so woeful.

This is all very glass half empty after a win, I know. But it really solidified my view that this team is being let down by the very people who should be putting them in a position to succeed. Widespread change is absolutely required before some of the genuine top-end talent on this list are denied an opportunity to go deep in September in the coming years.

Smith is a high priority if we're to get to September and then progress.

He and Treloar have the speed in our midfield and that speed needs to be used defensively as much as offensively. Aside from 2 way running and the technical aspects of defence including positioning, effective tackling and blocking, the coaching panel need to find a way to get into his head to convince him that for our current team and its current midfield make-up, his commitment to defence and getting better at it is critical to our prospects. It's almost certainly more important than his offensive game given our make up.

For a club that’s been a rabble for a few years and have pretty much done nothing for the best part of the last 25 years, bloody hell do Norf have some mouthy fans.

The game went about as expected, glad to get the win but we make it so hard for ourselves every damned week. Same old story with no sign of change. Missing set shots, getting burnt out the back conceding cheap goals, defensive switches that end up in a long ball to a contested 1 on 1 where we are undersized, poor defensive half turnovers being punished by opponent accuracy and to cap it off tonight, a couple more injuries.

I really hope Bains or Grant just make the executive decision to get SOMEONE in as a specialist coach for goalkicking training next week with the bye. Some ex-players may still have some bias with the clubs they played for, but what I’d give for the club to get someone like Dunstall or Lloyd down for a few days…

Great post. Trealor was once thought of as a ball butcher and a one way runner. He is neither now. Would like to see him work with and Smith tale on board the importance of two way running which he is capable of and also just steadying before kicking and not rushing. Smith can fix this issue just needs the composure. His effort can not be questioned

They really hate the Dogs, likely going back the media hype surrounding us around 2015-16 while they were good but not great and generally light on for media coverage.

There are quite a few specialist kicking coaches including goal kicking, they are very good at what they do. Many players who were good at kicking were naturally good and could not coach or teach it.

I would sincerely hope we have reached out to a specialist kicking coach to work with the group

That's true and would be one avenue to explore. The thing with Smith is that he, along with Treloar, are the only 2 midfielders we have capable of closing the space on breaking opposition midfielders. It's simply a natural speed that they have, that the others don't. And as we progress, we are going to run into opposition midfielders and contenders with genuine speed. Port have cut us up twice and Melbourne once already.

It's something he (Smith) can do for the team and it's super important. If we progress and Smith is playing great defensive games, that contribution will be as valuable as any goal we kick. I hope he's a) aware of it and b) committed to it.

Tough crowd. 3 qtrs without our best KPD and a half with his most logical replacement.
When you have lost 3 on the trot and then lose your key defender early after starting slowly it is hard to turn it around.

We should have been able to, and we did.

Do we need to improve massively after the bye? Absolutely but 8 and 6 buys us the time to turn it around if we can and a win gives us the opportunity. A win is certainly better than the alternative

Didn't think any players were terrible today, got a hell of a lot more from the bottom 3 or 4 players than last week, so tick to the mc there. Hannan was surprisingly quite good I thought.

Our top 7 or 8 players are having a remarkably consistent year. They play well week in week out.

I was on level 2 today without beers for the first time this year. The ball comes in so quick to our backline and it is so open, tough gig being one of our defenders, we allow opposition teams such direct entries forward of stoppages under little pressure, whereas our forward entries are always sideways and slow and there about 20 players sitting in our fwd 50 every time. Thought naughton was terrible down back but that was probabky rust, geez our fwd line opened up more once he moved out. Would love to see them try him there for next few weeks to at least see how it goes.

I'm so over our goalkicking like everyone else. It's endemic now.

The club need to video Smith the full game and show him the footage compared to Bont. At the moment he is not interested in doing the defensive stuff. At one stage he was running towards defensive 50, north had two lose players streaming into forward 50, Smith saw and actually slowed his running. I can only assume he did this to show he couldn’t make it to the contest. This is a mindset thing he must overcome. He could have made it and spoiled if he ran to capacity. It’s not natural to him and will take a huge shift to change.

I have followed the dogs since 61 and was totally pissed today by a middled aged women who had a go at me for some negative comments early in the game I made about our goal kicking and the selection of Mitch Hannan. Basically saying do not come to the footy unless remaining upbeat about your team never talk negatively about your players.

I told her politely to turn around and watch the game. Yes, I was polite to her. The same woman was playing tetris on her phone in the 3rd and last quarter. I refrained from giving her a mouthful about supporting your team. Playing a game on your phone is disrespectful to your team.

My view of being a passionate supporter is to praise the good and be upset by the bad.

Strange how we can dominate the game, inside 50's have the best 3 on the ground Bont, Cody and ADZ against the second worst team in the comp and win by a meagre 21 points. Our lot this season of giving a lot of effort but so wasteful with our ball use and goalkicking. Oh, is saying this being a bad supporter?
