Traded Gary Ablett [traded to Geelong]

Geelong won't won't to give up pick 19 because it's classed as a 1st round pick and we're not in a good position with the supposed two in four-year rule. Staying at 19 and draft allows us to fulfill that criterion which doesn't seem all that important but it's still a bonus and give us more flexibility in the future.

Life moves on and especially with trade week ending this week hard decisions need to be made at a very hard time for the family. Its easy to say GC should just trade him but they have a football club to consider and need to get the value they deserve for a superstar still under contract for 2 years. Geelong need to pony up and get the deal done with the right compensation.

GC will need to change their request as no player wants to go there (fair enough as well). Maybe 2 first round picks or a first round and 2nd round. They do hold the upper hand in that they don't have to give geelong a free pass and can let ablett retire, so geelong need to give them a good deal - if they want a superstar of the game to once again play for them.

It wont be GC's fault if Ablett retires as I think its a terrible way to handle things by Ablett and his manager to threaten retirement if things don't go his way

Geelong don't have to do s**t. He wants to live in Geelong to be with his family, if he can play footy at Geelong he will, if he cant then he will retire. Gold Coast will get nothing for him, and in doing so they build on the perception that they don't look after their players. Looks like no one is the league is keen to join them this year, yet numerous players wanting to leave again. Something is amiss.

There is absolutely no chance in hell the cats are giving up a first round pick, let alone two first rounds, or a first and a second, to suggest it is absolute rubbish.

More than likely GCS won't use pick 37 so might as well give it up to get the Ablett done.
A straight swap for 19 or 22 ain't going to happen for a player that has 1-2 years of football left.
Suns are not going to just gift Ablett back to Geelong.
Ablett owes the Suns $ and Geelong will have to come to the table

Wells on radio this morning basically ruled out using 19 or 22 in any trade, including the Ablett deal. Taking both to the draft is what he's signalled. So conspiracy theories involving the AFL giving us that pick top get the deal done should be promptly put to bed.

This trade is more likely to be involving a fringe player and/or pick 35.

Geelong aren't going to give up more just because Ablett has been overpaid by GCS. The AFL runs GCS and will not have a scenario where Ablett isn't playing next season and he won't be playing at the Suns.

"I think we'd be holding on to that" leaves enough room for that to change to being included in a trade deal over the next 4 days.

Laughable that some think we SHOULD give up 19 or 22. * that.

This would also seem to confirm pretty clearly that we're out of the race for Stringer and Watts....

Agree. Wells wants these for the draft and they will be traded nowhere except maybe to get even better picks in the draft. If a deal with GCS can't be done without them, Gaz won't be at Geelong, simple as that.

I think Lang might be the best prospect. Although Lang is young, played well in the finals and has a lot of potential, so we still probably lose out on that trade. If we can get a decent pick for Lang, Geelong still would probably prefer to keep that pick over trading it for Ablett too. Overall it makes it hard to see where this will go.

Hopefully this Motlop conspiracy crap can be put to bed. Geelong were never going to use pick 21 for Ablett unless it involved a larger trade; us Geelong supported been telling people that for ages. Pick 19 certainly wasn’t either

I'm really surprised at the lack of want from the Cats fans to bring home a club champ.
If at the start of the trade period you asked fans "would you swap Motlop for Ablett?" I would have thought most would say "yes".

You'd be wrong. Some would have said yes, but I'd argue the majority would be against trading a 26 year old in his prime for a 34 year old Ablett with busted shoulders. Pick 19 or 22 won't be straight swapped for Ablett, Wells has already said as much. We'd be needing a pick back in the mid 20's if we parted with 22. Something that would points-wise value Ablett at around 50 or so.

Sure but for whatever reason the afl overpaid on Motlop. Neither player is worth pick 19. But now that has happened I imagine it opens up all sort of possibilities that didn’t exist before. But that doesn’t change Abletts worth.

I believe it was higher than originally expected because people were originally considering it as a three year deal and then it came out that it was 4 years.

Seems to be beyond media outlets to provide such realistic or informative commentary rather than going for cheap clicks by making up controversies though.

Sounds like Geelong just want everything their own way. Happy to lean on 'family reasons' to paint Gold Coast as the bad guy for not letting Ablett go home, but not willing to part with anything of value.

Gold Coast have picks 2, 21, 24, 26, 37 and 39. Geelong have 19, 22, 35 and 53. Why would Gold Coast want anything other than 19 or 22 or a player? Pick 35 would be their 5th in the draft, pick 53 their 7th. If Ablett isn't a priority for Geelong (as he appears not to be), then Gold Coast's negotiations with Geelong are going to follow that path. If he's only worth pick 53 then great, go and use pick 53 to get someone as good. It doesn't benefit Gold Coast one iota.

No one really knows the contract details or the compo formula.

AFL FA 101.

Also it stands out because band 2 is rare. Most FAs have been band 1 or 3.

Pick 19, has nothing to do with Ablett. The AFL love helping teams they are in bed with and clearly the cats are 1 of these. Disgracefully corrupt organisation is the AFL.

Just the facts of the matter. Geelong is a team who's traded picks and weakened their draft for a few years running. Ablett decided he wants to return to Geelong but that doesn't change the fact that we need to actually use some draft picks to get young players and it doesn't mean we should just stupidly burn our future for an older player.

This should be in the thread title now as it being repeated too many times. They want a player that's established, so far apart from the ambit claims of Cockatoo and Duncan we've had not 1 player they have enquired about say yes to moving to Queensland. Hence the stalemate.

So maybe we can stop with these fanciful suggestions of pick 19 or 22 which are overs for a 33yo. :thumbsu:

That's all well and good, as long as you don't pretend it's a one sided negotiation. The Cats are preoccupied with their draft position, sniffing around Stringer/Smith/Watts and then Ablett is down the list of priorities.

Gold Coast (and anyone else not connected with Geelong) don't give a s**t about Geelong's draft wants. If Geelong would rather keep 19, 22 and 35 for specific draft targets or general list rejuvenation that's their prerogative but it's not Gold Coast's job to work around Geelong after they've sorted out how many picks they want to take, whether they're bringing in Watts etc. - that's not how it works.
