So where is the outcry about the Lions also trialling starting positions and the larger goalsquare ?

Opposition supporters really are fascinated by us !!

They don't fear the Lions, but still have nightmares from our three-peat years !!

Was there even outcry when Hawthorn trialled the changes?

Brad Scott spruiking that Norf has become a destination club for elite players .

Two points Brad

1. When someone from outside the club says as much then others might think as much, self proclamation doesn't count.

2. Now stating the obvious but when an elite out of contract player actually lands at Arden St by choice then things might change.

At the moment Brad, Norf are just the person (PC term) that you date to make the ex jealous.

Quite a few other coaches have said and admitted they speak with Gil weekly about umpiring decision issues.

Sounded to me they were more jealous that Clarko may have got a latte or flat white out of the meeting.

They all have meetings. Only one coach has Gil reaching in to his own pocket to pay for the coffee.

FYI.

Article quoting Sam Mitchell pasted in below. He makes some sensible points. I am not sure I agree with him on all issues, but its good to hear him articulate some careful and thoughtful views, and pull the media up a little bit on their chosen narrative.

The Age – 20th of June

"Modern footy stands up well, says Sam Mitchell" (Sam McClure)

AFL great Sam Mitchell has warned against drastic rule changes for next season, declaring that constant debate over the state of the game is “a storm in a teacup”.

The four-time premiership player at Hawthorn, who is now an assistant coach at West Coast, believes talk surrounding the aesthetics of the game is mainly driven by the media and the “older generation”.

Mitchell says that it is up to senior figures in our game to change the narrative when it comes to the state of the game, instead of changing the game itself.

He believes it would be unjustified for league headquarters to be too reactionary to external pressure.

“I would challenge anyone who thinks the game is in a poor state to turn on a random game from a random era that they thought was the best of the game and see which one compares better,” Mitchell said on SEN.

“I think modern footy stands up pretty well and I think the one thing you say about the rules committee is they have made a lot of changes in recent years and sometimes they don’t know what (the rule changes) are going to do.

“An example of that might be the third man up. I think it’s probably increased congestion a little bit and it’s not something anyone would’ve forseen but because of that you can’t hit the ball out of the area because there’s only two people who can compete.

“I think rule changes are necessary but the research that needs to go into it is so significant. If you’re making them at the last minute because of media talk … that’s where the media plays such an important role in what people think of the game because that’s the way people listen and watch. If you look for things you’ll always find it.”

In the past fortnight, the AFL has used Hawthorn and Brisbane to conduct trials of some of the rules that have been suggested to the league’s game analysis committee.

Larger goal squares and players being able to run further without bouncing are some of the ideas trialled, while the significant change of starting positions at stoppages has also been looked at.

The AFL will continue to trial different rules for the remainder of the season, and Steve Hocking’s newly formed competition committee will then make recommendations to the commission.

But Mitchell says his preference is not to change the game that drastically just yet.

“I think the game usually works itself out pretty well,” he said.

“We were worried about flooding 10 years ago and now it’s become about the pressure that we’re worried about at the other end of the ground.

“I think coaches will continue to manipulate the way that the game’s played.

“I would like teams to be able to score 100 points on a reasonably regular basis, I think that’s the beauty of our game, but having said that there’s lots of people who want shorter games, which will bring scoring down.

“Always, the older generation get a bit frustrated because it’s not in the glory days of their old times … I think the challenge for us is to try and change the narrative. We could show you plenty of vision where everyone is spread out evenly across the whole ground, it’s just that no one wants to show those on TV.

Essendon might be in with a chance with both Darling and Kennedy out. *Might, but I hope not.

Agreed. Will be interesting to see what Simmo does up forward, maybe NicNat and Lycett swapping between ruck and full forward... Shudder to think what The Gov's value would sky rocket to if he plays full forward and kicks a bag.

Horse called Gil as soon as he found out about the meeting and asked what they were discussing! That is the most outrageous part of this story. That is how a teenage girl behaves.

Well his favourite song IS teenage dirtbag!!

Not to mention the arms go above the head okay when flopping on the ground for a free kick.

Really? Thought he was playing OK for them
Played some ok games early. He looks good when they're winning and putrid when they're not. That's him in a nutshell.

The best part is I have a North supporting mate who was giving me stick about Hawthorn making a huge mistake letting him go. Safe to say he has been more quiet of late.

Some posters here thought he was - he really wasn’t. If he was turning in those performances for us the melts would have been huge.

Ladies and gentlemen we at channel 7 are well chuffed to once again give you all the pleasure of Basil Zempilas.
Australia's most shithouse commentator.
End of.
I'm guessing they thought they hit on winners with Dennis Cometti and Ant Hudson? But Basil who looks like the bastard offspring of them both is simply a repetitive, no- personality having buffoon.

Seen Basil’s latest gig on Weekend Sunrise? He is ******* painful to watch on there - his co-host can’t stand him and isn’t averse to showing it either.

West coast losing (which looks likely) actually tightens everything right up above us. Gives more teams a chance if they do what they need to do an opportunity to squeeze into the top 4. Not just saying we will but it opens up for everyone else fighting for a spot in the 8.
