Good
  • Rankine. Was good in the midfield and good up forward.
  • Dawson. When he actually had CBAs, was playing well. Dropped some contested marks he should've taken and had a chance to win it, but he was one of our better players and helped get us back into the game late.
  • Fogarty. Missed a crucial shot, but stepped up on a day that Tex went missing.
  • Michalanney. Thought he did a good job on Charlie.

Okay
  • Laird, Crouch and Soligo. Though Laird and Crouch were good at extracting the ball and we need these tough insiders, their disposal out of the pack wasn't always the best.
  • ROB. What I really hate is when ROB gets a clearance, because he (as most ruckman would do) is throws the ball onto the boot to no one in particular. If he has a clean clearance, he should be looking to handpass it off to someone who is free, not just throwing it on the boot.
  • Sholl and Himmelberg had decent games.

Bad
  • McHenry and Jones.
  • Nank as the sub
  • Curtin doesn't look up to AFL standard
  • Smithers is way past his prime. Half the time he was on 1st, 2nd year players. His experience didn't show.
  • Butts. He's only playing because he's better than Borlase, which is questionable.

Ugly
- Game in the balance and the final CBAs had Laird, Crouch and Soligo with Dawson on the wing. This was after Dawson had been dominating and had the last centre clearance. Dawson even said that Brisbane had a lot of big bodied midfielders, so to have Laird and Crouch who are exactly the same type of extractors is silly.

Those writing off a 19yo in his second game need to take a breath.
I don't think anyone's writing him off, we just seem him more as a HB/mid given he played there regularly as a junior.

Playing him as a tall defender is doing nothing for his confidence. The kid has sublime skills, let him use them.

Ugly:
Not only do we roll with Nankervis as sub, but when we bring him on, we refuse to even play him for 5 seconds in his best position, the wing.

Tell me why he has to START the second half in defense?

6-6-6

Why the heck weren’t those 6 players
Michalanney
Butts
Worrell
Keane
Smith
Hinge

Yes I’m aware Worrell then got injured, further highlighting how stupid the decision to sub Curtin off at half time was, especially considering McHenry was playing the worst game ever played by a human person at that stage.

But the fact remains that Nankervis STARTED at half back, which is dumb. He’s a wingman. I’m sure everyone fell off their chairs when Nank’s opponent scored the first goal of the half - yeah maybe because Nank isn’t a fking defender for crying out loud.

Chayce Jones is not a wingman’s left nut and Chayce is actually pretty good defensively. Swap them. Fk me.

So let’s go through these decisions by Nicks.

1) selects McHenry in the 22 despite nobody with a clue thinking that’s a good idea - how did that work out?

2) selects Nankervis as sub despite there being 5 more suitable options in the 23.

3) Plays 2nd gamer 18 year old Dan Curtin as deep in defence as he possibly can, completely neutralising all of his strengths.

4) subs out Curtin for the 2nd week in a row (no doubt absolutely crushing his confidence in the process), this time at half time. 3 mins later we cop an injury to the most similar player in the squad to Curtin.

5) At the single most crucial moment of the game in the 4th qtr, rolls with NEITHER of Rankine or Dawson at the centre bounce.

This guy is an absolute dunce. Will never, ever even make finals, let alone anything approaching success. Sack it now.

The amount of errors made today especially by hand and foot in tight were inexcusable. Was real bottom 4 team errors.

The amount of handouts the Crows gave to Brisbane were just so costly, especially when that team have shown this year they are quite limited in how they can play, they were banged up and the Crows had 3 days extra break.

Was quite ironic Ah Chee took that uncontested mark and ended up kicking that goal to tie things up, no one seemed able to track him for most of the game. Defending was lacking a lot at times, they got far too lost in transition.

Rankine amazing, Fog back into some form is at least a positive, funny how Fog getting back to his best coincides with Tex not looking at his. Dawson lifted the team again like against Essendon.

Seemed a bit like Groundhog Day in the middle of the park though, Brisbane have been able to get on top in that area against the Crows for years which always makes it hard, ROB beaten by Big O again and when he did get hands to it he hit it straight to Brisbane mids, Berry making Laird pay out the other side of stoppages and Crouch also getting sucked in ball tracking and allowing an easy outlet for Brisbane in contested situations.

Soligo also costly at times in what was a down performance, as great as he’s been his disposal is a little questionable.

Was also classic “don’t get beaten by what you know”, allowing Andrews to dominate the air and Zorko to run around like an unregistered dog and not put any effort in stopping that or Brisbane’s chip, mark uncontested game early which is their main methodology also showed yet again a real lack of planing and execution again by the coaches and playing group.

Absolutely sh*t what happened to Worrell’s wrist in a tackle that was probably in the back too.

Also these face-palm moments;

  • Smith a 250+ game veteran in the side for ‘experience’ not knowing you can’t just smack the ball out of bounds in a non-marking contests 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • Fog’s late kick that lands in the middle of Rachele and Himmelberg who then both leave it alone 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • McHenry 🤦🏻‍♂️, miss from 15 metres out 🤦🏻‍♂️, running around in a circle in defence 🤦🏻‍♂️, getting in the way of his own teammates 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • ROB changing all momentum of the game late in the 3rd qtr by hitting it straight to Brisbane players at 3 successive stoppages 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • Walker just accepting Payne was going to get the ball and dropping his head 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • Brisbane just walking in goals in the first half with some poor efforts close to goal from Hinge, Michalanney, Curtin, Smith and Keane 🤦🏻‍♂️
  • Hipwood having 3 shots at goal in 3 minutes in the 2nd qtr, unforgivable 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thought we were the second best team out there, have to take the draw.
Our bottom 5 or 6 players just aren't Afl standard, Nicks need to rotate more players thru this team so we can see what we have going forward, the season is done finals wise but don't waste it completely

If McLuggage is gettable, get him.

Would compliment and improve our midfield set up.

Push Laird to HB. Smithers retired.

Smithers won't retire. He's already triggered his contract extension and the Crows don't have the guts to drop him. I'm sure everyone prefers to have Crouch in the centre and Laird off half back, but Smithers has that role and I don't think Laird wants to go back there. Laird talked about rotating half forward, which may have happened earlier in the season, but that was a failed experiment. He's now only in the middle but with less TOG.

People complaining about midfield mix, didn’t think we got killed in the midfield at all. Defensive structure just didn’t turn up today. And their tall defenders absolutely dominated.

HOWEVER, what a good Coach would have done is give Curtin a gee-up at half-time, move him out of defence, tell him to go for it and make Nicks keep him on the ground.
But no, not our Nicks.
Dragged the kid, has probably set him back in confidence, then the Worrell injury-shat hit the fan.

Bad, bad Coaching.
100% agree with this, inexcusable. Curtin was poor, but it's second game ffs. The coach should have sent him back at for another 10 minutes at the very least & said win some contests, back yourself in. Instead Nicks has panicked, rushed him out of the game & probably given his confidence a real hit when he was probably already feeling like he let the team down. Nothing like your coach massively reinforcing them feelings instead of backing you in for a bit.

Goodness me the constant McHenry bashing gets tiresome when he was better than Tex, Smith, Hinge, Curtin, Nank, Cook. By no means was Ned spectacular today but wasn't the main reason we didnt win.

Soligo unreal again, Rankine a star and Fog starting to work back into some form. Losing Worrell is going to hurt considering his form, but hopefully Nicks an co. continue to back in Curtin.
The problem is when does McSpudry ever play a good game?
All the others you mentioned besides Curtin who is a 2nd game player, have had impact this year. McSpudry adds absolutely nothing week after week.
We would lose nothing by dropping him and playing someone like Taylor or Dowling.
McSpudry hasn't improved at all from his 1st game until now.
He's dead weight. Drop and de-list is the only answer.

Not many here owning up to realising your comment is right...Laird Keys first half 10% of what you expect from them. Not many owning up to being wrong about other 'health' things either. It's a human trait, being too proud to admit when wrong. I admit I slandered McHenry a lot lately but he was not near the worst. Nicks playing players out of position and the lack of effort by so many especially first half lost us the game. Kicking long to the Lions Key backs too often also.

He was also playing on Ah Chee, who was their most dangerous forward (after Cameron) at the time. They could've put him on second gamer Logan Morris, or 2nd year player Lohmann?

We drew despite:

Nicks coaching and selecting
Worrell doing his wrist
McHenry playing
Smith bombing to the other side
Cook and Rachele mostly being absent
Tex having a shocker
Jones reminding us we could have had Butters
Jarrod Berry reminding us we took Gallucci
Keane playing his worst for a long time
Laird killing momentum every time he touched it

Amazing, really.

Disconnect between recruiters and coaches. Everyone can see Curtins future wasn't as a key defender.
I'd suggest it's even worse than there being a disconnect. We know it's not his role, we've said it, but we'd need to move a senior player out to accommodate him and that is one thing we will not do under any circumstances.

Same sub move could be made at 3 quarter time and worrall snaps his wrist 2 mins into the last quarter.

the more game time left the more chance of an injury. Thats why it was a bad call. Nicks gambled and lost. I agree, you could do that another 10 times and no injury. Its a gamble. But the sub is the sub to cover injuries, not to replace kids who are struggling.
