Assistant Coach Newman is off to Richmond as well!

Is McQualter any chop? If so, perhaps a straight trade?

Edit: Sorry mods if this should have been posted on the hypothetheticals thread

😳

I get the impression that O'Hara was happy to return home but tough for Jeka and Morris, both of whom showed a bit. It will be interesting to see if either gets picked up. Jeka has some AFL level skills but maybe not the application. Morris has plenty of application but had a rotten time with injuries, Seamus went past him and BMac looks promising. I wouldn't be surprised if Morris finds his way onto a rookie list somewhere.

Losing Jeka and Kosy really does leave us very light on for key position players.

Letting Jeka go may indicate the club is confident of landing Chol?
Could always offer a Rookie contract if we're stuck. If we think he's worth keeping in any capacity then I'm sure we've made that part of our discussion.

Usually the first round of cuts are firm. If we re rookie it tends to come with the next round of cuts and its usually made explicit in the announcement.

But if a surprise re Jeka not that he earned it but with lack of KP stocks I thought he’d either be kept as depth or potentially traded for a late pick. Morris always gone never recovered from injuries bad luck but looked hardly vfl standard this year. Fionn good try but wasn’t going to make it quickly if at all and your heart really needs to be in it to make the required sacrifices. Anyway congrats on living out our dream to play for the HFC and good luck!

That makes 6 departures.

I don’t think we’ll be selecting with our 6th pick, but it makes tham all ‘live’ for bid matching

Of course it won’t work out this way
As it stands we only have 3 picks and they are 3, 22 & 77.
Obviously we will get picks for Brockman (if he doesn’t walk to psd) and Kosi but they could be future picks.
I could see us taking unders for both if we are given multiple picks in return.

We will also have to deal for Massimo

I can’t see us delisting many if any more players when we don’t have the draft picks to cover for them

Here's Version 1 of the state of our list for 2024! :) I have done this for the last couple of seasons so thought I'd crank it out again.

Some notes:
  • I have based all contract lengths off the info currently in our own Contract Status thread.
  • Brockman and Kosi I just chucked straight in the 'delisted/retired/traded/FA' box because they are 99.9% gone, if not more.
  • Newcombe I have auto-promoted to the senior list because I am 99.9% sure we need to do that this year. The other rookie listed players I have left on the rookie list and will wait for confirmation of any other upgrades.
  • At this stage we will require a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10 players to be acquired via some combination of re-signing (Greene, Bramble, Long, Serong, Bennetts), trade, free agency, national draft, PSD, rookie draft and SSP - looks like Massimo D'Ambrosio will be one of those!

As always, let me know if you spot any mistakes!

Jeka is a back and didn’t play a game.
Another preseason into Ryan, Ramma, Serong and DGB and we’ll arguably have more options than start of this year.

Where do you get those picks from? We have 3,30,49,77. Traded our second in the weddle deal and we have dogs second and third 30/49 shifted back one spot now the welfare state have got a priority pick.

I did a google search and found it in draft guru, draft guru is wrong and you are right.
Zero hangar confirms what you have just said.

Still only leaves us with 4 picks so we will need to get at least a couple more picks come draft night.

Our rookie list is packed full of talent, Blanck, Ryan, S.Mitchell and Ramsden, that's 4 quality players and a bit of an unknown in Tucker (upgrade Blanck and S.Mitchell?)

I think Bramble and Serong might be close to gone? Long might get another year after the big improvement this year?, Greene could be a good 3rd tall/medium I would keep him on the list for another year or 2? Bennetts has been great should get a 1-2 year extension

DGB might be a trade?

All four of those players are not very physically developed though.

As a cohort they are at least a couple of years away from being big enough to compete with the likes of May, Weitering, etc.

Still think we need a bigz strong unit as back up to Lewis which is why we need to chase Chol hard.

The fact we need Chol so badly, they'll probably squeeze us hard.

Do we need him badly?

Throughout their careers statistically Chol and Kozi are near identical.

If we are willing to part with Kozi what is the benefit replacing him with an equal who is 3 years older?

I dare say Ramma development will play a huge part in this.

Meek and the two ruck set-up did not work. I would not be relaying on Ryan to play 100 games

I don't get why some people seem hell bent on chasing Chol. Where did all this come from? Is it because he kicked a few goals against our seconds?
Did forget to mention DGB, though.
For those not wanting Chol as a 'stop gap', there are several reasons why (IMO) he'd be good for us to have.

Firstly, Lewis is yet to play more than 15 games in a season. Obviously it's ideal for us if that could start changing but it's not guaranteed. It got pretty ugly at times this year with our forward structure and I don't think we want another year of our mids trying to feed a forward line like they had to this year. They need better than a Kosi-Greene-Brockman mould in terms of marking targets. When Lewis doesn't play next year, I'd much rather have Chol leading the charge with Ryan and maybe Rama around him than just the latter 2 by themselves.

And when Lewis DOES play, I think Lewis-Chol-Ryan as targets with Breust, Moore and another small (Watson?) around them is actually structurally sound and potentially damaging enough as a combination to pose a threat to at least average AFL defences. We want our mids developing with a competitive forwardline to reinforce good habits when attacking.

Again, if Lewis should happen to be injured - what would happen if a Ryan-Rama-Meek combo doesn't work? It could get ugly, and we may see more experimenting with Scrim and/or Frost down there or maybe worst of all - Sicily, given someone not in the team will be able to play his role in the meantime. I can't say I'd be optimistic on any of the above getting results.

As other have mentioned, Chol's ability to relieve in the ruck is also a positive because I can't remember the Reeves/Meek duo working well together and he's an upgrade on Kosi and Nash in that space. Maybe the intention one day is Rama could do this but he doesn't look nearly ready for it.

And the last thing I'll add - hypothetically in 3-4 years if we are competing and we do in fact have some other good KPF and R/F supporting Lewis who we have either picked up as FA or through the draft... Every good team needs depth and Chol would be a more-than-capable replacement in those positions should he happen to be needed (and players in those positions often are!).

If that's where this all ends up, that's still a good result for this transaction (and that's without factoring the potential for the deal to also be our shot at getting Pick 4 off them over the other teams!).
