Well excuse me for making a positive post about the current state at Essendon. Many of you will roll your eyes at this. Not surprising considering the amount of "supporters" that post crap about our own team. So before you do let me just get in first.

Watching the game tonight there wasn't any point that I thought we had a chance. However I was more concerned in watching the host of players in either their first, second or handful of games. I was excited.

It's almost impossible for us to be competitive at the moment especially with our three best players (Lucus, McVeigh and Fletcher) plus a host of others out. What's important as supporters is to remain aware of this and focus instead on what is clearly going to be a long rebuilding process.

There was genuine promise on show for Essendon tonight and players such as Daniher, Neagle and Atkinson all playing their first or second games showed that.

I hope Knights shows restraint in bringing back guys like Pev and JJ and instead focusing on giving these young kids games under their legs. We will be lucky to win 5 games this year but that's okay. Setting us up for the future, recognizing and encouraging the talent we have is what's important now.

It's clear to see that making a few subtle changes in the game plan getting the right players in the right positions is what this year will be all about.

We show that decision making and execution is where we're letting ourselves down. I'm encouraged by our continued effort to win the contested ball and the areas where we're struggling just take time and practice as a unit on the big stage.

Here we are playing a new game plan with a large amount of inexperience. These young kids are fed so much information on what to do it will take them a while to make it second nature and to get it right. All the while trying to do it against a host of teams with experience.

Give it time and soon you will all be excited just like me.

Rubbish post, Not a single bagging out of a player, Surely you could of fit in a "CJ is crap" in there!:p

To be serious, Good post. Sounds like Neagle had a great game whilst Darcy,Atkinson and Myers had pretty good debuts. Coming into the game, That was the important thing, how they went.

Its pretty hard to be positive at the moment.

I rate Houli and Ryder. The rest are either unproven or unworthy.

I think we are so desperate to see positives we are over-rating our youth. All other supporters don't rate any, other than the few mentioned.

I can see years of pain coming, hope I'm wrong.

I'll be the realist here.

Daniher had a rubbish first game.
Myesr was just okay but should get another game next week.
Atkinson was serviceable but he'll certainly go back to Bendigo when Fletcher returns from injury.

Neagle did have a good game. Atkinson made errors but at least was competitive. Played for some time on Motlop so as you can see it was a tough first game. All the new kids made bad errors but what else should we expect?????? Seriously.

Darcy may have played to early but hey we don't have a lot of options and he still had a real crack at it.

so long as they are man enough to start realigning the season on the training track.

We know that we can run but we also know we cannot put the skills together use the speed.

What was the story at half time

ess 56/34
port 34/58

Handball to kicking ratio

I welcome your positive thread but what I saw tonight was just crap, the lack of tackling, the players turning their backs on the play and the number of times we over did the handball to see a turnover also on several occasions we had numbers only to lose the contest.

While the future may look good, the present is disgraceful, for the first time in 30 years I serious question where is this club headed in the short term, last week was insipid and pathetic, this week we were worst.

Excellent post, but unfortunately we have too many pea-hearted supporters, yet they are the first to have a go at the players, coaching staff, board etc.

I am more upset with them than the team at the moment, at least there are excuses for our team due to injuries & young players, the pea-hearted supporters have no excuse.

Also, I wonder how many of them have memberships & attend the games.

Positives:

Myers - looked composed and his disposal was top notch. Must be played at the expense of Monfries and Dyson.

Atkinson - I like the look of this kid and I'd be happy to give a few more games. If he can improve skills and decision making by a bit then he could possibly make it.

Hislop - His attack and toughness around the contest gets me excited. Must be played ahead of Dyson and Monfries for the rest of the year.

Neagle - He looks like he's about to spew and die out there but he's as strong as an ox and makes things happen. Gets murdered on the rebound but we have to play him until Lucas and Gumby are ready.

Houli - gets a stack of it and uses it quite well. Still makes a few mistakes but I think they'll be ironed out with experience and better players around him.

Watson - I think he's been fantastic the past few weeks and is more than capable of being a very good player in a good midfield.

Can't wait til gumby can start developing.

i am also excited at the prospect of seeing a lineup such as this in 2009:

B: Hislop, Michael, Fletcher
HB: McPhee, Ryder, Dempsey
C: Stanton, Watson, Myers
HF: Lovett, Gumbleton, Jetta
F: Lucas, Llloyd, Davey
Foll: Hille, McVeigh, Houli
Int: Monfries, Winderlich, Laycock, Welsh

If the majority of these guys were injury free we'd win more games than we lose. If we had lucas and gumby we could afford the luxury of playing mcphee on the hbf where he played his best footy when all australian. given our luck with injury who knows if this will ever happen but i can only pray. With McPhee down back we might be able to release Ryder more and possibly even leave laycock out of the side.

Myers disposal was horrible tonight I thought. He shanked way too many kicks, he was just lucky that they fell into the arms of our players.

And singling out Dyson again Kelvin, I thought you were past that. He had a decent game and was far from out worst. He played on Surjan and Rodan, and neither of them had their regular impact on the game.

i must have been watching a different game.

dyson - shocking. went backwards/sideways turning it over. 2/10

myers - his kicking was very good. for a 1st gamer 7/10.

Im pretty sure the ones he shanked were on his right foot. That piece of play when he beat two port players in the back pocket then had the composure to hit the target was fantastic. He wasn't that bad

Funny how Hird shanked a lot of kicks but they always went to our team. ;) Myers disposal was at 86%. He looked very tired out there and second efforts were lacking a bit but he must be persisted with as he as a lot of positive attributes.

Dyson was horrible. Got caught by Westhoff early, did his usual disappearing trick when the game was there to be won and gave us nothing.

All you Dyson lovers were crying foul because Sheeds didn't give him a go. Knights has and he's had 7 games now to show something and he's done absolutely nothing. He's not up to it and the sooner you realise the easier it'll be on your love stricken heart. :p

That's probably why we're playing them. So they can prove themselves worthy. Just a guess.

I wouldnt blame you if you were, we were shocking

I didnt say his disposal was good, but he was accountable for his opponents, which is more than you can say for the rest of our midfield

myers - his kicking was very good. for a 1st gamer 7/10.
Shouldnt matter whether he is a first gamer or a 200 game player. You shouldnt be shanking kicks playing at AFL level, even if it is your opposite foot.

Agree Kelvin, Dyson can piss off back to Bendigo, he's getting worse not better. :o

The players I have bolded didn't play tonight!

While I'm very disappointed with tonights performance and it would be extremely easy to come in here and unload on it but I'm starting to get a sense that there is a problem that may be an experiance thing or it may be that the coach needs to focus the players minds on what they should be doing.

The overpossion, lack of tackling, what appears to be a lack of talking and players going to ground a little to easily, we seem to have too many guys waiting for the ball to come to them and on too many occasions the forward line appears to stagnate.

I believe all these problems can be overcome.

Getting desperate there Kelvin, comparing Myers to Hird ;)
Myers disposal was at 86%.
Doesnt mean they were terrible kicks, it just means an Essendon player was there to make it look good.
He looked very tired out there and second efforts were lacking a bit but he must be persisted with as he as a lot of positive attributes.
His second efforts were non existent. The amount of times a Port player ran away from Myers was amazing. He needs to lift his workrate. If it is a fitness problem, he shouldnt have played.

Dyson was horrible. Got caught by Westhoff early, did his usual disappearing trick when the game was there to be won and gave us nothing.
The game was never there to be won, we were blown away in the 1st quarter. Dyson had 17 disposals. Sure, some of them were horrible but you cant say he was our worst. Rodan has been tearing it up in recent weeks and Dyson held him well.

All you Dyson lovers were crying foul because Sheeds didn't give him a go. Knights has and he's had 7 games now to show something and he's done absolutely nothing. He's not up to it and the sooner you realise the easier it'll be on your love stricken heart. :p
Kelvin, I realise Dyson isnt the best player. In other teams, he probably wouldnt get a game. But at the moment, we are stuck with him. The sooner YOU realise that, the better it will be for your hate filled heart

I dont know which game you were at, but Welsh played, and Davey didnt.
