Rance was a great intercepting backman, but nowhere near the top tier when it came to one on one defending.

Common misconception the Rance wasn't good one on one. Only player to regularly get the upper hand of Buddy.

McGovern has gone past Rance IMO.

Both had incredible purple patches, but Gov had a fantastic year as a veteran in 2024 in a really bad team. Rance retiring at 30 brings him down on the longevity scale.

I actually agree with this. He was a really good traditional man on man defender. Then you changed your defensive system and he was outstanding zoning off his man to kill a heap of contests, but was gettable if the opposition brought it in under limited pressure.

Players get remembered for their most iconic roles. Gaz Snr will always be remembered for his speckies, but he probably played his best footy in the second half of his career when he kept both feet on the ground and killed his opponents with leading, strength in one on ones and ground level ability. And some still think of Nick Daicos as an outside receiver, despite getting the third most clearances in the AFL last year.

I remember watching a young Sachin Tendulkar cream the Aussie bowlers. I thought **** me, this kids going to an all time great. I don't remember saying - he doesn't hit it as hard as Viv Richards. Tendulker not in the GOAT conversation, only because the cricketing GOAT is miles ahead of anyone else to have ever played the game.

But if you're discussing who comes in next at #2, Tendulker is very much in the mix.

If footy's history had a Bradman we'd be discussing Nick's potential to be the second greatest of all time.

This is where the conversation is at:

1. Chris Judd had just as good a start to his career. Now Juddy is undoubtedly one of the greats of the sport who peaked early and was slowed down a bit by OP which also affected his kicking. Early on he was tracking to be the GOAT but had to settle for one of the greatest of all time.

2. Bont is a more complete player. Yes the 30 year old widely acclaimed as the greatest bulldog of all time is a more complete player than the third year Nick, probably not more damaging though.

He's tracking at a level where serious injuries aside he seems certain to become one of the greats of the game, yet some posters are carrying on as though a call that he might have the potential to the greatest ever is more outrageous and optimistic than saying that some 18 year old whose never played a game is going to be a star, which is said about most top 10 draftees and a heap taken later.

He's certainly not making it for the starting centre spot or the rovers.
