Am I the only one who has no idea what this is?

It's some sort of arbitrary mishmash of stats put together to form a rating.

It's horseshit.

Ryder missed a year so that's a year of raking up points not earned. He ended 2015 ranked 70 and if he played and had an ok 2016 and then this year he would probably be ranked in that 50-70 mark.

So in a totally even comp, each club would have 1 player in the top 18, 2 in the top36, 3 in the top 54, 4 in the top 72 5 in the top 90 and 6 in the top 108 etc with 10 in the top 180.

We have 15 not 10 in the top 180.

The issue is how this compares to our main competitors- Adelaide, Sydney, Richmond, GWS and Geelong?

Very favourably. The ratings on afl.com.au say we have 12 but our trade acquisitions have not been included and are all in the top 180. None of our outgoing players were in the top 180. Adelaide gained one top 180 player(Bryce Gibbs) but lost one(Jake Lever). They have 15 in the top 180. Geelong also lost one player from the top 180(Steven Motlop) and gained one(Gary Ablett) and have a total of 12. GWS have 13, Sydney 10 and Richmond 9.
The fact that Richmond has only 9 and that non-finalists Western Bulldogs have 12 seems to say these ratings may be overrated

Or that coaching/game plan, player fitness/injury, the venue, the umpiring and the weather may also play a part in a team’s fortunes.

Correct - the good/average players rated 12-22 on the Richmond list excelled in 2017 and that's why they won the GF.

Our good/average players rated 12-22 remained average. And of course blockhead Jonas got suspended which was the primary reason we lost the elimination final.

It's all a spin off of Moneyball . The only difference is that you would cross reference the player rating or stat to the players salary.
In my opinion a smarter way of doing it is to get your set of metrics and if a player is in the Top 10% of the sample group he is rated elite. if you are in the next 20 percentile rated very good , next 20 percentile good and if you are in the bottom 50 percentile below average. You can then rate your metrics depending on importance to you and then get your result.
