Cool coincidence, but how the **** do people know these things or have the drive to find out?
They have a database of AFL stats, probably downloaded from AFL Tables, probably use Microsoft Access, and do query searches.

If you watch Swamp's twitter account, the stats guy who works for broadcasters footy and cricket, people send him messages asking questions about players born a certain day, surnames, goals kicked on federal election dates etc type questions. He just has to type in 20-40 seconds worth of stuff into his query and press a button and he gets an answer.

What are Microsoft selling in these days? Their database basic software, like excel or word, has had bugger all improvements over 20 years.

Maybe the SMA can find some more cash for them...

Good lord!

They genuinely believe players will be going just for the money. How high must they rate that ******* comp.

They use web crawlers and scrapers that pull the data from various publicly available sources. They may also have champion data access. There is no database, they collect the data themselves in .csv format and use it in R-studio, Power BI, Tableau and the like.

Good Lord!... The Player Retention Scheme 2.0...

Where the likes of Rudi Mandemaker and Gary McIntoch were payed mega dollars (in relative terms) to not join the then VFL (bankrolled in large part by the revenue generating power of the PAFC!!)

Excel is great at what it does. It's a good tool for simple analysis and it's cheap - particularly for corporates with microsoft licensing agreements. PowerBI often comes free as part company licensing agreement as they're trying to flog it off to build a customer base - then get people hooked on Azure and Sharepoint etc. as a result to rake in more cash.

Who is they?

Most of the amateur stats guys on Twitter.

Internally the clubs have data warehouses and data feeds from champion data, catapult etc.
The amateur stats guys seem to fall into 2 categories. Those who do detailed simulations and crunch a shot load of performance stats. They want an analytics type job at a club.

Then there are guys who just do simple queries to produce basic historical information with quirky outcomes. These guys aren't into the analytics they are just info junkies. Those sort of guys have been doing this for 10-15 years plus like Ron the Bear on Bigfooty and a couple of my mates who got bored with it after a few years. A simple software database does the job adequately for these types.
