F*ck it. I’ll believe. Our younger, fresher players and take it on style will trouble them. Along with our new look forward line and smalls of Berry, Richards, Rioli etc. It’ll be close until the 4th and we’ll overrun em. Port by 13

Absolutely smacked in our last 2 encounters against Collingwood at the G will do that to you.

2 x 70 point turnarounds.

I expect we will lose and comfortably. We have not played well against top sides away from home in the Hinkley era, in fact we usually get belted. Our biggest hope is that Collingwood are actually on a large decline, that hasn't become obvious yet.
Yep. It is Round 1 so random shit does happen but Collingwood remaining at very juicy odds.

I can't wrap my head around taking Houston out of the team above that got smacked and adding him to the team that did the smacking and being at all confident. Yeh there's give and take with peripheral players but they're of no consequence really

They'll be highly motivated to respond to last week as well

The only things in our favour is it'll be warm, we would be fresh and there are no expectations to win.

I'm stuck in this weird contradiction. I'm not overly optimistic but it annoys me that everyone has already written off Port and expect them to finish around 10th to 14th this season.

What better way to silence the critics for a bit with a win. Forward line is already heaps better with new personnel and no more bombing the ball to a guy who limps every time he walks and the expectation that he either marks the ball or brings the ball to the ground. Not to mention, there is genuine space now for the forwards to lead up and it is not crowded as much. Nothing needs to be said about the midfield at full strength; wish that Butters didn't get injured but it is what it is. The real question is whether the back 6 can defend and not get beaten often.

System will determine if Port can win. Teams can have all the talent in the world but if the system cannot fully make use of those talents, teams won't win.

Nice to see the positive spirit but we still have Ken Hinkley calling the shots so there is a chance that only the names will change.

It's funny hearing the players publicly saying now that he's gone that they were "too Dixon conscious for far too long" and they're learning this year to play a different way , yet they denied this was the case for years?
The fact they admit they were Dixon conscious despite him being a useless stobie pole for half a decade says it all
Everything changes if you have forwards that actually lead.
Dixon couldn’t move and Marshall was too busy hitting his head on the ground.
Forwards must be more demanding not just stand around like lost sheep.

I’m looking forward to see how the upgraded forward line goes, especially not having McEntee, Evans and Narkle. Looks so much better on paper
Butters and BZT absences aside, I really like the balance and evenness of our best 23.

Solid, competitive, reliable ruck.
Talented midfield that still needs to find its best in big games.
Dangerous, busy forward line.
Athletic defenders who can defend, but also intercept and rebound.
Youngish age profile.

It’s the depth if injuries hit that worries me, but if Moraes, Whitlock, Lai, Walsh and Lorenz turn out ok, our depth will improve quickly.

I was feeling delusionally optimistic up until today. Then the memory of past MCG maulings at the hands of Daicos, Pendlebury and friends jolted me out of my hopeful haze. I just can’t see us being competitive for long enough. Unfortunately, I’m now back to expecting the pedestrian, reactive Port from the Mount Barker Crows trial game to resurface. Hope I’m wrong.

It starts with the captain. You only need to look at how influential Nankervis was the other night to lift the spirit of a young, weak Richmond team. Rozee needs to set a high standard and JHF needs to be a constant force alongside him.

Looking forward to watching this new forward line and hoping for great games from Jones, Sinn and Evans to support Bergman.

I’m keen to see how this team on paper translates into on field presence.

I’m eerily optimistic. Would be a great start to the year knocking them off at the MCG.

Same, the pre-2004 Port supporter was ready for this game all week.

But now I feel like I shouldn't have any expectations because ... well we all know why ...
Hope I'm wrong but I'm not expecting it.
Just piss off Ken, I want some never say die mongrel back, not the clown from camperdown and his book of excuses.

Just win and send the overcooked football media into a death spiral about Collingwood.
Collingwood 0-2 after round 1 does have a very nice ring to it.

I can't say I'm optimistic but I want to see us go back to that football of 2013-14 where we were so hungry for the ball, moved the ball quickly with fast attacking play and were always looking to kick goals, right from the opening bounce.

Even if we play that way and lose, I would be more optimistic for the season ahead knowing that's the way we intend to play, because it can click into place quickly and keeps teams off-balance and under pressure.

Just out of interest, when was the last time we beat Collingwood?
2021 at Docklands, we won by 28. Lost the last 4 games (one by 6 points, one by 2).

I swear this is incorrect? We won at the MCG a few years ago when wines kicked a goal in the forward pocket - we won by a few points. That was 2022? If I remember correctly?

Also 2021 in R10, the game in the season before Docklands (R19).
