ROUND 7: RICHMOND VS ESSENDON

Ikon Park

Saturday October 14 @ 7.20pm AEDT

Saturday night’s AFLW Dreamtime clash is shaping to be season-defining for both Essendon and Richmond.

The inaugural Dreamtime clash last season saw fans treated to a thriller in tough Port Melbourne conditions, with a late rally seeing the Bombers save the margin to two points, and almost secured a big upset. The Tigers would eventually hold on to secure the win, closing the first chapter in a brewing rivalry between the two clubs at AFLW level.

The Bombers are 4-2, coming into tonight's game off the back of a stirring comeback win over the Cats in Warrnambool. Full of confidence, the Dons have a chance to surpass their win tally from last season with three H&A games still to play.

Meanwhile the Tigers (3-3) will be keen to bounce back after falling to a behind on the siren in last week’s one-point loss to the Suns.

Be at the ground before 7:15pm for the Welcome to Country led by Uncle Colin Hunter Jr.

The Bombers climbed back into the top 8 last week after securing a sensational 10-point win over Geelong.

Reflecting on a goalless first quarter, Head Coach Natalie Wood recounted her quarter time address.

“There was probably a two-goal wind to the left of screen, so going in at quarter-time I tried to reinforce with our players that we were in a good position and we had the advantage.

Essendon went to work in the second term, leading contested possessions 14 to four for the term and generating three of the first four inside 50s. 0

“We had to go back to last week and fix a few things, so (we’re) really happy we were able to play the conditions a bit better and improve from last week. I was probably just most impressed that we were able to adapt a few things in our game style and put ourselves in the contest which was most pleasing.”

With a minute left on the clock and only three behinds on the scoreboard, Amber Clarke snapped the ball towards goal. As the ball looked sure to spray across the face, it miraculously bounced backward to slot through the posts and give the Bombers a much-needed six points.

The second half was kickstarted with a goal from Bombers co-captain Bonnie Toogood, cutting the margin to one point and bring herself within three majors of her 50 career goals milestone, with the 3rd quarter concluding with scores level, ready for a big last quarter.

Georgia Nanscawen (24 disposals, six clearances) worked diligently to put the ball back in the hands of the Bombers. Meanwhile, Maddy Prespakis celebrated her 50th game in style, and went to work against little sister Georgie to dominate the midfield (33d, 6c to 26d, 10c) and take home family bragging rights.

The game finally turned in Essendon's favour in the last term, with Daria Bannister kicking truly to put Essendon in the lead, followed by another from Amber Clarke to seal the win.

Essendon will remain unchanged for its round seven clash against Richmond, led by co-captain and star forward Bonnie Toogood who has been integral to the Bombers’ strong start to season eight. The presence of Toogood and Katie Brennan in each forward line presents healthy challenges for defenders, so don’t be surprised by a high-scoring encounter on Saturday.

The Bombers have been propelled by some underrated links in recent weeks, with Daria Bannister has been an important presence up forward, booting a critical goal against the Cats and laying seven tackles, while a breakout two-goal performance from Amber Clarke saw the 18-year-old receive a Rising Star nomination.

A blistering second half saw co-skipper Steph Cain finish with 14 disposals, seven tackles and four clearances, providing some big contests in the Bombers’ surges forward, while Georgia Nanscawen continued her terrific return campaign with a 25-disposal outing. But it is the midfield battle between Maddy Prespakis and Tigers gun Monique Conti that will go a long way in determining Saturday’s result. Conti is averaging 26 disposals and seven clearances per game this season, Prespakis similarly dominant with averages of 28 disposals and six clearances.

Ellyse Gamble and Georgia Clarke combined for nine marks in defence last week, and retain their spots, while defender Mia Busch stays in the side after being named as a late inclusion in last week's win.
