I don't buy into the "anyone can win Showdowns"

Ladder position may suggest otherwise, but we have been the better side the last two seasons. We have won 3/4. Could be 4/4 had Houston not knocked out Rankine last game.

I always thought whoever was lower on the ladder tended to win showdowns.

Have I checked the stats to back test my theory? Of course not

what are you on about. never said he sucks, just said he hasnt commanded a spot. pretty consistent. But unless im 100% on the narrative of some people im the worst person ever.

Doesnt seem to matter that im not against his selection.

Btw did I mention im not on the selection committee. So no matter what I say, its entirely meaningless so justifying why Sid should be selected for pages and how bad the Crows selection committee is to me and how im wrong, it absolutely means nothing as it changes nothing.
Lalor averaging 14 disposals from 7 games 82% TOG being played in his position
O'Sullivan averaging 13 disposals from 7 games 79% TOG being played in his position
Draper averaging 8 disposals from 7 games 44% TOG being played in no mans land
L Ashcroft averaging 21 disposals from 8 games 77% TOG being played in his position
Langford averaging 18 disposals from 7 games 66% TOG being played in his position

One of these things is not like the others.

Ive seen the games, and its argued Draper is playing out of position, but he has not really set the world on fire commanding a spot. People arent arguing for his selection based on current performance, they want him selected on promise. But again, im not against his selection im just trying to build context as to why he may not be selected at this time. Not being selected round 9 of his first afl season his hardly going to be a detriment to his afl career.
Can see the angle you’re coming from. I’m not concerned yet, think he needed a freshen up but don’t want him out of the side for too long.

Don’t forget - when played in preferred position, he did get 25 touches in the internal trial, and 15 in a half vs reigning premiers Brisbane (no mean feat, regardless of the fact he was sub).

I’m confident he’ll shine but would love to see him get a block of games (without being sub) in the midfield soon when he’s refreshed and ready to go.

Quicker we get him to 50 games the better

It's hilarious you said that my narrative needs work.

Then you dropped off 2 of the 5 examples I used because Bont and Smith played a ton in their first year.

Then your insinuation that Butters, Serong, and Petracca were managed is just B.S.

Petracca wasn't managed in his first season. He did his ACL in feb of 2015 and missed the entire season. He then got to fitness by Round 6 and played every single game in year 2.

Serong had a debut year in 2020 (covid year) and after missing the first few weeks played the last 14 games in a row.

Butters played 19 of 22 games including the first 19 of 20 games.

After this round (Round 9) Sid will officially played in 7 games, with only 2 full games. Thats on track to play around 5 or 6 first games in his first year.

I looked across a lot of the top 5 pick midfielders that went on to be guns and they usually play 15 to 20 games in their first season and every game (injury permitting) in their second.

When you take a top midfielder there has to be a plan in place to make them a key component of the side almost immediately

He is and going very well too, no surprise given he captained the Northern Knights and played all his junior footy as their lead midfielder and polled well in the Morrish Medal in his top age year.

I actually sat near Hamish at Mars Stadium when the Knights played the Ballarat Rebels that year and Lachie was the Knights best that day playing midfield against a Rebels midfield of Hugh McCluggage, Jarrod Berry and Willem Drew.

I'd hazard a guess his name would have have been entered in Hamish's notes from that game.

Lachie as a midfielder especially at boundary stoppages always hits the contest at speed.
What advantage is there to that for the future?

I don't know what it looks like now, but I remember looking closer at this around ten years ago, and finding that actually, Showdown results correlate more closely with ladder position than the competition average.

Now, whether the margins are smaller than average, I'm not sure.

WTF are you on about?

There is one consistency and that’s been failure to win a flag.

As for your last paragraph, how is wanting a rebuild and criticising how we are handling some of our young players in that rebuild crying about what we always wanted? It’s a moronic statement.
Half of you all think that if only the club listened to you, a premiership would just some how happen...

I recall us having a red hot crack in 2017.
Then the people involved in the ill fated camp were ousted.

We cleaned out a lot of players and started from zero....

Then with that squad the AFL and media hung the club out to dry for 3 years over the Camp and the Covid Camp incident.

But yep a Premiership is just going to happen because Bigfooty posters say Player X should play...

Assuming we don't mess Draper around in the SANFL for the next two months, he is still hopefully on track to play 15-20 games this year.

Of course, there's "games" and then there's "one quarter at a time" sub games...

Geez mate Joe Berry would be a massive in for us and our list, potentially an AA small forward that is very capable for squirts in the midfield.

No way in a million years would he make our side at the moment - is that what you meant "a massive in for us"?

I had him in the 'dunno, bit early to tell, would you trade for him at the end of year" - you had "and our list" - so sounds like we agree on that part, could become a good player down the track.

Right and wrong.

He does need to come in. It DOES matter where, he needs quality midfield minutes. I am so sick of the graveyard half forward spot that our elite young mids are forced into to earn their stripes.

Imagine playing 12-14 years of footy being the best mid and then getting dropped at AFL level because you're struggling in an unnatural position. It's a wonder our young mids struggle to come on, we coach it out of them.

Not really.

Plenty of midfielders dont get quality midfield minutes and transition through other spots.

Would be perfectly fine having Draper on a wing or HBF.

Most important thing is gametime at AFL level.

How does that relate to my post? You said we are crying for a rebuild and can’t handle the rebuild, this was your response to us wanting Draper to play more games.

You’re all over the place

That’s a more charitable assessment than the time I heard someone describe Ivan Milat as “troubled”.

Not with rachelle and rankine in the side. He might get on the interchange if he lucky but probably not with his current experience. We could do with another quality small though.

Lalor is a midfielder than can go forward and hit the scoreboard in bunches, the only reason he played so much forward in his draft year and not midfield was he was recovering from a hip/groin/quad and foot issues/fitness and had virtually no pre-season and didn't play until after the half way mark of the CTL season. Added to thay he'd never, ever done a decent preseason due to his cricket commitments with Geelong Grammar and State representation with Vic Country. He might be playing mostly forward now but I'm sure that's only a fitness deal right now, the end game will be midfield without a single doubt.

Never heard that before

I'm bloody sure we would trade for him at the end of the year if he became available.
It's hard to find a fault in his skillset, high end footy smarts, dual sided kick , a left footed laser boot that can hit targets short or long, kicks goals off either foot, good burst of pace, good endurance and very good overhead for his size, he's going to be one of the premier small forwards in the game, and like Toby Greene also capable of stints in the middfield.
