Roast The SANFL Development Graveyard: Where careers go to die

I think it's another symptom of the wider club disinterest in winning. If winning stops being important, playing well stops being important. They start to consider themselves just a reserves side, who cares? Just go through the motions.

If you don't wake up in the morning and piss excellence at every level of your club, you'll never be successful. Under Koch, this is Port Adelaide. Being good isn't important.

How proud is the community though!
I'm sure they're all quality people though.

The club reeks of thin skinned, Beta type males who couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag. The cull at seasons end needs to run deep, with Koch, & Hinkley being the first ones escorted off the premises, followed by every other free loading parasite that has enabled this losing culture to permeate throughout the club for so long.

The main problem with the SANFL team at the moment is the age of the team. 10 players out of 22 today were either 1st or 2nd year players. Only 9 players with any regular senior experience (and some of them are borderline SANFL standard)

They treat them as trial games and if you play poorly there is no way you are getting dropped or being replaced by a top up player.

My memory of Lobbe is that he talked good, and always rucked hitting the ball forward to his feet.

He wasn't too bad till his legs were taken out from under him and he fell on his back.

I just cannot see him being innovative nor playing aggressively and with flare.

Pure vanilla when we want chilli.

Nice guy, very, but not who we want as Head of Development.

Lobbe is Head of Development??? I thought he was our ruck coach and that was bad enough but this news has me gobsmacked

Matthew Lobbe, Head of Development. Cam Sutcliffe, Captain of Port Adelaide SANFL.
You'd literally think it was a joke.
Development coaches should be rookie listers who made something of themselves.

Not first round draft picks who failed to live up to expectations.

Thats why if we join the VFL or national reserves comp we sign the 10 best players we can, no restrictions, and they play if they are good enough and the AFL players who arent up it, then they have a rest. Keep the competitive tension up high.

At the moment we cant sign the top 40 players at each of the 8 sanfl clubs, so we are umcomperitive with apart from Suttcliffe we have arguably the 321st best footballer in the state outside the afl system, as our 2nd top up player.

If you dont play to win at all costs, you drift and malaise sets in.

2019 make a GF
2020 covid no AFL sides in the Sanfl
2021 covid interuptions continue
2022 lots of injuries and biggest loss ever in our Sanfl A grade history.
2023 Almost at full strength few injuries to the best 22, and we struggle.

Covid sets in and we seem to have taken a who gives a stuff attitude to winning in the Sanfl, its all too hard and things are too stacked against us anyway attitude.

Remember the Choco/Bucky years when Power players were scattered throughout the SANFL clubs.
There was a period of time when whoever the Maggies played, we'd call up an opposition power player for the AFL emergency.

It was a win at all costs and all levels attitude.

I'd love to do a full review of our list management over the last period, to confirm this, but definitely feels like we've made some mistakes and are feeling it. A lot of good has been done, but also a few bad moves.

RIght now if our squad was holding Dougal and Ladhams, they'd both be best 22, both are entering their prime years, and we wouldn't have a squad filled with so many speculative late draft pick kids. We gave Ladhams away and Dougal I'm pretty sure we got Williams for who still looks unlikely to make it long term.

We've also cut too hard in our delistings in last few years. It seems like a great idea to just cut those that won't make the grade, but you have to do it with balance. Picking up too many kids, with shitty deep draft picks does not end well. To develop they need to be playing in a more competitive side where they are given the opportunity to excel in the contest. Instead the weak lineup we have exposes our better players to needing to lift to a level they just aren't capable of.

Jackson - 2021 4th round pick, unlikely to ever play AFL and would be playing reserves for North.
Scully - A 2022 4th round KPP, extremely raw, would be playing SANFL reserves if lucky at West.
McCallum - Our highest pick of the developing crop, a semi-tall, bit O'Shea or Pettigrew like, that was end of 2nd round, and still is years away from AFL. Would play reserves elsewhere, maybe senior footy.
Marshall - Literally the last pick in the 2022 draft. Would be playing reserves at best at the Panthers.
Visentini - 2021 4th round pick, a good kid, but years away from AFL. Certainly SANFL reserves and even senior capable.
Barkla - Cat B rookie, would be lucky to be playing reserves at the Eagles.

So we have 6 players in our side weekly that are literally a liability right now. Promising futures or not, we're carrying a third of a team that's not good enough. That are super deep, useless picks that we've filled out list with.

On top of that, today we fielded 3 ruckmen. None of which contain the mobility to play any role other than ruck effectively.

Then on top of that we Nick Moore who is a good trier, but lacks polish, then we have an array of amateur league players filling gaps. Francou and Hagan are 18 year old kids that weren't drafted, they're not even deep draft, they weren't drafted.

So now we're talking at least 8 super young, largely ineffectual kids, that are in no way up to the level and ultimately are bringing the side down.

Our best players are Burgoyne, Mead, Bonner and Dumont. 2 of those again juniors.

Then you have Sinn who just doesn't seem to be coming on, Lachie Jones who just desperately needs some continuity in a position, and Clurey who is cooked now.

We've got issues everywhere because our list balance is absolutely ****ed. We have ok immediate depth, but way too many deep draft picks filling the list.

We CANT afford to keep going to the draft and picking up a stack of pick 50 players, because they won't develop in this environment. We desperately need to pick up some free agents, and/or find some mature age players worth a crack. We certainly can't afford to cut so deep when again our first pick looks like it'll be high 30s.

It wouldn't matter what competition we play in, the reasons for what we are and how we're going has nothing at all to do with playing in the SANFL.

I agree with this. We know the sanfl rules gives us performance problems but currently, and for the past 5 seasons, our problems are mostly our club's fault. Last season was the wake-up call for the club to make changes to multiple leaderships, but it didn't, and by not doing so it has solidified an unaccountable mindset into this club. The club looked at 2022 as a Kochie aberration extending from the 2021 preliminary. This uncountability begins with the club's lack of action on Hinkley's end of 2021 season disappearance, and it filters throughout the club.

*, the club believes it is on the right track! Just ask any of the important figures in our club.

Yea you’ve nailed it here.

Essentially a third of the list are speculative junior AFL players. That’s fine if you have a strong core, which we don’t. And why I asked the question is this comp allowing us to develop as we need. Many of these guys would be better served running around in the reserves to get up to speed first

We desperately need to solve this issue. I believe it is the biggest issue facing the club at the moment. And that starts with ******* off most of the staff involved with the SANFL side and starting again.

The title scared me a bit, but your OP is spot on!

This is not only in the SANFL, unfortunately. It's just easier to see there (but it's also easier to make excuses for it).

I think some of this is the reality of being at the back end of a rebuild. We’ve brought in a lot of high picks since 2018 and most of those are already key players in the AFL side.

Absolutely critical we improve our depth over the next year or 2. Some of that will be organic if the guys you mentioned develop and stay on the list. Some of it will need to be through trade, free agency and mature aged picks.

I feel like our list management team are well aware of that, hence Rioli, Evans and flirting with Jack Graham last year.
