Which team out of Adelaide, North and Hawthorn has the better youth? Part 2

I'm as prone as anyone to falling into the trap and thinking that 2017 was just a couple years ago...but that's 7 years ago now, and 7 years without finals.

Every club in the league has turned over their list almost entirely since then. It's a pretty long time, albeit in our heads it doesn't feel that long ago. LDU was still running around for the Stingrays at that point for instance.

I guess what I'm saying is North & Hawthorn might not be as competitive as the Crows, but you can read the names and watch them play and see a core building.

LDU, Sheezel, Newcombe, Day, Wardlaw, MacDonald, Mackenzie, McKercher.

Plus both clubs have got the likes of Larkey & Lewis, who while a little older, you'd like to think they're still contributing when the climb comes.

It just feels like the Hawks & North have used their draft position to build a core, while the Crows have used their picks like they're putting the finishing touches on their list when they're not in a position to do so.

Admittedly, they where pretty unlucky with McAsey, and if he came good that would have helped...but guys like Rachele & Rankine are the cream, not the cake.

You don't invest high picks into flankers when you've barely got your spine together, and it looks like they've tried to rectify that with Curtin last year.

It just feels wrong for a club that's been out of the finals for 7 years to have a midfield of Laird, Crouch, Keays, & Dawson.

Those guys are in their prime, and where still made to looks average by a Geelong midfield full of kids and good-ordinary players outside of Danger.
That you think Keays plays midfield says everything about your understanding of Adelaide’s list

You need to fully clear the team then get at least 12 first rounders to build a core with 5, 6 blue chip players, usually in the middle. Keybacks, rucks can be obtained via trade and FA. Key fwd require to pay a lot of money and is hostage to the rest of the ground.

The adelaid situation is that it's caught in between 2 places, it will have a generational gap. They have tried to cherry pick the selections plus players here and there instead of focus purely on the draft for 3 years.

Truly is amazing how begging for handouts has normalized being a complete disaster.

One of Finnbar’s 8 first half marks.

Basically all contested. Absolutely dominant just learning footy and only 20 years old from a basketball background.

Sellers solid with 2 first half goals.

Wil Dawson 18 years of age with 5 intercept marks.

Comben with 8 marks in the first half down back. Moving well, not a great defensive game.

Some nice things from Goad as well.

Can only imagine the responses in here if Hawks/Crows posters started posting snips from a half of seconds footy.

Well Mr Lad, we have been talking about norths lack of key position players haven’t we.

Seems relevant to that discussion doesn’t it.

What does your twitter mate say about it?
Doing something in a half of seconds footy against the bottom side isn’t really notable.

Expected to see North 10 goals up with this domination instead of 5 points

Really would be querying how you can spend 6 years out of finals and your midfield is Crouch, Dawson, Laird, Keays and O'Brien.
Ages 29, 27, 30, 27 and 29 by seasons end. That's an age bracket for a midfield at a contending club.

It's disgraceful. Cooked Sloane will be probably be rushed straight back in there as soon as he's got 50% of his vision back.

No, you don't.

Maybe if you're a genuine basketcase like North...but most clubs do not require 12 first round picks to build a core.

You've grossly mismanaged your list if so, and you're using Melbourne & Carlton as an example. Not exactly where you want to be taking inspiration.

Adelaide's problem hasn't been the amount of picks, it's been who they've picked. You substitute Jones & McAsey for Butters & Serong/Day and they'd be close to leading this thing...but hindsight is king.

Geelong, Hawthorn, Richmond & built dynasties without close to the amount of picks you're referencing. Collingwood & Geelong constantly contend without those picks, and until recently, West Coast where the same.

I really like what North are building...but let's not pretend like you've got the blueprint and have sorted things out yourselves.

This could have all been avoided - or finished years ago - if your club wasn't a shambles, and you're still a long way off yourselves.

Hawthorn started later. It shouldn't be this close, but through shrewd list management, development, and so on, they've caught up very quickly.
