WRFL Div 1 discussion 2022

One of the best players ever to grace the field in the wrfl has won the 2022 Deer Park Best & Fairest being Levi Greenwood. A better and fairer player you would not find anywhere. Despite the opinions of some the wrfl has been blessed by the recruits Deer Park have recruited to the wrfl over the years.
Quite true. The issue for Deer Park is this is the norm in the EDFL so what will differentiate them to be successful??

Particularly the Premier division 5 or 6 clubs can more than match them financially, have strong juniors and a strong history in the competition.

Yes can match them financially but they don’t draw the AFL names Deer Park do.

Besides Heath Shaw there aren’t really any big AFL names in Premier. Deer Park have had some huge names over the years.

Clubs have gone away from the big name afl players. Cost too much and very rarely put back into the club.
Clubs go for the younger VFL player who has 7-10 years left.

Was rookie listed at Essendon when he was a kid. Didn’t play a senior game. Stints at a couple VFL clubs then spent the bulk of his local footy career up at Mansfield. Coached Bacchus marsh past couple years.
Nephew of Peter German and the son of Craig German and nephew of Trevor German, both Oak Park legends . Super football pedigree and can play. Great get for Spotswood.

You obviously have never been involved in recruitment. One of the responses of potential recruits over the last few years is “nah why bother playing against Deer Park?”

The 7 straight flags didn’t not improve the competition and can’t say that hurt it either. Too many who have been around for a long time have spoken about the standard slipping gradually over the years.

Umpires have had it in for DP? Garbage.
WRFL umpires don't have it in for Deer Park...they're incompetent for every club.

Dreadful umpiring standards contribute to lowering the overall standard of the league, which is miles behind the EDFL.

Unfortunately umpires on the wrfl made some awful decisions .. as umpires do..their watching of the game especially the second umpire who is not near the game is ball watching as appossed to watching the game off the ball as well where holding and straggling tactics are employed

The non-officiating umpires are guilty of that in most leagues.

It's time to get the WRFL Umpires out of the inner west to make it easier for umpires, particularly young ones, to get them to training and to access better training and face to face coaching.

Getting younger people from Wyndham/ Pt.Cook to Seddon twice a week is not easy. Many young umpires from those areas do not get to training, do not get practical training or coaching and simply turn up to umpire each week. Hence at times, they lack umpiring skills.

Think they were offered facilities in Williams Landing several years ago and this would have helped. They are not the FDL Umpires anymore, they draw very few members from the Footscray areas.

To be fair, they do have “academy's” for beginner/junior umpires. The main one is held at Mackillop College in Werribee.

Think they have also branched out into once at Point Cook and one other location (I forget where) they also tried tap into CS area few years ago but it struggled to get numbers.

True re McKillop 1 day per week, but that was physical training but doubt there was coaching done there. Coaching develops the skills

Mid 30’s and that’s doesn’t matter in WRFL.
You’re saying it like I’m having a crack at him… not at all! Just seems like he’s been around for years so wasn’t sure how old he was. He’s been dominating for that long thought he would have been 40+
