Autopsy 8 point loss to Port

Maybe we've been too harsh on Matty Roberts (or I have). He actually only turned it over half as much as Chad (4 turnovers v 8). Chad meanwhile had the worst disposal efficiency of anyone on the ground - what's going on there??

Great games from Grundy, Rowbottom, Hayward, Francis and Heeney. McClean so close to a great game, just fluffed a few chances as did so many others.

At the end of the day we should have won with 7 more scoring shots. Just wasted so many opportunities inside 50
How can you say Heeney? He got 1 & 3 disposals in the second and third quarters. In the first and last year. But the other two he went missing and was one of our problems in that he WON'T EFFING CHASE.

Skill errors, poor composure and constant fumbles. Really unlike us and that continues to be the theme this season, so so costly.

Thought our contest work was much better, Grundy was massive. However the gulf in cleanliness in traffic was so costly. Butters would get a ground ball then they were out, as for us it seemed we'd fumble twice before getting a handpass out then rush a kick.

Carved up through transition on numerous occasions. Been a big issue this year alongside the missed tackles in def50. Was good to see the pressure and work rate ramp up, just our cohesion seems a complete mess.
You know we pot various players for their failings. McLean missing shots, Blakey missing shots. Melican dropping a chest mark to create a boundary throw Grundy missing the ball for the final port goal has got to be up there as equally embarrassing. But looking at individual moments will show everyone effing up at some point.

I just wonder whether this team has got to a stage where they’ve got to be 30 points down to release the pressure that they’re feeling. The energy levels in the last were great but where the eff was that before that ?

You're clueless mate. You keep banging the drum when Heeney is the only bloke keeping us afloat.

If he put up the same numbers across the game he'd have 30 and 4 with 15 contested, AND you want him to do the same defensive work as blokes not carrying anywhere near the same load. So if he's not prime GAJ he's not good enough.

Bad kicking is bad footy. Don't win games going at 30-40% conversion. Least we showed something in the last quarter. Reminds of the GWS final a few years back were we ran over them in the last but kicked like 1.6 to go down by a goal.
This was what I came to basically say. Bad basic skills is bad footy - not just the horrendous kicking for goal. But so many basic dropped marks, handballs missing blokes in space, handballs to blokes under immense pressure. We are our own worst enemies, and our skills are terrible at the moment.

I also like that Cox is willing to experiment, but it has to be within reason. We've all seen ample evidence to suggest McCartin is never going to be a forward at AFL level - stick him down back where he is comfortable and be done with it. We have other fill in options that can work - as Francis showed in the last, as Hamling has shown at VFL level playing as a forward.

Get players in their best positions and stick with them, not try and use a square peg in a square hole to suddenly fill a round hole elsewhere. It goes for a lot of the other blokes around the ground too - play them in their best positions, and stop trying to turn everyone into a Mr Fix it.

Blakey 0.3
Mclean 3 bad misses, Blakey 3 bad misses, 2 wild shots from Campbell in the last, Jordan missing straight in front, Both Warner's missing in the first half. Probably others I've forgotten as well. There were so many culprits in front of the sticks today.

Its basic footy skills and we suck at it.

Oh and what the actual f*** was the go with the condition of the SCG today? We haven't played there for what a month (has there been any events there recently) and the field was an absolute disgrace.

We have gone backwards on every line . If you shut down the corridor then . we are done .

The score looked respectable at the end but let’s be honest Port should have put us away by half time . Georgiadis on another day has 5 at half time .

Our lack of pressure is also alarming and considering we have always played with a goalkeeper watching teams get over the back so often is infuriating .

Not enough players want to dig in or take a tackle and be tough at the contest and too many blind tap ons or handballs out of the contest to the ground or opposition .

  • Appalling skills cost us....this is the 2nd game we should have won but we defeated ourselves. The basic fundamentals that are killing us....but mostly it's the weak as piss tackling, nail some of those they don't kick some of the goals they do...the tackling standard is so sub par it's not funny, ball always still gets out to opposition.
  • McCartin never again do I want to see him start forward, he isn't close to being one. Although a horrible decision (kick) he made as a defender may have cost us a game, after being under pressure by a horrible decision by Lloyd, who was put under pressure by a absolutely madness kick from Rampe....that's our down back leaders. Our Leadership in general is a problem, because, outside Heeney and maybe Grundy/Rowbottom, it's our leaders who are generally responsible for a lot of our simple **** ups.
  • That listless timid 1st qtr and a half torched us, similar to the trend of late last year, we have to fall too far behind to actually start playing football. It's conservative crap chip ball until then.
  • Roberts & Lloyd make a lot of simple mistakes trying to be clean and safe. The both of them together in the side stifle us at times. There's a real decision Cox needs to make there, it's a one or the other in the side situation. Can't have two players coming off the back and wings playing the same game as they do.
  • Grundy was the only winner the whole day. Francis when he came on was great and actually gave us some ****ing movement up forward - not sure how he'll go there week in, week out but looks a hell of a lot more likely as a forward than a McCartin/Hamling.
  • There were another group that were ok / had cameo moments - Heeney lifted massively late. Bice, Rowbottom solid. Blakey was ok, but his 2nd qtr misses were killers. McLean had an almost day, could've been a hero, played ok generally but ultimately you can't be missing some of the goals he did. Everyone outside of that group were pretty poor.

My Hawthorn supporting father texted me during the last quarter to say Warner isn't as good as he thinks he is.

I replied back that it is better than having an entire team that isn't as good as they think are.

Totally got the best of that little exchange. :thumbsu:
I think Chad might be out the door

The behinds are emblematic of the basic school boy errors, non leading, dopey handballs, zoning off etc etc

Not long until I get banned from the swans facebook page. Seriously, don't happy clap a shithouse performance like that, tell me I don't know what I'm talking about and to follow another team, when you are claiming that as a good effort and bemoaning the injured players not in out first grade side.

Some of our northern based fans are as dumb as the first half decision making of our players.

I keep meaning to comment - who the hell was opposing Grundy. Did they even play a ruck? Hayden McLean had more hitouts than anyone from Port.

Puts our performance in an even harsher light. Clearance stats (and hitouts) count for a fair bit less tonight unless you were playing for Port.

I hate those happy clapper fans

Oh and cox needs to complain about the Heeney treatment, held all ****en day and gets nothing, barely got a reluctant whistle his way late.

also hold senior guys to account. Not just drop Hanily

Chad never helps himself because he will always try to take the game on, even when it isn't there to take on, and will try for a lot of 'hollywood' moments. He needs to remember the K.I.S.S principle more often than not. Corey had a couple of similar moments today as well.

I don't mind half backs etc that give it away a bit if they are getting plenty of the pill. I actually think there is cohesion starting to build between Roberts/Bice/Blakey, and we will see some really good things from that group. Roberts has always been a bit iffy with ball use, but you don't mind it so much to some degree. But we've got too many turnover merchants at the moment in all parts of the ground.

They had us at arms length all day, but we probably should've won it in the end. Dominated a majority of the last but couldn't convert to save ourselves. McLean had a stinker in front of goal.

I’ve been in the pick Francis camp for a while. He’s a big unit and he leads at the ball. He doesn’t strike me as fast enough to play in the backline but he does do good things forward of the ball

I agree he's not fast and I don't know whether he's better forward or back but can't agree that he can't play backline. He is an absolutely commanding interceptor of aerial balls and a strong rebounder too, kicking with depth and precision.

The knocks on Frang are his competitiveness and contest and ability to lockdown on an opponent. In other words it's all between the ears and he has the skills.

Jordan Sweet lead hitouts with 39

They probably only watched the last quarter any contending side would of had us down by 60 at the break we were that bad.

Icing on the cake was the coaching... McCartin stubbornly persisted with forward then watching us repeatedly kick to Ratugolea

I don't bother with the facebook groups anymore unless I'm in a proper mood to troll. Those happy clapper fans can go and get f***** lol, drive me to derision.

Those same idiots were on there after the grand final last year, 2 minutes after we were humiliated having a go at anyone that dare criticise the shite dished up.

You can blame whoever, but the whole playing group coaches and players have to accept that this performance was lazy and directionless. We travel to the gold coast next week, and they are very much improved , and i honestly think that they will beat us, we hve not had a great record at this stadium.
