Fact is, if pick 2 remains pick 2, we’re not getting access to the second best kid in the country - because of the academy system we’re getting access to the third. And so on through the draft.

The idea that these picks were never available to us is fine in theory - in practice we are moved back in the talent pool. Unless, of course, you believe the myth that kids of this calibre would never have taken up the sport without the academy.

Well yeah the mechanisms of academies are a completely different discussion. But for the purposes of the draft pool as it stands, only compensation picks are actually affecting our draft position in regards to the players available to us. We want academy players to go as high as possible, as it is likely the Dogs, Swans will gather picks in the 30s and 40s to match with, meaning we'll have a better chance of picking up a slider or two later in the draft.

LOL..It’s Hollands. If he’s no good, it’ll be Holland...or Hollandss....

Wonder what Richmond fans called them when they had Ben Holland and Ben Hollands.

Academy picks don't affect us. If anything academy players going high benefits us later in the draft.

Not when picking at the pointy end

How does it affect us at the pointy end? Or is this more of a gripe with the academies in the first place?

The latter

f*n Bears giving a huge contract to an injured mule

Can't wait for the 1.37 and 53 out on the fulls he will be kicking next year in the humid/wet conditions in QLD there. They thought they had conversion problems this year...

This guy gets it.

Started the day with pick nine now it’s 11 likely 12 by end of the weekend and we haven’t done anything

Geelong would basically be devaluing every one of their first round picks by a place with that deal.

So Essendon get pick 7 for Daniher, GWS will likely get a top ten for Cameron, and we look like ending up with something in the 30s for Brown.
Remember when people were justifying the trade by saying "we'll only do it if we get the best deal for the club." Or "we need to make the gutsy call because he's got trade currency". How's that working out now?
