The Championships are upon us again and seeing as qualifying has started thought we might as well get this thread going.

All things considered it is looking like an interesting tournament in both draws. Federer is in good form again and will definitely be looking to win here again. Nadal will be looking to go back to back, while a lot of eyes will be on Djokovic to see if he can continue his incredible form this year. As always there will be strong media interest in the UK in Murray. Berdych has final points to defend. but has not been in the best form so doubt he will make it that far again. Will one of the big hitters in Del Po, Soderling, Troicki make a surprise semi? As has been the case for the last few years, the top 4 players will be the players to watch and I'm sure one of them will be holding the trophy at the end. Looking forward to the draw to see what side Fed falls on.

The sisters are back and even though she hasn't played a tournament in a year, Serena is favourite to win the tournament. It really shows the lack of a real number 1 player at the moment. Wozniacki will probably do reasonably well, but not win, Zvonereva has final points to defend, it is not Kim's best surface and she has hardly played, can't see Schiavone doing much here. But the one to watch for me is Li Na. She has made 2 QF previously at Wimbledon, but she is playing the best tennis of her career and I expect her to do good things here. You can also never rule out Venus, who has won I think 5 titles at SW19. She has also been out a while, but if she can find her serve and forehand, she will be hard to beat.

What does everyone think about the seedings for the women? I think that Venus and Serena will get good seedings, most likely in the top 16.

Looking at the Australian contingent, for the first time that I can ever recall, we do not have a male inside the top 100. However Lleyton loves this tournament and if he can get a reasonable draw, could easily make a 4th round. He is our only direct entry into the tournament, but we have a number of players who are a good chance to make the main draw playing in qualifying now. Stosur and Gajdisova are our 2 best chances to make it through a few rounds, but we cannot rely on either to do that well. Stosur lost in the first round here last year so at least she has no pressure of defending points. But she has never made it past the 3rd round on the grass and that trend will probably continue this year.

Winners in the first round of qualifying in the mens: Tomic, Ebden, Guccione, Matosevic, Jones

Losers in the first round: Luczak, Ball, Lemke, Millman

It looks like we will also have some fantastic coverage this year. Fox Sports are sending a big team over to cover the tournament so expect very good coverage from them. Channel 7 are the new kids on the block for Wimbledon coverage and will be showing tennis on the digital channel, 72, as well as their main channel.

Cannot wait for Monday.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

Great stuff pepsi. I think your call of Li Na is good, it’s just whether she can mentally back up from the high of the French. Grass suits her game though and I think she’s a big shot to again reach the final. I’d also watch out for Kvitova, reached the Semi’s last year, if she’s striking the ball cleanly she could match that effort.

I love this time of year, nothing beats it. As usual, we’ve had the usual Wimbledon specials on Fox Sports, it really adds to the anticipation and excitement. Rivalries, record breakers, Borg vs McEnroe, Sampras vs Federer, as well as three interesting docos on ESPN. For anyone interested, on Sunday morning 7TWO have the following scheduled (SA time):

9:55: The Wimbledon Film
11:00: Spirit of Wimbledon
11:30: Wimbledon Preview

Same docos every year, yet every year I can't get enough of them.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

So pumped for Monday. Tonight in quallies Guccionie and Matosevic play each other in final round of quallies which is best of 5 sets. Im expecting Guccionie to take that one. Tomic also plays Lisnard from Monaco Tomic should be able to get through that one.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

LOL Isner Vs Mahut round one again. Hewitt has Nishikori first up.

lol now that is funny. Very tough for Hewitt first up. Nishikori is playing the semis in the Netherlands tournament so is in some good form. Unless Hewitt can get his body right in time I see a lost first up here.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

Absolute farce. I read somehwere that since 2008 it's been the same way every time but ONE. ONE!!! I mean it's gotta be rigged, you can't tell me otherwise.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

I don't see the problem. 1 Nadal 2 Djokovic 3 Federer 4 Murray.
Surely 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 is the fairest way to do it?

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

Subbed. Too bad these threads generally mix both mens and womens discussion.

Yeah, nothing pisses me off when people talk about the women's draw at Wimbledon in the Wimbledon thread.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

How big does the Wimbledon thread usually get?

I remember thinking during the AO that due to the thousands of posts, it probably wouldn't have hurt to have separate men's and women's threads*. But the FO thread was a pretty manageable size I thought.

*No back seat moderating.

Last year we had Wimbledon week one then Wimbledon week two.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

^It's because women's tennis is awful. Just awful.

Well you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to. Not to mention we don't have any decent men right now so...

I think for AO there was a week 1 and week 2 thread, wasn't there?

EDIT: Just looking at Lleyton's draw, even if he gets up against Nishikori (who hasn't won a match at Wimby I'm pretty sure), he'll most likely face Soderling so that'll be the end of that.
Tomic to play R3 quallies tonight as well.

Re: 2011 Wimbledon

We don't have any decent men right now? Three future hall of famers as top three in the world don't warrant 'decent' status?

Who do people think would win in a potential semi between Djokovic and Murray on grass. If that eventuates, that's the match I'm looking forward to the most as a neutral.

Uhh Djokovic would finish him in 3.

Murray isn't even close to the "big 3"

He/she was talking Australian men, I'm guessing.

Matosevic through in five over Guccione while Tomic leads 6-1, 4-4 against Lisnard. There's some decent spots for qualifiers in this draw - you'd be hoping for something like Chela, the all-Q showdown and then Wawrinka in section 3, or Mello in section 8.
