Seems strange that the only people who seem to be saying we should have taken DGB over McDonald are those on Big Footy. Every media EXPERT (who should know a lot more than we do) have stated that "we got a steal in McDonald. Don't know how he fell through to 4."
For all those who are hanging their opinion on the one game they played against each other this year where DBG had the better of him - just think of this:
For those who remember the game in the 90s there was a great defender in Glenn Jackovich. At the same time there was a great CHF in Wayne Carey. Back in these days they played one on one - no rubbish team defence we have to put up with today.
Quite regularly, Jackovich had the better of Carey yet if you were a recruiter and had the choice of the two, who would you take?
Taking McDonald instead of DGB was a no brainer. Key forwards are the most difficult of all players to find.
Granted, he will take a few years before we see the best of him as he needs to gain body strength, but so be it.

Not true. Twomey asked 12 AFL recruiters who they would have taken at pick one (anonymously of course) and the answers were

DGB - 4.5
McDonald - 4
Tilthorpe - 3
Hollands - 0.5

I don't think there is any coincidence in this.

Yep I am very happy. Obviously I saw our midfield as our biggest priority and saw Phillips as the best prospect in the pool, so that would've been the dream overlap. However we could never lose if we improved our forward stocks either. Even Thilthorpe who I was a fan of, I wouldn't have been convinced that he would help our scoring issues given he is more of a CHF. So I'm stoked we have McDonald, and I think you're right that we should try and lock him down long-term, as key forwards tend to go walkabouts!

When you look at this drat, there were 7 very capable midfielders taken in the first 13 selections. Fair to say, we will pick up a very handy mid next year. We may even use our number 1 pick to trade for one. Getting McDonald now was a godsend.

Key forwards take a few years before they become anything reliable. Going to be a lot of disappointed fans in the next couple years complaining about McDonald not delivering.

I'd like to thank North's new boss who told them to stock up on mids. And I'd like to thank Will Philips for being good enough. I'd also like to thank the trades for pick 2 not being up to scratch and North being gun shy and not pulling the trigger.

A couple articles linked us to Philips right after North said pick 2 was on the table. Hard to think it was a coincidence

I'm sure they perused our draft thread and got a little gun shy. Who knows it may have even persuaded them to draft Philips although I'm fairly sure North's recruiting team are more professional than to take their cues from the Swans bigfooty forum. Only fairly certain.

I can easily believe that. Parker is a very strong mark for his size and a reliable kick at goal too. He would be a tough opponent for any defender or unfortunate midfielder that is stuck on him in the forward line.

When the time comes, I think Parker could definitely play out his career up forward. He is very dangerous up there. That ability will prolong his career. For the time being though I think we need him more in the middle.

How on earth can you possibly say that Parker is not reliable. That is just ridiculous and one of the worst comments you have made here imo. I mean he did finish in the top 5 in this year's brownlow.

So he gets okay clearance numbers, but those numbers don't translate into inside 50's. Most the top inside midfielders also rank very highly on inside 50 numbers as well. Parker doesn't, meaning even when he gets a clearance it isn't particularly damaging.

And most of these years without a ruck.

Yeah me too. It's quite funny that for all the talk of a COVID-impacted year, the first half a dozen picks panned out pretty much how I reckon it'd go in a normal year. Two of the three kids regarded as the top 3 at the start of the year (Ugle-Hagan and Phillips) went top 3 despite no footy; a kid with an ACL (Hollands) ended up sliding; Thilthorpe, who was higher regarded than the two WAFL boys at the start of this year, was picked before them; and a Northern Academy lad (Campbell) was bid on early in the draft. It's like the season being totally compromised ended up having very little impact on how the clubs used their high picks.

How? As a midfielder I think Parker would be in the second All Australian team, as an inside midfielder, he would be in the 7th All Australian team. I don't think that is super controversial.

It isn't all that surprising. Changes in the anticipated draft order from the previous year to the year of the draft happen because of new information that comes to light in the draft year. When next to no football is played in the draft year that means there is little new information, so the earlier consensus does not get changed much.

Correct, I wasn't surprised, especially considering I rated Phillips and Thilthorpe above McDonald & DGB, despite having less exposed form. I just found it interesting that that exposed form didn't do much to change the expected order.

So while not every player on that list is an inside midfielder, a lot of them are, and many of them the best inside mids in the competition.

For the record, Parker is a champion... very, very consistent player imo...

Without Parker as a dominant midfielder (and player) many other players would not even perform as well. He sets the tone. Without him is like taking Rampe out of the backline or Buddy out of the forwards.
