GWS
Pre-season is almost over and the main event about to start. For both GWS and their opponents in round 1, 2023 is an important year as both teams look to bounce back from disappointing seasons in 2022. Putting last year behind us, there's plenty to look forward to for Giants fans. Adam Kingsley has come in with a new gameplan that is looking to reignite a running game for the Giants, and by the evidence of the sole pre-season game against the Suns, there are exciting times to look forward to. While it might not quite be the Orange Tsunami of yesteryear, it certainly was at least an "orange rush" against a team that is strongly tipped to press for the 8 this year. And while pre-season form is somewhat of a mirage, the pressure applied by our midfield, the run from both halfback and midfield on turnovers certainly ramps up expectations that GWS will perform much better this year than last.

The pre-season signings of midfield guns Tom Green and Finn Callaghan - who have both been in scintillating form during pre-season - should whet supporters' appetites for the games ahead. Steven Coniglio and Josh Kelly, with the weight of leadership removed from their shoulders, have also been in excellent form on both training paddock and pre-season ground. The tall defence probably only has a question around who plays second fiddle to All-Australian Sam Taylor, while the running combination of Lachies Whitfield & Ash plus Isaac Cumming has won plaudits from Coach Kingsley. Injuries have unfortunately disrupted the forward line, with gun smalls dropping off, but Jesse Hogan, Harry Himmelberg (no longer Thor!) and Jake Riccardi proved themselves a worthy trio against Gold Coast. Exciting 2022 No 1 draft pick Aaron Cadman awaits in the wings, but is likely to remain there a little longer.

Overall, I expect the team that ran out against Gold Coast will be largely the team for round 1. Kingsley had Binga Daniels as unlikely to make round 1, so it's probably just the interchange bench to be settled. I'm tipping:

B: Connor Idun, Sam Taylor, Isaac Cumming
HB: Lachie Whitfield, Nick Haynes, Lachie Ash
C: Finn Callaghan, Harry Perryman, Jacob Wehr
HF: Josh Kelly, Jake Riccardi, James Peatling
F: Toby Greene (c), Harry Himmelberg, Jesse Hogan
R: Brayden Preuss, Tom Green, Stephen Coniglio
IC: Leek Aleer, Callan Ward, Conor Stone, Adam Kennedy.
Sub: Xavier O'Halloran

I am excited for this game, and indeed for the whole year. I hope that we can make a good start by beating the Crows, to gain confidence and hopefully frighten the competition.

No Toby ;)
Easy to overlook the obvious sometimes...
o_O

I even went down the list of players from yesterday's game to double check!!

OK, so probably Dan Lloyd or James Peatling to drop out - I've kept Peatling and left out Lloyd in the revised team; but could easily be the opposite way round. If Binga was fit, probably neither makes the side.

We should rename this the clash of potential. Both fan bases would be bullish on their prospects this year and looking at the potential of their team and how it shapes on paper to evidence that.

Personally I think we have it on them with our def and they have it on us in the forward line

One would expect the midfield is where the game will be won. I doubt Adelaide have the midfield depth to go the distance with us.

What I lived most about saturdays game was the turnover game we played. We played with a pressure that made it hard to score against and move the ball. Admittedly the suns were missing key movers in the middle

Daniels?

I'd see the limited game time against Suns as an indication that Flynn isn't in the picture as second ruck - AK will use HH and Riccardi to pinch hit. Could be wrong, of course.
Im not sure this is cause and effect, but we started losing he clearences when he came on.

The market has us as $1.64 favourites vs Adelaide $2.26. Fair enough given it’s our home game, and our pre-season form against Gold Coast.

Or dispose of it cleanly.
I think he's really going to struggle with youth like Rowston ready to find opportunity. For a first year player Rowston looks physically ready to go and super aggressive.
Unpopular opinion, I think XOH perceived poor disposal is unfair.
He doesn't hit amazing kicks going inside 50 or anything, on a wing he was forced to do that a bit. But he is decent enough of finding a player. In tight he is good enough as well.

I don't think he is a natural winger, but his 2 way running is excellent which makes him serviceable in the role.
In and under he is pretty good.

I think he is a very useful player at the edge of your 22. His effort is excellent.

On Saturday, he was good, lot of good touches and lots of pressure applied.
He'll be tough to leave out this week.

I think he is the type of player that might thrive under the new game plan.

Different type of player to castagna but role players within a strong system can thrive despite skill limitations

I think so too.
he applied a stack of pressure, him and Perrymen both did a number of things you dont get a stat for that ended up winning us the ball. That might be important with this game style.
Time will tell.

Look. I'd love for XO to find his rhythm but from what I've seen over the last two years and how he only JUST got a contract ...make me think he's not a long term role player for us.
Happy to be wrong but I've watched his kicking and handballing live and it's not up to scratch.
I agree he will play round 1 after that preseason game but by the end of the year I think he will be depth
