We're entering a very busy period on this board with the draft and player movement periods fast approaching.

Us board mods have a lot on our plates and whilst we do not want to, we are not going to hesitate to infract or hand out board bans for repeat offenders. Please do not force our hands here.

Thank you.

I thought there was always going to be a delay with the compensation.

After the Doedee comp, you'd expect McKay, which is valued to be a much more expensive deal, to go Pick 3.

North's pressers seem like its closer than they expected, but surely Essendon would rather trigger the better compo to make it a done deal? That's how most of these deals work

Just got told that they were literally $5k per year short in guaranteed money due to a rounding error by brad Scotts. So the AFL gave them a mulligan but had run out of white by out to amend the deal. Problem was they couldn’t find any from the offical afl stationary sponsor, so by tomorrow it will be fixed and ready to go.

Seems legit, given he wouldnt know the required number given he wouldnt know all the salaries used in the made-up formula.

A chance that 830k figure may not be base salary?

Seems a very strange delay otherwise, unless the AFL are intentionally trying to maximise the anticipation (very possible).

Immediate reaction was that it didn’t trigger and North are now faced with the choice of pick 19 or McKay which is a little more 50/50. Despite claiming they’d match anything outside band 1 they’d be negligent not to sit down and discuss it thoroughly.

You’d have thought if it triggered pick 3 they would have signed off on it immediately but the silence is deafening (unless the AFL are managing the timing for whatever reason).

It is not base salary.

Mistake is deliberate and gives North a look at contract and know Dodo aint bluffing. If North wants a shot a pick 1, then agree to trade 2/3 for 8+F1 and mistake will get corrected.

After all it was only a rounding error. LMAO.

Every chance. But there's also every chance that it's a delay brought about by a simple "meh, it's complicated let's look at it tomorrow".

Twomey expects it to be pick 3, and I find he's usually right.

This passes the smell test for me & is the working theory I am using to explain the delay in a making a decision on contract that was agreed on more than a week back.

This works too but have a hard time believing Essendon would risk not getting their man. Maybe there is a handshake deal to let McKay pass through to Dodo in PSD. Can't see anyone else picking McKay at that inflated contract terms.
Except Hawthorn.

Who offered more.

Given the other free agency compensation doled out do far I would be very surprised if they don't get pick 3. Essendon would have to have readjusted their offer after other compensation was announced to trigger band 2 instead of band 1.

I agree, it's been crazy

The motivation is pretty obvious for Essendon.

Norths compo Pick would push Essendon down and out of the drafts top tier of players. That’s a pretty big deal especially if they hope to try and target a specific type of player in that top tier. (Ie Zane Dursma)

Probably asked North to collude with them and when North said No we won’t trade with ya for pick 8 + whatever, Essendon said screw this we’ll go scortched earth and then you only get pick 19 for McKay.

It’s the exact petty incompetence that typically happens with Essendon. Only problem is it’s exposing the incompetence and unfairness of the AFLs compo system and now every club is very unhappy. So now the AFL have to try and fix it within their own framework and are tying themselves in knots

wut?

If EFC didn't offer a band 1 contract and instead McKay walked to Hawthorn or Sydney on a band 1 contract then EFC still get pushed back.

So it was;

North get Band 1 compo, EFC's first gets pushed back but have McKay or North get Band 1 compo, EFC's first gets pushed back and get nothing.

Once both Hawthorn and Sydney were offering band 1 level contracts it forced Essendon to offer money that should also attract band 1 compo. Unless of course Essendon structure it in a way that McKay gets his money but it isn't 'guaranteed' for the purpose of compo picks in which case EFC get McKay and don't get their first pushed back. Which is smart business if they manage it.

EFC's job is to act in the best interests of EFC. Not North. Not the AFL.

'Petty incompetence' is a really weird read on it.
