Be terrific if this came off :

Traditional AFL rivals Richmond and Carlton are each pitching for multimillion-dollar government support to transform their old home grounds at Punt Road and Princes Park.

The Tigers and the Blues have submitted blueprints to the Victorian Government in a move that could form part of Premier Daniel Andrews' 2018 election strategy, along with a largely taxpayer-funded $300 million upgrade of Etihad Stadium.

From the same article :

And in a separate development, the AFL has begun detailed research into the future of its new national women's league, with Carlton's Ikon Park emerging as the proposed home of AFLW, potentially boasting an upgraded 20,000 to 25,000-seat stadium, with 70 per cent of that being undercover.

The prospect of Carlton's old home again hosting AFL games remains on the table.

This is some very exciting news, the sort of stuff that should give our supporters a reason to become members.

I'm sorry to be the one to say this but there is next to no chance an AFL game for points will be played at Princes Park again

Never say never !!!

With a major upgrade, there is absolutely no reason why Princes Park cannot host some Carlton home games against the lower drawing interstate clubs.

Even our games against GWS and Gold Coast this year nearly drew 25,000 and this is while we are a bottom 4 club. In 2020 when we are hopefully a contender again, we can easily expect 35,000 at these games.

No way the AFL would accept a stadium with a capacity of less than 35,000. Kardinia Park is the absolute minimum of acceptable standards for an AFL ground.

Reach a deal with the Carlton cricket club and develop oval 2 into a 25-35k seat stadium, or go for 20k seats and 20k standing.

If they are proposing AFLW games being undercover, then there is going to be a roof and there is now way we would get permission to enclose and roof over a heritage listed structure.

Princes Park has no train line.

There is a new Metro station, "Arden" being built as part of Dan Andrews' pork-barrelling - a stone's throw away from a former VFL venue. North Melboune's Arden St makes perfect sense for train and tram passengers.

Not sure who suggested, but I'm fully on board with the idea of playing one or two Monday night 'marquee' games at PP every year.

Think about it... you would only need 22,000 people to fill the place.

In order to get spot, only members would be offered a seat (raising the incentive to join up), but they'd need to pay a further $5 the week leading up to the match to reserve a physical seat in order to ensure a packed house.

You'd actually have an AFL venue packed to the rafters with passionate fans - a sight to behold both at the ground or on TV... Could be a menacing place to play - the Monday night house of pain.

Play it against an interstate side like Freo, GWS or Gold Coast. Capture the TV market... the residents can suck it up for one or two nights every year, and those 22,000 who can make it/the die hards won't mind the struggle to find parking/PT links.

Imagine.

But the place is, and always will be a shithole!
Even if the AFL bulldoze all the stands and start from scratch?

Arden St would be great, location wise. Princes Park still suffers from the issues it did - hostile local residents preventing night games, a train line some blocks away and a tram service slowed by patrons doing a right hand turn in Royal Parade to park their car on surrounding parkland.

Pretty sure the ground was there prior to any of the local residents. Their objection is noted and overruled.

Make it 40k seating if possible. Can then be used properly.

What do you call ROYAL Park????

That is a 5 minute walk to the ground for
me. No further away than the other trains from surburban grounds

Arden Street has changed. Like Carlton North Melbourne built a training facility where the old Grandstand stood on the wing. All the other bits and pieces were demolished. The oval itself was small. North Melbourne enlarged it to have the same dimensions as Docklands. This means there's no room to expand as the outer wing and both ends of the ground are smaller. In its heyday it was probably the smallest venue for football and changes since then have made it smaller.

Has political discourse in this country actually reached a point where investment in infrastructure essential for the long term success of the city is considered 'pork barrelling'? Fixing our PT system benefits everyone and is frankly critical if Melbourne wants to remain a functional, livable city. That's the opposite of pork barrelling. In fact, it's literally what governments are supposed to be doing.

SAD. FAKE NEWS etc etc

After attending the first AFLW game at Carlton I was hopeful that it could result in Princes Park being resurrected as a venue. Women's football needs a home and I think Carlton would be a great choice. I think it has other possibilities for VFL games and AFL games also. I'm not sure about Carlton playing there again however there may be occasions where North and Bulldogs games make sense.

Priorities. They're starting in the wrong place where inner city transport dwarfs anything in the burbs.

Investment is needed where people actually live. Public transport in the south eastern suburbs is abysmal. A car journey of 50 minutes will take 2.5 hours by bus and train. e.g. There is still no train line to the old Waverley Park. Travelling north-south from Mentone to Doncaster will take in the slowest bus route imaginable at around 90 mins.

I have written to Jacinta Allan and her previous Liberal minister on various issues and dead silence.

North Melbourne station is only good for
parking. That's it, there is no way a ground like that will ever host AFL games, there is no seating, an ugly Admin building and bush everywhere.

North have already fallen into the AFL's hands by the talk of moving to Tassie. The AFL are fishing for another one of 'their' clubs. They already have GWS and GC as their clubs. We need to stay as our club and not let the AFL influence our decisions. PP is another where we need to fight against the AFL who have no intentions of bringing games back there. They are out enemies not our friends, they have never helped us and would be more inclined about the upgrade of Etihad.

If we stick ttogether as Carlton though against the AFL anything is possible.
