So that's:

In: "Bad back who can't jump or sprint", and "can only play half a game"
Out: "all heart, quicker than most; hard at the pill", "slower than a wet fortnight in a leaky tent"

It could be very good half though Ralph, in a position where we only have the ugly step-sister at the moment...
and he is playing a full game for Sowfs...maybe not tearing it up, but he's out there.

OUT: Warnock (not req'd for Saints)
Duffield (form)
Headland (1 good game in 8 weeks not good enough)
Walker (form)

IN: Collard
Drum
Ibbotson
Hasleby

In. Hase, Foster
Out. DJ, Walker

Hase is an automatic in if fit. And I'm throwing Foster in for the hell of it as our miracle rookie hope. I like what I've seen of him and he was named in the best again this week. Could be the sort of player to lift his game with better players around him.

I'm normally no Dessie basher but I was really disappointed in him today. We needed him to step up in Hase's absence and he was barely sighted when the heat was on in the first half. I'd send him back to the WAFL for a kick up the ass. It's not like the team's performance can get any worse anyway.

I normally am a Walker basher (in a considered kind of way) so I'm going to nominate him as my other out. He was ok last week but for me he's the sort of player that needs to justify his selection by playing well every week or he's one of the first names on the block. And pace isn't as important when playing the Saints.

I'm tempted to name Collard for M. Carr too but I'm willing to wait till CC is running out full games with Sowf.

Never thought I'd be doing this but, I think Des deserves 1 more week to improve.

IMO he's played 1 sensational game and 4 servicable ones (3 of which have been in the last month) and 3 crap games.

I have had a few reds though.

I may be mistaken, but wasn't Des in the forward line for a fairly long stint today? I think we discussed this after his efforts last week in the forward line and a few of us agreed that while he CAN look great down there, it's the worst possible place for him to be for any extended amount of time. Des needs to be somewhere that he can get his hands on the ball. A forward pocket is not that place.

If he can kick 2 - 3 goals and put some forward pressure on for even a quarter of a game it has to be better than what we have now....

I mean, aren't some players playing minimal game time anyway?

Time on the ground in todays game
Warnock 47 miutes
Duffield 67 minutes
Wewbster 72 minutes

I'd like to see Collard play this week but with pressure mounting on Connolly I expect him to stick with the more experienced players.

My hair follicles are falling out so I can only afford limited head scratching. I'd be interested in your rationale to see if its other than knee kerk.

It's not kneejerk. I watch McManus extremely closely every week.

First of all, I think his skills are good, on either foot. When we play a position type game, he is good. He runs to the right spots, is a good mark and has reasonable skills. His lack of pace doesn't stand out.

But in other games where the ball is there to be won, ie a contested game, McManus struggles a lot. You might see a good tackle here and there but that is because he is ALWAYS second to the ball and ALWAYS reactive. Being as slow in lateral movement and acceleration as he is kills us at stoppages.

McManus was good against Melbourne (one of our best) but that was a free flowing possesion game. When teams put pressure on and it is a contested football type game (see our last 4 games), he struggles big time. It is no coincidence he struggled in all of the 3 finals we played last season.

I think he is still an OK player but not for our team. Why? Because we need ball winners and McManus is one of our midfielders and he cannot win the ball.

We have players like Crowley and such who are good players but cannot consistantly win the ball... but he has other strengths, he can play a defensive role, is reliable goalkicker, and he is quick accross the ground and agile.

So what it comes to is McManus is a midfielder but cannot win the ball, isn't defensive and is slow.... what use is he? I mean a midfielder's job is to get the football. Even though some of our other midfielders cannot win the ball either, they have other strengths, McManus does not. For a team crying out for ball winners, McManus is easily the most expendible imo. Isn't it better trying someone else in there?

sorry des needs booting macca was better duffman was better heck even walker chased down players des should be dropped gilmoer would have been better 2day and i dont rate him

On second thoughts I'd go this against the Saints;

IN: Collard Haddrill, Hase, Drum
OUT: Walker, Mundy, Headland, M Carr.

This would be a harder side IMO, but probably sacrificed a bit of pace and skill in the process?

I don'y see how you are sacrificing skill or pace - Hasleby, Drum and Collard are probably 3 of our more skilled players whilst Collard and Drum are two of the quickest in the club over the first 5 metres....

What you are sacrificing is quite a bit of experience AND you are generally putting in more injury prone and underdone players (Drum is probably the only one without any question marks over him).

Are Drum and Haddrill playing well enough to warrant selection? (from what I've seen on tv I'd say no) And where does Robbie fit in anyway? One of the key backs will need to be moved to let him in as he can't play anywhere else.

On M Carr - I've never been a fan and never will be, but he is our best option for shutting a player down. The Saints have a few decent midfielders and I think his ability to stop will keep him in the team.

I think most people would be surprised to see just how much we miss Headland if he wasn't out there. We don't have many players with the ability to hit a target in the forward line and I don't think now is the best time to be dropping someone that can. He had a bad game yesterday, along with a lot of his teammates, but he did spend a long time up forward and that's not the place to be when we play the way we did.

Fair enough, just putting it out there. Thanks for the feedback.

If Haddrill played a key back role it would release Dodd to fill the M Carr role. He'd do a better job IMO.

I think you're being far to easy on DJ by excusing his performance because he was in the Forward line. Our other forwards were ok (far better than him anyway) The reason he had a shocker was because he actually had some defensive pressure on him ie an opponent that played tight as opposed to the Melb game where he ran loose. CC admitted this in his post game interview after the Melb game.
And his disposals aren't anywhere near as good as his fans make out. The few that he got yesterday were crap.
Thanks for the feedback though.

You've certainly changed your tune from when this thread started!

Let's be honest though, there is no chance Headland will be dropped, even with we think he should be. But he had been playing well up until yesterday as I said.

Just another point on McManus.... I didn't mean to sound like I was targetting him or anything... it's just what I think needs to happen for us to move on.

By the way, if he plays this week... I think he will have a good game because of the Saints' style of game. They don't have a strong midfield.

But do you guys think the coaching staff would have a tough time dropping McManus, just because of who he is? No doubt he gives it 110% every week and if he is dropped and we lose, there will be a huge media backlash on the coaching staff. Though I suppose they dropped Parker, however everyone was aware of how bad he played in the game before he was dropped.

You've named my 4 least favourite players to go out, but I think 4 is too many changes. If there were 4 players banging the door down to be selected I'd agree with you, but Haddrill and Drum haven't been in good enough form to come in.
