I know its a bit off but what the heck...

Outs / Ins

Bradley Johnson
Head McPharlin
Foster Ballantyne
Dodd Headland

I reckon the young guys did enough to hold their spot.

I dont think Headland will be ready and I doubt they rush him this time.
Ballantyne for Walters (did nothing wrong but not quite yet)
McPharlin for Head
MJohnson for Campbell (Pearce/Foster if he recovers but that did look bad)
Grover (if fit) for Pearce/Foster.

Not that Pearce did anything major wrong but I do think his kicking needs a bit of work and he did seem a little loose as a defender might be better on a wing.

I would keep Kepler in(or pick Clarke) as I get worried when MJ is in the ruck scared he will snap and he is worth more to us around the ground. Plus Kepler was sound against a decent ruck duo. Also think that a bit more of Sandi forward would be good also.

I do wonder about the future of Thornton and where he fits in to this team as we go forward but he did enough to hold his spot.

I was happy with Foster and his effort, I did notice that he would take the easy option when the ball got turned over, I hope it was just that he was gassed as he hasn't played a lot of footy the last couple of years plus an interupted pre season.

Watching the Port game I couldnt help but think if only we could get Campbell's attitude and aggression at the ball and graft it with Murphy's ability and we would then have a decent big forward.

Peake was poor IMO (to many mistakes, maybe it was just those 2 marks that went straight through him)vs Port but I feel his pace will be invaluable vs Geelong.

Team: Broughton Grover/Mcpharlin Dodd
Suban Tarrant Duffield
Hill Hasleby Ibbotson
Thornton Pavlich Solomon
Ballantyne Campbell/McPharlin Johnson
Sandilands Schammer Mundy
deBoer Bradley Peake Foster

I know we are 3-8 but the signs are incouraging. Really like the toughness of Suban, deBoer and Broughton and even Hill showed guts battling through soreness. Plus the desire and effort from Pav, Has, Sandi, Peake, Solly, Grover, Schammer, McPharlin, even Headland when fit and the development of Ibbo, Duff.

Dodd isn't going anywhere. And what exactly do you think that Foster did wrong?

Not sure about injuries to Headland, Grover, McPharlin, Johnson or Campbell.

But one definite change...

I'd go;
Mcpharlin for Dodd.
Grover for Head.
Jonno for Campbell
Balla for Pearce.

I agree with the wombat though, Dodd will stay in. I personally think we need to move forward and pick players that can go 2 hours without a brain fade. Dodd is very "Fremantle of old".

I think you might be optimistic listing Johnson, Elvis and Headland as ins - my understanding is that Dessie is at least four weeks away, while MJ and Elvis will each miss at least one more week. Groves and Balla should both be fit though... So Groves in for Head, and Balla in for Campbell.

Dodd won't be dropped - we don't have anyone else fit at the moment who can play his sized role defensively, especially against the experienced gun forwards that the Handbaggers have. And if Dodd is dropped, only Grover would be able to replace him, and personally I'd rather have both Dodd and Groves against Geelong (just for the one game). Doddy and Groves can go toe to toe with Mooney and his fellow drongoes...

Don't understand why you'd drop Foster - I thought he was very good. Would like to see Clarke in myself, but suspect they will persevere with Kep for a while yet - I thought he was good in patches last night.

I agree that Peake was poor, but I thought that part of that was from the decision to play him as the key forward during the third - really seemed to sap his confidence. I'd be dropping Head or Peake before Foster, Pearce or any of the other young blokes. And I agree that Clarke would be a good in, especially if he plays primarily as a forward tall - once Kiwi went down we were way too small last night, even on a wet night.

Dodd isn't going anywhere. And what exactly do you think that Foster did wrong?

I agree - they'll probably keep both Dodd and Head for the handbaggers game. And I must have been watching a different game to some people - I thought Fozzie Bear was very very good, as was Walters and Pearce.

Gee Dodd really hurts you guys coming out of defence.

He undoes so much of his good defensive work with really poor disposal.

Thought Son son was good, Pearce also showed some grunt.

Ballantyne for Walters (did nothing wrong but not quite yet)
Yeah, nah. You're watching a different game to just about everyone. He's there already.

Top of the mornin' to you Pav.

Remember we have next week off, so we don't play again for two weeks. So both Grover and McPharlin should be fit, while it should be plenty of time for Campbell to recover from his hit.

In: Grover, McPharlin, Ballantyne

Out: Head, Foster, ???

All three of those players need to come in. Our defence was a mess last night, with Duffield and Pearce playing on Westhoff at stages. We really missed Grover and McPharlin (who needs to play in defence). While Ballantyne is the obvious one.

Head is the obvious one to miss out, while Foster is the other one. I'd prefer Foster to stay, but there simply aren't any other players who deserve to be dropped. Foster struggled to pick up the pace of the game last night and his skills weren't all that clean.

The last out is a fair bit harder. I want both Walters and Pearce to play against Geelong, I thought they were our best 2 kids last night. So I think the last out is between Dodd and Broughton, and I'd imagine Broughton will be the one to miss. Not that he deserves to be dropped of course.

Anyone suggesting Walters and Pearce should go are nuts (although I acknowledge it is not an unlikely scenario). The kids did nothing wrong and were in the better half of players we had out there.

Get rid of Head and Dodd first. Then see who's available...

To have any chance of winning or at least being competitive, we need to get our defensive matchups right, especially Johnson. Would Tarrant go onto him or is he more suited to Mooney?

thats an interesting point, personally i think that our best defender should go on their best forward. i dont really rate mooney that highly, i think he is just an ordinary forward in a sensational team. if pavlich was playing for geelong, he would kick 150 goals a year

therefore
tarrant- steve johnson- best defender on their best forward
mcpharlin- mooney
broughton- stokes/varcoe

thats how id play it

Stevie J is a bloody hard player to match up. If we had Hayden fit he'd prob be the man for the job.

Taz better suited than McPharlin as he actually gives second efforts and has mastered the art of spoiling.

Taz - Stevie J
McPharlin - Mooney
Grover - Hawkins (Will grover be fit?)

Dodd will play on S Johnson.

hayden would be too small for johnson imo, but we dont have to worry about that anyhow

if dodd plays on johnson, johnson could give the record 18 goals in a game a shake. johnson will pull dodd's pants down and embarrass him.

tarrant is quick, disciplined, will match johnson in the air.... give him the nod.

having said all that, tarrant could play the game of his life, but if ablett and bartel are giving him the ball on a platter it wont matter, stop the midfield, stop johnson

Totally agree with this.:thumbsu:

People don't really understand Hayden. He has always been to slow for SJ.

Dodd has a good history on him. One of the easier match ups I would have thought.

Agree with both, but can only wish Dodd went some where....

Agree IP, enough of Head enough already of Dodd....

Which means S Johnson will handpass to him all day so Dodd can deliver to a Geelong player.

HA HA great call!:thumbsu:

FWIW, play Kiwi play Foster drop head on his head and Jill will come tumbling after......

Why drop Foster, Walters or Pearce?
Didn't watch the game yet [worked last night] but listened to the 6PR broadcast. Even Hardie gave Walters and Pearce huge wrap [and he's hard to please]. Keep them all in I reckon and don't bring half-fit players back into the team. In fact, I'd give McPharlin a run at East Freo first [when he recovers] because he's been mediocre so far this year.

Balla for Head. That's it.

Just get rid of Head and don't drop Walters.
Clarke for Bradley. Ballantyne in.
There is much more I want but I have decided to keep my prayers simple.
