Feel free to dig up my old posts from after that game. I was quite supportive of the kid. I said that it was a learning experience for him and that expecting him to beat Judd was unrealistic, given that Judd has destroyed many players far better and more experienced than Kerridge. I specifically argued against dropping him on the back of that performance.I wonder what your preference would have been after Kerridge's 3 disposal midfield performance against Carlton.
Lyons is an interesting case. From what they've said, they obviously don't think he's particularly quick. Adelaide aren't a team renowned for speed (other than Dangerfield), so he's too slow to be selected in a team which is already fairly slow. Just how slow is he? The kid obviously knows how to get the pill - his SANFL performances are proof of that. Is he good enough to make it despite a lack of pace, as Mitchell & Diesel have famously done, or will he end up being one of those players regarded as being a very good state league player without the attributes to succeed in the AFL?Kerridge and Laird were brought in against a weakened, already shit Bulldogs side. Kerridge didn't really do anything until his 3rd game against Hawthorn. Laird struggled with his disposal against the Dogs but looked much better against Carlton.
Lyons had the superior SANFL form but doesn't come in until we played tough opposition in Hawthorn. He gets 53% time on ground and within that only limited time in the midfield. And then the next week he's tossed back out into obscurity. I mean, what?
I don't consider myself as having the 'toss everyone over the age off 22 out and play the kids' mindset. Lyons is just a really interesting case. The coaches seem to think he is Brad Symes - 'oh well he's had 10 SANFL BOGs in a row, I guess it's time to give him one token AFL game just so the media doesn't call us out on not rewarding form'. Whereas what you'd expect for a player of his age is 'well he's clearly too good for the SANFL, let's back him in for a run of games and see what he can do'.
I would be suprised if he doesn't make it as an AFL footballer, but at this rate I'd be even more surprised if he makes it here.
These are not intended to be rhetorical questions. Only time will provide the answers.
