Not the first time we’ve done it.
Happened to Hartlett 6 years ago and we got a 20k fine.
Not quite.

We got a 20k fine cause we tested him and he was fine, but there's a 20 minutes mandatory rest period even if you test and it's negative.

We brought him back on the field soon as he passed the test.

Butters looked fine.

Jonas did seem a bit dazed and maybe should have been more thoroughly assessed.

But whatevs.

We'll get roasted for this this week, despite Joel Selwood finishing many games looking like he'd sparred with prime Tyson, and nobody has ever contemplated if he needed a test at any time.

Yep but it was 15 minutes he had to wait. Port stuffed up the 2016 process, not the test.

Port Adelaide has been fined $20,000 by the AFL for breaching concussion rules. The AFL said the Power failed to follow regulations when it allowed mid-fielder Hamish Hartlett back onto the field after receiving a head knock during last week's match against Hawthorn.

It said Hartlett should have been kept off the ground for 15 minutes to allow the club doctor to watch a re-play of the incident, but he stayed off for just five minutes. Hartlett passed the SCAT3 test and was deemed fit to play but Port failed to notify the AFL's interchange official that a head injury assessment was being undertaken. That notification would have kept him off the field for 15 minutes.

"Despite this issue of timing, Hamish was cleared of concussion at the time and has shown no sign of concussion during subsequent testing throughout this week," Port Adelaide general manager of football Chris Davies said.
Half of the fine has been suspended until the end of the 2018 season.

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said he took a number of factors into account when issuing the fine, including the fact Power's chief medical officer was attending to another player at the time, Brad Ebert, who suffered rib injuries earlier in the game. Port has also offered to review its processes relating to head injuries.

I hope it gets looked at, and if we did something blatantly wrong I hope we get slapped, because the players need to be looked after and saved from themselves.

I'm not saying we made the wrong decision putting them back on, but it looks really bad (particularly with the way Jonas looked coming off), and it would be good if we were either punished or cleared.

That's the correct take. There are alot of *sticks that have already made up their mind. At the end of the day, it's the doctor's call. If they want to take it out of the doctor's hands and have a AFL doctor, that is their right. If however, the doc has sent out an injured player, he should be escorted out the building.

The protocol is simple. You can't assess someone for concussion on the bench, they go down to the rooms and do a test.

Normally the docs watch replays of the hit to determine if it was a head knock.

Maybe they weren't concussed. That isn't even the point. The point is how can the doctor assess that without actually testing them? They got wrapped in bandages to stop the blood and bundled back out immediately.

Jonas in particular looked faarked.

In the Geelong game last week Stewart had a head knock … PASSED the concussion test, but was taken out of the game as the doctor didn’t like the way it looked on replay…..

Would there have been a concussion test if it was in the first 10 minutes of the game or the margin was 10 goals either way …?? 100% yes.

I think that’s were I’m at too. We know concussion isn’t always instant and symptoms can show later on, I thought that’s were the whole industry was at with heavy head knocks.

It’s hard to see how rushing players back out can be best practice.

If it was Joel Selwood?

100% no.

Please let's not use anything Geelong does as an example of responsible concussion management.

Does Selwood have any braincells left?

If the AFL don't care enough to take it out of the clubs' hands then any supposed 'bad look' is on them as far as I'm concerned. They lazily half-arsed this just like the medical sub rule.

Don't think we need any more excuses to bag our club thanks.
I liked that our coach publicly backed our doc. Commentators/journos were ready to grab a headline for tomorrow and our coach bit back and reminded everyone that the decision was made by an experienced medical professional and they could duck right off. Loved it. When Abbey Chomes said “we’ve got a developing story here” you could tell we were being set up for tomorrows discussion point - I’m glad someone was strong enough to bite back and tell everyone to get back in their seats.

Interesting that no one on BF or in the media has asked the question about whether the player who tackled Butter's should be nervous. For people so concerned about concussion, they are selective about it.
Still begs the question though, if the initial collision happened in the first quarter would the players have been back on the park so soon?

Just felt uncomfortable seeing Zak have to come off again with blood streaming from that cheek wound. I wonder what his parents thought.

It is pretty over the top. The AFL have been allowing guys like Lynch and Hawkins to punch people in the head for years now. It was a 'solid' hit, but you can see from the clock. They are standing no longer than 12 seconds after it occurred. Butters looks very lucid and more interested in the fact half his missing was missing. Jonas looked worse, but even he was banging and sponging his own wound 1-2 minutes later. If the doc says they were fine, the fact that it 'looks bad' doesn't really come into.

I'm sure it was mentioned there is a afl doc at the ground that can call the players back in if they are not happy with the process the players have gone though?

How do you know the doctor didn't test them?? Where are all the protocols, where all the tests are listed if you are such an expert?

You are saying every single test is compulsory. What rules say that? You obviously have a copy of them and have read thoroughly given how much of an expert you are, so copy and paste them into this thread.
Extract below from the AFL’s community concussion protocols. Jonas didn’t vomit I guess? Maybe they did a memory test in the 3 minutes he was on the bench?

As others have said, I’ve seen other clubs keep players off the ground for less. It’s an uncomfortable look.

“Recognising a suspected concussion
(a) Any one or more of the following visual clues can indicate a possible concussion:
(i) Loss of consciousness or responsiveness
(ii) Lying motionless on ground/slow to get up
(iii) Vomiting
(iv) Seizure or convulsion
(v) Unsteady on feet / balance problems or falling over/incoordination
(vi) Grabbing/clutching of head
(vii) Dazed, blank or vacant look
(viii) Confused/not aware of plays or events
(ix) Impaired memory (unable to recall events leading up to or following the injury)
(x) Facial injury
(xi) Player does not seem like their normal self”

To be fair, going by that list, ken Hinkley is also concussed.

Don't the media know the rules at Alberton, "never ever judge us on what we do."

Hinkley insisted club doctor Mark Fisher had followed the right process and that both players were fine to continue to play.

"Are you questioning a doctor of 25 years' experience that he made a wrong decision?" Hinkley responded when asked about the process followed on the bench.

Yes kern, we are. Youse have 10 years as coach and you're still shithouse at it, so that proves experience isn't everything.
